I would avoid Sportsman's guide, I and others have had some really bad / shady experiences with them.  I would never buy from them again after what they did to me.

What do you mean Federal lost the Lake City contract to Winchester?  Aren't both companies owned by VISTA?

Winchester is owned by Olin. Federal/CCI/Speer and now Remington ammunition (Remington as of just last year) are owned by Vista (formerly part of ATK before Vista spun off around 2015...ATK was purchased by Northrop Grumann in 2018).

Olin/Winchester got the contract to run Lake City again starting in October 2020 (they had previously run it from 1985-2001). ATK (Federal/CCI/Speer) ran Lake City from 2001-2020.

What's the beef with Sportsman's Guide? Just curious, I haven't ordered from them in 10+ years (their prices became less competitive a long while ago and I stopped paying attention to them until I heard about the Igman ammo). I remember getting crates of surplus ammo in spam cans from them back in the day though, never had any issues back then.

Is it just me but doesn't it seem like the prices have stabilized for a pretty long time?
Not sure when was the last price increase/decrease.
Don't be fooled by the cheap advertised prices because those people are charging insane shipping.

Yes prices have stabilized. Long gone are the days of .22cpr shipped IMI M193/M855 during the great blowout of the failed Clinton election bet by MidwayUSA in 2017 to early 2019.

If you account for the loss of the purchasing power of your money (inflation) prices are somewhat comparable to the salad days, assuming you can get good ammo for ~40-40 cents per round shipped.

Google is a powerful tool….

Cliff notes:
Explosion in 2017 killed a person and eventually contributed to a $373 million loss on the contract.
The company also told the Army it wants an early release from the Lake City contract, which is now set to expire in 2020.

Global has a 10% off sale on Igman. Run of the mill range ammo, be advised that flash holes may not be on center. Just posting as a source to compare. I see other sites have it for .10/cheaper, but may not factor in shipping.

Are you dead set on it being 5.56? Or will 55gr .223 work?

Sportsman's Guide has Igman 55gr .223 for $351 w/free shipping if you are a member. If you're not a member, you can try it for $10 for a 3 month membership. Orders over $49 ship free.

So, if I add the ammo, 3-month membership, and tax at my location, it comes to about $390/1000.

Problem is, that incident can happen with any ammunition and has happened before, even with those that have a trusted name.

Could barely listen to the idiot who felt his info was just as important as playing his "sick beats" in the background, but thank you all the same.
I'll look for other anecdotes like his and try to build a consensus of opinion on whether Zinc Point is good to go or to be avoided at all costs.

Looks like Winchester has another ammo rebate (they seem to be doing this every 3 or so months now).

I took advantage of the first two ammo rebates but, unlike VISTA, it takes a LOOOONG time to get the rebate from Winchester.  You will get it, but you're going to be waiting months, FYI.  I still haven't gotten the check from the December rebate yet!  However, with the rebate factored in, you WILL get quality Lake City 5.56 ammo for under .40 cents a round if you don't mind waiting.

Velocity kept changing the price on their PPU M193, so I haven’t posted about it for a couple weeks.

Seems they have settled in at $400 shipped per K. Decent deal if you don’t want to wait for a rebate.

https://www.velocityammosales.com/products/5-56-nato-ppu-military-grade-xm193-55-grain-fmj-case

That being said, if you are up for jumping through the rebate hoops, the Winchester rebate mentioned by someone a few posts up combined with the ammo linked below would come out to $455 - $75 = $380 shipped plus tax.

Not only is MEN not better, but it is much worse.  Slower velocity with thicker metal jackets to be "more humane".  Does NOT fragment in gel tests.  I would buy generic 223 fmj before this!

