which i was getting into ARs in the 90s, the trijicon reflex ii was a high end optic.  no batteries to fail and the 12.5" MOA triangle was nice.

back then no rails were available.  i had to dremel a rib off my handguard and screw a small section of scope rail on there to mount a surefire and use inner tube to hold the switch in place.

Here is my 11.5 IDF build i recently finished.  Out of all my rifles, this is one of the most fun to shoot.

I love looking at these rifles, so much so ive read all 105 pages of the IDF/kiss thread and all 3 of these. Working on my IDF clone now, just need a lower, bcg, and lpk

My pseudo IDF clone is a mix of retro and modern. I don't too much care for carbines, but I did want to build one, so I built what was the perfect carbine in my eyes. Modern receivers with A2 adjustable sights, two position mil-spec buffer tube and aluminum stock (Essential Arms), Colt 1/7 twist lightweight barrel, FAB Defense six hole small diameter handguards, and an AO Precision bolt carrier group. It also has a slip ring and original A1 pistol grip along with an A1 flash suppressor. Very light and unique, and I love it.

I like it but one flaw in your thought of an ultimate carbine...the slip ring!

All it takes is trying to take off a set of hand guards on a tight slip ring by yourself one time and you quickly realize why they went to the delta ring!

My IDF project is on the bottom with an SP1 receiver and Colt 6520 barrel.  I thought I was going to go slickside but after looking at the pics, I guess a1 it is. Also shown with a 723 clone upper and the xm177 style barrel.

Thanks. I used the slip ring because I like the look. I also have a handguard tool.

Hot off the work bench this morning. My IDF mainly Colt parts Model 653 bastard. Great little tool. Range report this evening time permitting.

Hit the range this afternoon with this new to me IDF clone Colt Model 653. Colt C H M16A1 upper with proper C marker M16 BCG. A2 ejection port cover and aftermarket M16A1 FA. M16 flat slip ring, LSO 6 hole hand guards, New Colt AR6920 16" lightweight profile barrel 1/7 (cut, pinned/welded to 16" OAL). M16A2 PWA Commando (Pre-ban) lower with all Colt LPK. M16A1 pistol grip. Colt fiberlite stock w/NoDak spud CAR tube, H2 buffer. Zahol sling and front hand guard band.

Fired almost 150 rounds of trouble free shooting this afternoon. Used IMI M193, Privi Partisan M193, and LC M193 55gr ammo. No hic cups or FTF,FTE etc. I'm very happy with this set up.

This pic shows the C7 type upper. The majority of the IDF carbines I see have the A1 type with no brunton bump.

How much of a rarity are these uppers in IDF issue?

Very Nice! I love my IDF Carbine, it's so light weight and well balanced.....overall joy to shoot. Seems everyone gravitates towards my IDF build when it isn't even close to the most expensive or unique AR build but the light weight and IDF bands/sling make it standout.

Thanks HipShot. I really like this little rife. Almost as much as my XM177E2. Still too early to tell but a quick runner up. I did notice at range my brass was flying out at the 1530 to 1600 direction. Most all my other retro rifles throw the brass at a 1300-1500 or almost forward of me. Guess I'm still fine since I did head space check before assembling barrel and it was in spec. Brass showed no signs of over pressure or improper head space. So guess it's a mood point for now.

When I ordered my IDF sling and front hand guard band from Zahol.org on ebay, they didn't offer (or I couldn't find) the stock band. So I'll keeping searching for one at a reasonable price w/shipping. Overall very pleased with outcome of rifle. Took a while to find all the parts I needed/wanted. Patience is not one of my better attributes. I'll be on the lookout for a original A1 FA & ejection port door as time goes on. No hurry and no rush.

After finally talking about it for awhile I finally completed my build, just waiting on my CH and BCG to get in.  Got my order from Zahal in less than 3 weeks, very happy with it but may end up switching out the sling later on since I'm more of a two point style sling guy than one point but figured I'd give it a try.  I can't wait to get this out to the range and test her out, super light and fits like a glove.  Specs are:
-DPMS A1/C7 upper
-PSA Afghan blem lower
-DPMS lpk
-A1 pistol grip, A1 flash hider, and slip ring (thanks to Boywonder!)
-Tear Drop FA (thanks to PIT Hal143)
-Handguard wraps and sling from Zahal
-PSA premium BCG
-regular CH

Am planning on switching out the A1 aperture with an A2 that's on order

Ordered the stock band this morning and one of those funky magazine carriers that insert into magazine well. Had to order these items from their home website, not ebay due to they were not offered on that page. So shipping was not free. Will post pictures. Thanks HipShot.
