Chuck over at GunLab.net has some cool pics he took of an early M16 belt fed conversion.

Who wants to clone this one?

Besides me that is.

The AR15 belt fed is a clone.  AR10s came before.

Valkyrie Armament makes a very close copy based on that original design. It would be neat to see a retro type rifle with that conversion. It will cost you $3600 though.

Might be a stupid question, but why the stubby grip?

This looks like something Morg would like but I think it needs a 607 butt stock

Ciener's units are a direct copy of the early units, he was/is inside the KAC circle and had full access during development as did Geoff at Ares with his Shrike, one of the reasons he relocated from Va. The Ciener kit requires the lower permanently modified consequently not many are going to separated from their nfa host at this day in time, they come up for sale from time to time but folks are usually pretty proud of them.

I've worked on (and hence, had an opportunity to test-fire) one of the Ciener copies.  Colt only made a few, Ciener did less than 20 full autos, and a handful of semi autos.  Valkyrie started doing them again around 2010 or so, and you could send your gun in to be modified, or buy a complete semi auto gun to stick your RDIAS in, but the the Valkyrie unit required specially modified links.

For RR owners, the Shrike was a better choice, since it didn't require any lower modifications.

Makes me wonder, what is the status of belt-fed in states that have mag capacity limits?  Would be kind of sadly hilarious if a 20rd magazine was a no-go but 200rds linked up was just fine.

Just cut for compactness.  Done on the 607 and a few carbines IIRC

California has been that way for some time.  Legacy mags, legacy belts.

NY is a sad sack of a state on this issue.  Legally you cannot belt together more than 10 rounds in a single belt.

I had the chance to handle that weapon at Knob Creek in 2008. I spoke with the gentleman who stated it was for sale at the time. I didn't have the coin but I did offer him 1K in cash for the furniture at the time and he turned me down. I even had mint replacement furniture on hand and he wouldn't take it.
