While I have looked at the stick on top, AK-74 mags pouches are a bit different because they aren't the same form factor as their 47 cousins, and you can sometimes use AR mag pouches.  Some work, some don't.  I'd like to try and compile a list of what pouches work for AK-74 mags to help out buyers in the future.  Nothing like going to a tactical gear store (or the Post Exchange) and trying stuff out!

The mag pouches I'm using currently are Condor Triple Kangaroo Pouches.  Mags fit well and draw smoothly, and even without the kangaroo straps there's decent retention:

I've also tested fit with the Tac-Shield Triple Speed Load Mag Coyote Brown and they work great.  Almost got them over the Condor pouches but the Condor ones were on sale for a good price.  Good retention there also, and smooth draw.  Here's a blurry pic of the fit:

For admin storage I was using this pouch for a while (don't know the brand, got it used for a good price - think it's a SAW drum pouch? has an interior velco divider.  If you know the mfg please let me know and I'll update the OP) but I wouldn't ever want to run and gun with it - poor interior retention:

TX-Zen adds these rigs work great:

SPOSN Smersh LBE rig (Each pouch has a divider to hold two magazines, or three in each pouch with the divider removed for a total of 12 magazines on your person)

SPLAV M23 Pioneer. Coupled with a dump pouch, they are great rigs.

What pouches have I tried that don't work well?
Tactical Tailor Triple Mag 30 round 5.56 Pouches - A pain to insert and impossible to pull out once you had three in there.
Tactical Tailor Triple Mag 20 round 5.56 Pouches (aka Low Profile) - A pain to insert and slightly less impossible to remove

S.T.R.I.K.E. AK/M4 Double Mag - single 74 mags fit in OK, but not enough velcro for secure mag retention if you were doing any sort of moving.

I prefer HSGI Tacos for tactical reloads and have been using them on my Tactical Tailor MAV for a long time. The TT-MAV is great for AK's but isn't well suited for both my SVD and 74's, so I broke out my old LBE and started using it as a first line setup, and then wanted a dedicated chest rig for each kind of rifle.

Recently my new UW Gear AK74 rig came in the mail and I took some pics today. Combined with my LBE, the UW will be for carrying mags and the LBE will be used to tactical reload. I'll be doing a review of it soon.

What about the MAV made it unsuitable for your 74's?  Also when you do your review shoot me a PM with a link and I'll update the OP to add it in.

The TT MAV with Taco's is great for AK's, probably my favorite rig I've tried so far. By not being suitable for both the SVD and AK74 I mean that I wasn't able to use it as an SVD rig just by changing pouches, but it ran great for my 74's. I was after something I could use for either rifle but it didn't work out as well as I wanted.

The HSGI Taco pouches are very nice indeed. They work for any type of weapon system I might pick up and run on any given day. They rock.

Not a very close-up shot, but I use the SPOSN Smersh LBE rig for my AK74 magazines. Each pouch has a divider to hold two magazines, or three in each pouch with the divider removed for a total of 12 magazines on your person. I purchased this rig from soviet-propaganda. It's very modular so you can set it up for as many different roles as you need.

My second favorite rig is the SPLAV M23 Pioneer. Coupled with a dump pouch, they are great rigs.

Mil surplus 4-cell pouch for storage/organization. HSGI Tacos for actual field use.
In fact, I use Tacos for any magazine or a second backup pistol.

Anyone else have any rigs they recommend?

I use a Specter chest rig. Adjustable flaps work with AR, '74, and 20rnd '47 mags. The 30rnd '47 mags have a bit too much curve to fit well.

East German rain camo. Anything else is a travesty.

That's what I use for my 74 right now. However, I'd love to see UW gear do a chest rig in East German Rain!

Got a pic of it with the 74 mags?
