Believe it or not, but you dont want a lot of contact with the trigger hand grip when precision shooting. Good consistent shoulder contact, but not a lot of grip contact. Consistency yes, but not a lot of contact.
Pistols are another matter.

You are right. Absolutely. If shooting at bench, you actually want the rifle to slide rearward in the bags. Many actually put a sheet of wax paper between each bag and the rifle to facilitate that. Pressure is only on the trigger, if you can.
Obviously, in the field conditions change and you do need to use the grip. But even then for precision shooting, you want as little as possible contact with anything except your shoulder and your trigger finger to obtain consistent placement and straight rearward movement of the trigger. The grip should only be a means by which you control accurate placement of the trigger finger. I'm not expert, but I know that much. The less pressure and contact I have with the grip while maintaining trigger discipline, the tighter my groups have become.
At my very amateurish level, I find that a grip with a single A2 type finger shelf gives me a constant reference point for consistent vertical hand placement on the grip. Once in position, the alignment of my trigger finger to the trigger is consistent. I need all the "crutches" I can get.
