@tortilla-flats If you're still considering a short 6.8 I know someone in TX who has a LWRC Six8 PSD with a special 6.8 M4-2000 they are willing to let go.

Thanks, but I'll pass. I just recently understood the dynamic with a dedicated lower so I'm still researching that.

Early on I did lots of testing with various mouse gun calibers, bullet weights, brands, etc.
I’ve done countless bullet extractions, hanging dead carcass shoots, various barrel length tests, steel plate penetration tests, barrel length velocity comparisons, etc

Grendel, 6.8SPC, 5.56x45mm, 7.62x39, 300whisper/blk
9mm, .40s&w , 22 Valkyrie

300BLK performed way worse than any other calibers.
So much so, I don’t so much as own an upper chambered in the caliber.

I really wanted 300BLK to work. Spent lots of time, effort, and money looking for the right combo. Back when I started this endeavor Hog Hunting at night and the 300blk were very new to the masses. It was called “The best hog hunting caliber”. I soon realized that was just propaganda put out by folks like Ron Silvers, the guy connected with AAC at the time who helped get SAAMI spec for the 300whisper aka 300BLK and we’re tied in with Remington which both companies were soon after bought by Cerebrus holdings.

These folks had never seen a Hog in the wild. Let alone kill one and done any field testing.

I soon realized it was not the killer round that they painted it up to be, was a 50yd gun, and the only ammo that would shoot sub 3moa groups was handloads and factory loaded Hornady.

In closing, inside 75 yards, 110gr rounds in a 16” barrel will do fine. Just keep in mind, there’s a wall there in terms of consistency and it’s a crap shoot further than that.

That sounds like classic over-hype to me.  I also remember seeing an article that claimed 300blk was THE new deer caliber.  Once again, incorrect.

It "can" be used on those targets, assuming one is within certain parameters, but that wasn't what it was designed to do.    ACC massaged 300 Whisper into something that could replace an MP5SD with subs, while using basically Mk1218 parts and giving it "Draco-like" power on supers.....out of really short barrels without obnoxious behavior.

Out of a 16" barrel, there is no reason to expect it to outperform 6.8spc so 6.5G or 300HAM'r or 350L or 7.62x39 if they are also out of 16" barrels.  Heck, once you get past 100 yards, it may not out perform 5.56 depending on bullets used (like an SMK or TMK).  300blk can deliver 1400 ft.lbs at the muzzle out of a 16", but it WILL drop off fairly quickly.

Cut the barrel down by half 8", and that is where it shines.  Most of the other SAAMI calibers become extremely inefficient, and lack the capability of running both supers and subs.   But you have to treat 300blk like a super-duper sub-gun/mini-micro rifle with an 8" barrel, which is what it is.

And to get the best performance (especially out of the shorties) you are using only a handful of rounds at closer ranges.  110gr Tac-tx, 110gr V-max, 110gr Varmageddon, and 115gr Controlled Chaos, and maybe 120gr Sig HT/SBR.  (Notice three of those are light weight, all copper rounds specifically designed for 300blk, and other two are light for caliber .308 varmint rounds that happen to work well at 300blk speeds up close).

8" 300 HAM'R barrel was on clearance so I bought one. This might be the ticket.

I don't regret buying mine.  I hand load most of what I shoot, and while the 95gr CC is going away, it and SBR SOCOM powder are my favorite combination for the 8".  Second is the 110gr Vmax/Varmageddon and CFE BLK.

I have one sitting on my desk. I was thinking of putting in a CMMG Dissent, but they are kind of spendy. I may just do a conventional build in the meantime. I wonder what the recoil of the Hamr will be.

How was the recoil? Did you fire it without the can?

Recoil was fine. It actually felt just a tiny smidge less sharp than supers in my Honey Badger.
Did not fire it without the can.

Since you are in Texas, is Ham'r ammo available at local shops and stores?
Link Posted: 8/25/2024 11:14:22 PM EDT

I didn't/don't check. I rarely buy anything locally anymore. The only shops that I would check are Scheels and the range at RifleGear. I'll remember to check the next time I'm there.

I fully expect to be reloading this caliber.

I concur on this.

For some strange reason, i shoot better with the 6.8 than the 300 suppressed.

I'm still wondering if AAC will pick up 6.8spc since they are offering 6.5G and 6ARC is coming up?

I would buy the shit out of it. I love AAC and 6.8. I'm grateful for S&B, but would much prefer American made.
