so i was going to get sell a m1 carbine i have and use the money to get a nice 308 rifle
at first i was all remington 700, nice proven long range rifle
but alot of people talked good about savage so i thought maybe a savage rifle
but then  mossberg mvp, (i love the fact that it, doesn't need a $300 conversion, then $80 mags)
but i like to build things, i thought maybe a fal
then i saw a couple of m1as going for a reasonable price so i thought maybe a m1a
then i thought maybe building or buying an ar10
but i went to my local dealer and shouldered a mvp and fell in love with it, so its going to be a mvp .308 flex,

So, my question to you is whats your favorite 308 rifle?they all have a different purpose but im talking overall, you have to pick one, or listen to obama talk for an hour, which do you pick? Obviously a $3,000 might be everyone's favorite but keep in mind the price.

My old Tikka 595 is my favorite 308. I've used it for everything from groundhogs to whitetails. It's extremely accurate with bullets from 110 grains up to 150 grains. I've never had a reason to load any heavier bullets.

I only have one in .308. It's a saiga and. Wouldn't say that I love it. I like  it as it is light weight but not an accurate rifle by any means. I plan on building a bolt gun with the Remington 700. But the savage is a great gun for the price. An AR 10 is also a great option.

I have three in .308 and they are like children...different, but I still love them.

1.  DPMS .308 AR SASS - 18"
2.  Bushmaster .308 ORC AR - 16"
3.  Savage FCP-SR bolt action - 24"

What's weird is that only the Bushy is still currently being made and that won't be for long, as the Gen II DPMS platform will supersede it.
All 3 are more accurate than I am.

This is easy! I've got my perfect 5.56 (a Colt LE6920), my perfect intermediate AR (a custom Loki .264LBC/6.5 Grendel) and my perfect big bore (an Alexander Arms .50 Beowulf). All I need is my perfect .308 AR and that's an easy choice...a LaRue Tactical PredatOBR 7.62 Suitcase with 14.5" pinned/welded muzzle device.

The LaRue Tactical PredatOBR 7.62 14.5" is my dream rifle, unfortunately with my constantly worsening medical issues I've lost the ability to hunt and fish and be outdoors like I used to so I don't "need" one but I don't "need" the others either.  It sucks really bad because it was my favorite things to do so now I just get to go to the range maybe once every few months and shoot which is better than nothing and sure is fun.  The chances of affording one is pretty slim but that's the one I'd love to have.

What is it you want the rifle for?
AR308 is fun at the range, good for plinking.

M1a's are great to shoot, but not particularly optics friendly.
They lack the flexibility of more modern rifles.

I would prefer a bolt rifle for hunting or longer range shooting.
You will have to handload to reap the accuracy benefits of a bolt gun.
308 would not be my 1st choice in a bolt gun as technology has advanced a long way since the 308.

Some people steer clear of the new Remingtons as there have been recent problems.
Those people seem to lean toward Winchester m70 instead of Remington.

If you like to tinker you can build a rifle on a savage action, or buy a cheap used savage rifle to start your build.
You can build a pretty decent rifle this way.

In a bolt-action - Remy 700. And in a semi - a Scar 17 or an N6.

When I think 308, I think long range accuracy....but then I like accuracy in everything I own. I hope for one ragged hole at 100 yards. That being said, I know some of my stuff it not capable.

The FAL and maybe the m1a are more than likely not...

So, then you have bolt guns and the 308 AR variants... There are lots of choices for bolt guns that in general terms start a 1/2 the price of a base entry AR. The MVP gets good reviews. Savage and Remington are can't go wrong.. I'd recommend getting both. Personally I went with get   both    all four...

My favorite 308 to shoot is the M1A, standard model with camo synthetic stock, iron sights.

My most accurate 308 is the Remington 700 PSS with Nightforce scope.