Guess it depends on how you define "better".  I probably shoot 5-6000 rounds a year.  Never shot a person.  So for my practice ammo potential lethality is pretty far down on the list.  Don't really care how a bullet is going to fragment on a steel plate or a berm after it's put a hole in paper.  Much more interested in whether a round is accurate.  Consistent/reliable.  Clean.  Good quality brass.  Judged against that criteria MEN is a lot better that most generic XM193/PMC X-tac ammo and worth a small premium to me, particularly if I'm going to be shooting out to 200 yards and beyond.  Nice middle ground between cheap blasting ammo and expensive match ammo.

Do I keep a couple of hundred rounds of Hornady TAP ammo on hand for a home defense/SHTF scenario?  Absolutely.  Am I going to shoot 5000 rounds of it a year to put holes in paper?  Nope.

You're the one who had to proclaim how it was "better" with no explanation.  I had to set the record straight in case there were readers who believed you.

I can get "practice" ammo that is more than accurate enough to hit the bull at 200 yards without compromising leathality performance and being more affordable to boot while also having good quality brass.

You say you don't need leathality for practice, why do you need ultra accuracy?  The dirt berm gona notice your slightly wider practice group?  Why do you care if your holes on paper are slightly wider for practicing?

If I am a bullseye shooter accuracy snob, there is much better ammo to get accuracy wise.  However, I don't get off on shooting a fraction of a inch tigher groups from a clamped bench position.

If performance wasn't a consideration at all, I'd just buy cheaper .223 for "practice" and not spend more money than needed on 5.56 ammo.  My philosiphy though, if I'm going to be buying that much 5.56 ammo for practice, I'd want it to be able to perform double duty if needed.  I don't want stacks of ammo that I wouldn't feel comfortable using if needed, esp if there is no real price difference between the two.

I really have no interest in getting into a p*ss*ng contest with you and I certainly didn't take offense at your initial post.  Perfectly fair to point out that MEN does not fragment as easily as standard XM193 and, in that sense, is WORSE than other options which are cheaper.  In fact, I learned something because I didn't know that.

However, I think it's equally fair to say that, if you care about accuracy, MEN is BETTER than most XM193 and may be worth a slight premium.  And I don't think I'm alone in caring about how accurate a round of ammunition (or a rifle for that matter) is.   Presumably that's why there are so many threads devoted to this topic.  So sure, if I'm practicing shooting a 6" steel plate at 200 yards in the broader scheme of things it really doesn't matter if I hit it 15 times out of 20 or 5.  But to me it's worth paying .6-.7 per round to get better results.  And you're right, if I'm shooting at a 10" plate offhand at 30 yards I'll use the cheapest reliable ammo I can find because the accuracy improvement I get with MEN over PMC X-tac, Winchester XM193, etc. doesn't make a damn bit of difference.

At the end of the day, this is a thread devoted to the price and availability of ammo, not one devoted to an in depth review of the pluses and minuses of any particular brand.  If you've shot MEN in the past and like it a price of under .50 per round is a good deal.  If you don't like it no one is forcing you to buy it.

We can talk about pistol ammo deals too, right?

Ammo Supply Warehouse has S&B 124g 9mm for $275/free shipping.

I've shot a bunch of this stuff over the years and it's always been reliable.

Very disappointed that ammo prices haven't really dropped in a while.
A bonus check is coming in and expected a drop in price by now as the plan was to pick up a few cases.

If you adjust for inflation, a $200 case of 9mm in 2016 would be $255 now which is about where we are at. $300 case of 5.56 would be $380 now, so a bit more to come down there but we are close.

PPU for $0.41/rd free shipping seems to be the cheapest

Also,
Swiss Saltech 7.62x51 147gr (very nice ammo according to the last batch)
Outdoor Limited and Velocity have it for $0.74/rd with free shipping (SGAmmo is already sold out, but had it even cheaper)

Came to post this deal. Hadn’t used it before so I googled it and a bunch of threads going back across a few years says it’s great. Glad I ordered one of the 520ct cases. There was still a bit left when I ordered. Good value 308 is tougher to find than 5.56 for sure.
