Awesome site guys!!!!! I posted my resume on the website and in less than 24 hours I got two emails. One was for a security position in kuwait. (Not really my gig, but sounds cool) and the other simply said, "please call me" I looked at the sig block to get the company name to pull more information. I will call later on seeing that it is 7:30 in the morning here.

I am getting out in November and trying to get a jump start on finding a job. I have not written my resume yet because I dont know how. Never had to do one before.  But I have a couple of people helping me out.  

Anyone one know of anything near the Jacksonville FL area or Decatur AL area? I am not a combat vet. I have been stationed on a ship for 6 years and worked on CIWS (Close-In Weapons System)

Utilize the transition assistance program (ACAP center in the Army not sure about the Navy) or VA resume writing services if available. They do a pretty good job and convert your military experience/training into language civilian employers will understand.
 

Thanks for the info FMJshooter. The Navy has TAPS class which I will be attending in September. Just trying to get a head start. Dont want to get out and be SOL. Hopefully I will get more information from TAPS than I have now.

I have tried all of this...Dynocorp, KBR, Triple Canopy and more. Always get a no go email, if I even get a response. I'm a layed off airline pilot on the civilian side and on the military side I'm light infantry, scout platoon E6 with sniper school honor grad, a couple state 1st place shooting comps as well as top 10 nationals, 286 PT so I'm not some out of shape guy. It seems like nothing really helps. In Dec when I return from this deployment I will have 27 months on combat deployments. There's got to be a way to find a decent job. I have a place in Florida but the wife is in Utah with her mom while I'm away. Any ideas? I think I've run out.

Try SOC I hear they are taking anyone with a pulse. Talked to a Tripple Canopy guy and an SOC guy in Atlanta coming back from R&R. Both said SOC was hiring like mad but pay was 80k working afghanistan. Not what it used to be.

K B R is downsizing (laying off) to match the troop withdrawl. I hear rumors that the same is happening in AFG.
SOC is getting huge. Seems the Army is replacing troops here in Iraq with SOC Ugandans.

I'm putting of my next R&R till January. Hoping I still have job then.

Otherwise might head to the gulf of mexico, see if I can find an oil spill job.

Yeah I see the Ugandan SOC guys at every base. It seems we (military) are always having to wait for MWR facilities because those idiots are always using everything.  If I would be sitting at a gate or door, no way. If they have something better than that I would. I guess I'll take a look.

I have been working for a company called Hi-LIne, selling industrial hardware while on terminal leave.  I just got a call from AFJROTC and I just got accepted to a local high school as an instructor. I was very stressed out about finding a job, now I have to decide if I should keep my Hi-LIne job which is commission based and making very little with a lot of effort with the potential to make about $100K in about a year if I bust my butt; OR take the AFJROTC job and make a set amount, forever pretty much. If I take the AFJROTC job I will need to sell my work truck and that could present a small problem, maybe would need to make a few payments if it doesn’t sell right away. Anyone ever been a AFJROTC instructor? BTW...I got the Hi-Line job fro Bradley Morris.

does anyone have any leads on jobs in CT?  i've been to the usual places on line but nothing yet.  i am in school right now so i would prefer a part time thing but if there is a good enough gig i'd leave school full time for it.
5yrs fixing jets for USMC  2yrs or so reserve 2111 Armorer and about 8 moths working a bomb dog in Afghan.

I am a Air Force veteran. I retired in 2008 after 26yrs on active duty and now I work for at a local Work Force Center in Columbia, SC. I got this job by going back to school on a V.A. program, which allowed me to work in a local Work Force Center (Unemployment office) as a V.A. work/study. If you are eligible for any form of the G.I. bill or V.A. VocRehab  and going to school at least 3/4 time, then you are eligible for this program. It is was a very useful tool for me in finding permanent employment after retiring. Now I am a Career Development Facilitator (CDF) working in a state job. Granted, it doesn't pay that great, but it is a decent job with decent benefits.

I encourage all vets to look into the work/study program and to take advantage of the numerous vet education programs out there. Be prepared for roadblocks, stalling, and uncooperative types along the way. Stick to your guns and let them know you mean business and that you are serious about taking advantage of the benefits you earned, not given, but earned. A good place to start is at you local employment office, they should have a Local Veteran Employment Represenative (LVER) that can assist you. Also, the V.A. website is another good starting point, www.va.gov. This is how I did it, and I was able to turn this benefit into real employment.

I also encourage veterans to join linkedin, this is a great website for job seekers. Think of it as Facebook for professionals.

