I must confess that my dillo dust habit has exceeded my income. I
cannot in good faith continue paying $150+ for each bottle of dillo dust, even though it does come with some mighty nice optic mounts and such! So I have set out to clone Dillo Dust. Has anyone else tried this? Any recipes out there? My homemade stuff so far is a bit on the hot side (evidently the ratio of cayenne to other spices is a bit high), but it's actually quite good (and I like spicy anyway). I would like to get something closer to the real deal, though... |

Quoted: um,okay....what IS Dillo dust? ground armadillo? Just a rub that comes with many a LaRue order. I'd imagine it's just an amalgamation of salt and spices of a southwestern variety. |

that's not even in the ballpark... have you tasted Dillo Dust? |

I dunno man...The China knock-off "rillow rust" doesn't hold it's flavor and is made from lesser spices. The china stuff might be ok for cheap pork chops, but for any real chef using Grade A cuts of beef, you need to pay the extra money.
|
|
I heard somewhere that Cheaper Than Dirt was going to start throwing in some sort of "Dillo Dust" in with their orders.
Just kidding, I can't back that up. |

I'll be good for a little while. Got 4 bottles in reserve. Eventually, I know I'll have LT-104's stashed in the closet, waist deep. It's just part of life.

Cheaper Than Dirt would have to call it "We Overcharge You So Fucking Much For Every Piece Of Shit We Sell We Figured We Should Give You Some Meat Seasoning To Lessen The Pain Of Being Fucked Dust" |

Mix in a part sugar and you have your clone. |

Well I doubt that in the machine shop is a spice grinder. So, it is likely that he orders it from a place that simply labels it for his business and others. Find which company he gets it from and there you go.

I like their mounts and all, but i think the dust isn't very good.

In college a friend of mine always carried a bottle of that in his book bag for the fries at the dining hall |

It's more than a meat rub.. drop some in a pot of Green Beans.. MmmmmMmmmm..

It's the missing food group. FDA recommends 4 servings per day.

While I love the idea of getting something extra from LaRue (ballcap, tactical beverage opener, Dillo Dust) I laugh at those (mostly yankees) that believe Dillo Dust is some magical secret powder.
Did yer mamas never season yer food? As posted above, Lawyry's + sugar = Dillo Dust. |

Man, some of you kids must bathe in it or something. I've got atleast 1/2 dozen bottles in my cabinet and I've even given a few away. I'm just about to finish up my first bottle.

I use it pretty often and I'm still on my first bottle. I have 3 more sitting in the cabinet and another package coming from LaRue this week. |

There was someone on here he decided to try and clone dillo dust.
According to him or her, he or she got pretty close. No, I'm not going to search for you! |
|
Hmmm... no recipes, huh?
I'll show you mine if you show me yours!!! |

I have a bottle of Dillo Dust, I like it, but I don't orgasm over it like some do here.

I know i am going to be hanged for this, but i was not a huge fan of dillo dust. I make my own rubs that i like alot more.

Well, I guess my thread failed.
Here's my parting shot, the recipe I'm using. It's quite a bit hotter than actual dillo dust, that could be toned down by reducing the amount of Cayenne. I really like it, though. 2 Tablespoons Sugar 3-3/4 Teaspoons Salt 3-1/4 Teaspoons Paprika 1-3/8 Teaspoons Cayenne Pepper 3/4 Teaspoon Celery Seed 3/4 Teaspoon Garlic 3/4 Teaspoon Cumin |
