That's the wild hair in my head right now.  12" barrel or so.  I know getting the gas system set up right is the key.  How hard will it be getting one set up right?  It will be a RRA so I can't do a piston setup.

You want that big a fireball by your face?
don't think the powder has finished burning in that short a barrel.

I think you will encounter cycling issues with so little barrel in front of the gas block, not to mention the gigantic fireball mentioned above.

with an adjustable gas block you should be able to get the gas dialed in.  most will argue against a 308 sbr but plenty of mfg's make short 308's.  i have a 12.5" ar-10 and with a blackout flash hider it's no flame thrower , unless your doing a mag dump

i likey an ar-10 sbr

I just sent off the Form 1 today for a 12.5" AR10.  I went with the Noveske Leonidas Barrel and pig brake for mine.

Sorry to throw this off topic but I take it normal RDIAS's and AR-15 trigger groups work with the Mega-Maten? Been thinking about doing a meten build and if it will seat the DIAS and a nive trigger, ill do it.

Ive shot the 12" LWRC REPR's and they are fantastic guns. Also shot about a 6" Remington 700 in .308 the other day, that was fun

Nope.
A new taller autosear has to be made (machined out of bar stock) with a different angle at the trip end
The BCG has to be ground for clearance and sear trips welded precisely in place as there are no Full Auto .308 Carriers available
Secondary buffer system added inside carrier to combat bolt bounce once its running
Then get it all spaced and timed correctly.

But once you get it right.....

i thought you were going to say it was hard to do or something

that gun is also bad ass approved , x10 because not only is it a 308 it's a 308 with a happy switch

why?
you wont reach the optimal ballistics of the round.
if you want a shorter setup, do it in 300bk

Because a 10.5" .308 is still waaaaay more powerful.

a .30 hole in something is not more devastating than a .5 hole with transferred energy.

at the speed the .308 will be traveling, the round will not fragment.

you'll just be punching a hole.

the 300bk will expand and transfer energy.
that's more powerful than punching a hole..

No

Yeah, I'm pretty sure a Barnes TSX at 2650 fps is even more devastating than one at 2200.

you'll start under 2300 fps.

what projectile will you be running that will fragment starting off under 2500 fps at the muzzle?

You know, there are projectiles that don't rely on fragmentation to be lethal.

I would trust a 308 way more than a 300 BO out of my 10 inch or 14 inch whether we're talking penetration, CQB, or 500 yard distant. Then again I don't know for sure because there ain't a box of 300 BO ammo within 50 miles of me, but the mom and pop general store has plenty of 308. 300 Blackout will be a footnote in firearms history when 308 will still be in the top 5 rifle calibers sold/reloaded.
P.S. If I fire a 20 rd mag as fast as I can pull the trigger, I MAY get two 12 inch large flashes at the most. Hardly the fire breathing, eyebrow singeing dragon people who don't own one claim it will be.

That's real nice. I had one of those brakes for a while. Got tired of my glasses getting blown off every time I did a mag dump.

Thank you. I need to get some new pictures of it.  I've had the TI phantom suppressor  for about a year now, and I finally have have the SWFA SS 1-6 on it.

I had a VFG on it the mounted pretty far forward the first time I did a mag dump. powder burned my hand a little bit.

Oh, and a SLR gas block which finally gave me easy control on my over gassing problem.    Unfortunately, I beat 500-600 pieces of brass before I got it.

Some can makers are okay with it, others aren't. It just depends.

A buddy of mine blew the core out of his can on his 16" .338 LM, so obviously there's limits.

OP
its been done quite a few times here.
from what i hear & have read, its an experiment until you get it right, so do some searches.

most get it to work easily & reliably w/ a can on it.
its w/ can off that they have initial reliability issues.

best bet, get a noveske leonidas barrel.

this is the gun that pushed me over the edge to build mine

i originally was going to build a 10.5"ish lightweight upper , but then lucked across all the parts to build a leonidas while i was waiting on my stamp , i always wanted a leonidas.  i was going to go back and still build the lightweight but that build is turning into an spr type build

I hope you enjoy yours as much as I do mine.   It has put many smiles on peoples faces.

Especially on days like tomorrow when I go and stretch it out to 1,000 yards.

Yeah, 12.5" Noveske barrel.  It's got the break on it, so with the SND-6 on it, my fillings stay in my mouth.

Defiantly was. That thing is deadly out to 600.  Had quite a few hits a 1000,  but that's more of a because I can shot. The picture was just a cell phone shot one of the guys snapped when I was screwing around at the end of the day. Turned out great though.
