If another special run were made of these, how many would be in for a group buy?

In for sure if it was for the rail.

Probably on the upper, more so if it had the .070" MilSpec gas port under the FSP.

For the rail?

Fuck yes, I'd buy two.

Is this even a possibility? Dan_D, not trying to rain on your parade but do you have something in play or is this just a 15'er version of Rainbows and Skittles?

There won't ever be a group buy of these, esp since Daniel Defense needed to buy one from the open market because they didn't even have one for themselves.

My thoughts, exactly.  Following the MK18 thread, these went the way of hen's teeth, and unicorns.  Can't imagine how this would be possible.

All my skepticism aside; I would likely be in for one, just because

I'd buy one out of loyalty if this happened.

However, I will have to agree with TurbineGuy.

When these were first "revealed" to the civilian market, a whole bunch of people begged for them to be released to the civilian market, promising to buy one.  Regrettably, I must admit that I was one of those people.  But circumstances changed, my income flow changed, and frankly, I just never "got around to it."

Daniel Defense released them, and they took forever to sell.  They sat on shelves for quite a while, and wouldn't move.

Frankly and honestly, it's only their rarity that makes them sought after now, and if DD made more, then they wouldn't be as rare any more.

There's not a whole lot of documentation of their use with any military unit, so the market for "clones" isn't really that strong.

These are the things I'd be thinking about if I was DD...

DD has already said that they won't make more MK18 FSPs or GL/SSCs without a military/government order, even for a "group buy."

Again, I'd buy one of each at this point, if only to make the point that no good deed goes unrewarded... but I don't see it happening.  Again, though, not to be the naysayer... I'd find a way to buy one if it happened.

What they could do, however, is require a partial/in full upfront payment pre production to guarantee they will turn a profit.  I can't imagine too many would be opposed to that.  Almost makes the product seem more exclusive, increasing perceived value.

While nice in theory, this is how many "group buys" run into problems.

Someone has to be "in trust" of other people's money, projected lead times, production and delivery delays, etc. all play into it.  Look up the Shrike if you want to see how that works out.  Extreme example, a rail shouldn't be that hard to make... sure, but it can still be a big hassle, and few companies who are already earning money from regular business and don't need customer "investments" in order to continue R&D are willing to play that game.

Looking at it from the other end of the telescope, imagine, not that I'm implying anything about you personally--but say you put down $400 for a rail delivery within the next twelve months.  Nine months from now, you're late on your car payment, and decide you don't need that rail so bad, and you try to back out of your "group buy," since the product hasn't been manufactured yet, you say "fuck-it, give me my money back."

Now say out of 300 people who "pre-ordered," 10% decide they don't want it any more.  That number goes up if you're not able to deliver exactly on schedule for whatever reason, ranging from contracts that take precedence, to simple, natural production delays.  What do you do?  Refund them all?  10% might be your entire profit margin on the production run.  Or decline refunds and making people wait, thus hurting your public reputation?

Pre-pay group buys are just as much a minefield as "promised buyers," potentially even worse.

Its all about those gov contracts.  Even when companies declare civilians come first, once the gov greenbacks start rolling everyone sells out.

If they haven't sold out, they haven't received a big enough contract.
