At the end of the war there were billions of rounds of unneeded ammo left over, and literally shiploads of it was dumped in the ocean in all theaters. It wasn't needed any more and wasn't worth the cost and bother to bring it back. Same thing with small arms, Jeeps, you name it. What turned up in military foreign aid and surplus stores after the war was only a small fraction of what was disposed of.
