Anyone have pictures of an A1 rifle with a cut carry handle.  Any one have any info on this?

ETA: as in before there were flat top AR's, cutting off the carry handle to attach a weaver rail and an optic.

....but why do it??

unless the handle has been damaged, why would anyone cut up a good receiver just to mount an optic..especially since you can get flat tops so cheap!

I'm thinking of doing a retro SPR type rifle with some parts I have laying around.  Think A1 with wood stock set, 18" barrel, three prong flash hider, and redfield accurange scope

BTW:  Don't worry, I wouldn't cut up a good upper receiver

if it's just the ears of the handle that are messed up, you could do a retro high power style rifle like this one

I remember the article in SF magazine around 1985 about the Marine M-16a2 prototype trial, their was a photo of a M-16a1 with the handle cut off and front sightbase shaved off like bushmaster sells. The article stated the army never wanted A2 and wanted 2 skip to the A3 which is what they called it in the article. Also I remember the a2 had a round handgaurd cap. I wish I had those old SF mags today. I've never ben able to find this photo agian.

I think there is a "CH" forge upper receiver on GB with a broken ear.

Earlier this month there was a '84 SGW rifle at a local show that had an A1 upper that was cut down and some kind of picatinny rail attached, some (brand) name was engraved on it but I can't remember what it was.  The seller said the original purchaser was a sniper in the Marines and had the modifications done right after he bought it.

Its not an A1 but the idea is the same.  Below are photos of 1) an original Sudanese AR10, 2) modified Sudanese AR10.
There is probably a big story about why the mods were done.  On the brighter side this rifle could probably be owned
in California.

I knew a guy who did it in the late 90s when the market was very different.