Make sure that your resume is the very best it can be. Never pay anyone to write your resume, too many souces out there that will assist you for free. Make sure you have removed the military jargon from your resume, unless you are going for a job as a civilian on a military installation where they know what that jargon means. Be sure to use keywords from the job annoucement in your resume, lots of employers use a scanner to search for those keywords and if they are not there, then a real person will never see your resume. Steer away from the old school chronological resume, there are new styles that are much more effective. Remember, if you are not getting offered interviews, then your resume probably is letting you down.

Brush up on your interviewing skills, this is very important. Most local work force centers offer free workshops; resume, interviewing, softskills, how to dress for success, etc. It all matters when looking for a job and you cannot be overprepared, but you can be woefully underprepared.


Bottom line is this, use the free services available to you, your earned benefits, and the same rugged determination that got you through basic training and apply them to finding suitable employment. Remember, wihen you have no job, finding one, is your job.

i will be retiring in a about a year from the Air Force. i am in the Eastern NC area. I'm a T2W171.. the "T" prefix is an trainer identifier since i was a career field instructor from 2009-2013. i have also worked the Flightline, backshop, Quality assurance and have 18 years experience on the F-15 C/D/E Aircraft. i also have my CCAF in my AFSC and also a degree in Instructor Technology.

i am trying to be proactive looking for jobs in advance since i have always been a planner.. I'm pretty open to what jobs are out there and would love to have a job in the defense or Aircraft field but lets be honest, any good paying job nowadays is worth a lot to a veteran...

I am eight months out from retiring from the Army but four months away from starting my PTDY/Terminal Leave. So lately, I've been in a job-applying frenzy, trying to whore myself out anywhere around the world. To borrow a title from an old TV show.....Have Gun, Will Travel. But to say the job market is competitive is a bit misleading. For every job available, it seems there are dozens of applicants. I have found that many of the aggregate jobs websites designed for veterans (i.e. http://www.hireveterans.com/; http://www.fedshirevets.gov/; https://www.hireheroesusa.org/) are actually not very helpful at all. Maybe I am a bit jaded in my perspective. Maybe someone out there found these websites of use. If so, I'm happy for you. But in my experience, they are absolutely worthless. I mean, it is great that Wal-Mart and Starbucks want to hire 500,000 vets. Great. But in my case, like many veterans out there, we have come from positions of responsibility where we have been in charge of formations of soldiers and responsible for thousands to millions of dollars worth of taxpayer-funded, government owned equipment. To say we had a lot on our plate is an understatement. We can handle a heavy load, and are worth the salaries it commands. Save the barista jobs for the high school kids.

In my job-search experiences thus far, I have utilized the following to varying degrees of success: LinkedIn, USA Jobs, the jobs board on http://army.togetherweserved.com/army/; http://recruitmilitary.com/; https://www.clearancejobs.com/; and countless VFR direct job applications to the companies themselves. I work for another company doing something totally different but was offered a position with them last week. They are on base here and I think the pay is $85K-$95K a year.

That being said, I am ending my contract in August, and returning back home to Alaska. I will be looking through some of the websites posted to see what I can find back home.

My own experience:  Seriously... Straight from heart... On my Mother's soul...

I was a Yeoman in the Coast Guard (i.e. in civilian terms - I was a male version of an H/R rep in an office.  Admin, personnel records, ID cards, dependent benefits, etc...)  Thank God I was able to venture over more towards the I.T. world and the old Unisys terminals (i.e. the old Burroughs systems that ran BTOS/CTOS for an operating system).  Thankfully, with the help from other superiors, they explained that the old Burroughs systems were primarily written in C and on parallel with Unix mainframes, back in the day.

NOTHING that I ever did (computer related) could be "translated" into the civilian market, due to the incompatibility (military vs civilian).  Thankfully, I learned a lot from superiors and got more and more into Unix systems and databases like Progress and Oracle.

I spent a number of years after retirement in the I.T. industry as a retired veteran.  I was stable and didn't need to Job Hunt (getting to the point of this thread).  But then, disaster happened a decade later, when for some reason or another, I grew older, operating systems were older, databases were older, and the "powers that be" decided to get rid of all the "I.T. Dinosaurs".  They quickly transitioned into Windows, Apps, and downloaded all the recompiled databases from Unix.   .....and that was that.

I took about 6 months off to try and figure out WTF I was supposed to do...  I was too old (by then) and the I.T. industry no longer wanted me, as they could easily hire some punk kid right out of a University for pennies on the dollar.  Oh well... Life can suck sometimes...

But I decided to do a 180° change of direction and re-invent myself.  I went through the CDL training school, and got my CDL-B and have been driving a school bus for a living as a retired veteran.  I didn't think I could do it, but I did it!  11 years so far, as a gray haired grandpa, and I'm still taking kids to and from school from Kindergarten to 11th or 12 grade high school!  I have seen it all, and nothing fazes me anymore.
