I've never tried Cholula, does it have any bite? I find store bought Mexican hot sauces too mild for my taste; some of the Dave's Insane sauces are spicy but don't have the 'smokey' taste I like, too Vinigar-y...

Give El Yucateco a try.
My favorites(other than Tuong ot sriracha) are Grace http://www.hotsauceworld.com/grachotpepsa.html and Matouk's Flambeau http://carolinasauce.stores.yahoo.net/170001-1062204842.html The grace sauce is kind of like Tabsco but made with habaneros or scotch bonnets and can be purchased in some groceries. And the Matouk's is a mash type of sauce which is the hottest stuff I've had that didn't contain OCE I can only get it at a couple of local ethnic groceries, one is run by Malaysians and one by Trinidadians. FTR, I can't stand the flavor that OCE gives to food! |

Nothing sucks worse than it being 4am and getting the craving for mexican food. AHHH!! ...im going to bed, maybe I'll forget about it. oh yea, get both. And some Daves Insanity and Cock sauce. |

+1 on El yucateco. It is pure concentrate, and has not been cut with vinegar. youll need an ice pack for your butt.

For those of us who are seeking the rush of endorphins from the added capsaicin, Cholula falls well short. It isn't what I would consider hot at all. Cholula is a great sauce for flavor addition. It is a typical Mexican hot sauce in that it does not seek to add as much heat as it does flavor.
El Yucateco has already been mentioned and they have a variety of very good sauces. I think their XXXta Hot it is probably the hottest of the "mexican" sauces I have come across. ETA: This is a great hot sauce resource. |
