The Question?
  Gunsmoke Enterprises shorty buffer tube uses a 23lb 1911 recoil spring.
  What is the AR recoil spring rated? (lb)
  For lack of better wording.
  How much spring is needed for cycling?

The Idea!
   Pistol recoil spring around the gastube, connected to bolt carrier. Much like ZM

Those are most likely piston guns.
