I'm looking to build a Colt SMG replica.  I've got a few AR's but am not up to speed on all the knowledge of parts, etc.  I've got the rear site assembly with correct 9mm aperture.  Next I'm working on getting the stock and handguards.  I figured out the handguards are skinny CAR and the buttstocks were CAR style plastic, not aluminum.  Does anyone know if it's a 2 position or 4 position as I see there's two types?  The smg came out in the 80's so I assume the receivers are black not gray as early m16's were?

No problem, I'm patient.  Whenever you get around to it, I'll build a 2nd one.

You need to be more specific around these parts.
Colt made a few different variants of their 9mm SMG.

From the sound of it though (skinny CAR handguards) we're talking about the 635.

They were built in a bit of a time of transition.  Grey and Black receivers can be found from what I've seen, but grey seems more common.  Mix of slip rings and Delta Rings.  Definitely the skinny handguards and the plastic N1 style stock.

That's the ticket.  I'll have to set my a1 next to my a2 upper as I haven't noticed a difference on the gray and black.

Depending on how early of an SMG you want to make, it may or may not have had the gas deflector either.
The first ones used the standard e-port door iirc.

My original 635 upper was later, and black, with deflector. The earlier ones were grey with no 9mm deflector. All I had left to do was to get the 2-pc mag blocks pinned and apply for my SBR - figured I'd roll it as a pistol until I got the stamp, but then the Great Recession hit, I couldn't find work, and ended up selling the whole kit plus my NDS black lower. (I had bought 2, one black, one grey.) Good luck with the build - the 635 is a great gun. Make sure you get a ramped bolt, and I like the SS pins for bling.

I'll be gettin a ramped bolt.  Did the 635 use and A1 lower?  It appears so from the one above?  I was just going to use a PSA mag block as trying to droll and pin a colt in the right place has a serious pucker factor.

Yes, standard A1 Lower.  You can find the Colt Mag blocks around for usually $75-100ish.  You don't need to pin them yourself, another member here, M60Joe is the goto guy to pin  blocks, but a drop in kit will work fine too.

Just to weigh in on colors of the Colt 9mm.....

Early Pre-ban 6450's were Grey in color and sported the gas deflectors with a 3/4 ejection cover door. (shown below)  BUT...Not shown on the example in the link but I have seen early original NIB 6450's sporting an aluminum stock also (which has left me scratching my head, as these guns were from the late 80's & early 90's)

It looks like the front sight base is A1 style.  Can anyone confirm?  Does anyone have drawings on the barrel? Otherwise I assume it's similar to an a1 with a step to but the front site against and then profile the rest accordingly?

Anyone?  Otherwise I'll try to dig up an A1 barrel drawing and modify it for the shorter length.

The 635 uses a standard, non-F marked FSB.  There's nothing special there.

The 632, 633, and 636 each have specialized FSBs.

I don't have a drawing of the barrel offhand.  10" 9mm Colt barrels come up periodically on GB and the EE.

Thank you.  I placed an order for a slickside 604 upper from Nodak today as well as an A1 lower.  I've always bought complete kits in the past but I'm enjoying scrounging up parts.  Non F marked could be either A1 or A2 with the difference being the barrel diameter where it is mounted?

Treasure hunting is at least half the fun of this sport.

There's an upper in the EE right now.
