Well I sheared off a barrel index pin. The remains are flush with the barrel extension (which looks OK).

Not sure how it came to pass, as I'd think I'd have to be putting a little muscle into it to get it past 80 ft. lbs. and I really wasn't. The receiver's got a little shiny spot, but I think it's OK, too.

So what's the best way besides sending it to ADCO to remove the remaining pin? And then can I just tap another in?

ETA - After a little poking at it, it seems it's pretty soft metal (at least this one is). So now I'm thinking that perhaps I could put it in a drill press and use a small (1/16) bit to drill into it and either a.) it would spin loose or b.) I could start a screw in the resulting hole and pull it out that way.

So then:
1.) How deep is the indexing pin hole below the surface of the barrel extension?
2.) Are these plans nuts?

The center of the pin will be softer than the outsides. You should be able to drill into it but use a high quality drill bit. None of the harbor freight crap. You might be able to use an easy our to get it out If that doesn't work you might be able to drill and tap it although the chances of breaking a tap off in it are high.

I sometimes have to remove broken dowel pins and taper pins at work. Sometimes if the above doesn't work i have to put it in the mill and end mill it out.

I can't remember how deep the hole is so i can't help ya there.

If all else fails you might find a local place that removed broken bolts and such with a EDM machine.

It's a good plan ... I would go forward with what you have described it should work fine.

Here is a pic of one I had to remove on a loose barrel extension ... it shows the length of the pin ... hope that helps.

Epilogue:

I eventually wound up drilling it out. The biggest single piece was, well, you've probably seen bigger fleas.

While it was a devil to get out, it was softer than barrel steel and although it did shear, the aluminum receiver's OK.

Good job.

Feels good not having to pay someone else to do it, doesn't it.

What's the marks on the extension that seem to originate at the pin?
More importantly, do you have a plan to prevent this in the future?

Skid marks from the pin that sheared.

As far as the future, who knows? I think it must have been a substandard index pin as it sheared well below 80 ft. lbs. of torque.
