There are a few pics of these on 10-8 and Lightfighter. Are these in production or prototypes?

Pic taken from 10-8:

TD told me that they had no (current) plans to produce it, and that they were currently only available for USSOCOM sales. To me, that's an insane decision, since I *know* they'd sell like nuts.

OTOH, I was also told that the plug is glued on, which significantly reduces my interest.

Do the mod yourself! Takes about 10 minutes with a coping saw, some waterproof glue, and some fine grit sandpaper.

I also heard the plug is just glued on, although the 2 folks who emailed me from TD said to check again in early January for availability.

Maybe a dumb question, but what advantage would the short VFG offer over the longer one?

If you hold the front grip with the thumb on the handguard instead of wrapping your hand around the grip, the grip doesn't need to be that long.   A grip that short also kills the ability to slide the pressure tape switch inside the cutout, but it's not all that secure even in the full size grip anyway, I always use some tape to make sure the tape switch doesn't fall out, so it's no big loss.

The grips in your pic look like cut-down prototypes, from the rough edge in the bottom where the cap is glued on. Should not be that difficult of a mod if someone wants to make one. I suppose TD will make another mold if it is to be produced.

i did my own 'garage chop job' about a month ago, but to an intermediate length, not the K. this was for my M1A with cluster rail to give it a more balanced look as the regular one looked too long. the bottom rail on the cluster rail is pretty low. when i use a VFG, i shoot the way duffy described - with the thumb forward, not wrapped around the grip, so i don't need the full length. the K does look a bit short, even for my small hands, though. for me, an intermediate length is perfect. i also did one for a para FAL.

Maybe that's why TD isn't selling it to the public yet, as each one is hand made from the standard grip?
