I loved my first China 223 AK from a dealer at a gun show years ago. That guy couldent wait to get it off his table. Even though It worked like a charm. Then back when I got the SLR 106UR. They were Like AK Krink red headed step children. And that was pushing it to be in the AK family with that filthy 5.56 nato round corsing through their Mags and chambers. However they were built in the Bulgarian Military factory right along side the SLR 107UR's. So the vast majority of the masses acepted them. Now anything polish go's for quality and that includes the Beryl that subsequently became Poland's standard rifle In 2011. Replacing the Tantal's much liked round in this forum the 5.45 for the 5.56 Nato Beryl. So with Bulgaria and Poland's modernised AK's moving onword quite functionaly with the 5.56 round.

Now with all the posts now including 5.56 AK's going on around here.

So I ask you will the 5.56 AK make superstar status in 2013? Or will it just finaly get the recognition its long over due in AK's

For me it's..... 7.62 > 5.56 > 5.45

Just personal preference for me. I have a few of each. Love me all

If 5.56 was as cheap as 5.45 the shooting community would have greeted it with arms wide open.  Since it's not cheap, and some feel it's not as reliable in the AK platform...I don't see it gaining near the popularity the other calibers did.

I switched from 7.62x39 to 5.56 a few years back due to the fact the ranges I go to do not allow ammo like Wolf, Barnaul, etc. that use bi-metal jacketed bullets.  I bought some Fiocchi brass 7.62x39 years ago at around $7 per 20 round box, but that was a while back.  7.62x39 brass is sometime hard to come by and its pricey.  If 7.62x39 brass were relatively inexpensive or if I had a good spot to shoot which would allow the bi-metal ammo, then I'd grab an AKM.  I do love that classic Cold War era AKM look and feel.

However, once I made the switch, I really started to like my 5.56 AK's.  With all the options for and availability of .223 and 5.56x45, it's hard to beat this combo.  Anyway, that's my .02.

I have zero interest in a 5.56 AK.  Only thing that I'd give in to is a mini Beryl.  I'd still rather it be in 5.45

The 5.56 AK's don't seem to be super popular, I think in part due to the lack of there ever being a standardized design. Bulgarian, Polish, Russian, Romanian, Yugo, and the Chinese all had their own take on how to build a 5.56 Kalashnokov. I've had my SLR-106FR since 2008 and it might be my favorite AK. It's pretty rough on brass so I mainly shoot steel cased stuff through it, but it eats everything just the same. I bought a good sized pile of waffle mags for it initially so I wouldn't have to worry if they went up in price or became hard to get.

I think the prices on 5.45 ammo and AK-74 for the better part of the last decade is another reason the 5.56 isn't as popular. Crates of Russian or Bulgarian surplus 7N6 ammo for $210. 12 packs of surplus mags from ORF for $36 if I remember correctly. Black, brown, saddle tan, firebrick red, plum, true black. Collect 'em all! If the prices had been what they are today, I think 5.56 would have been a more attractive option for people who wanted something other than 7.62.

I want one in 5.56 but thats only because I have 7.62 and 5.45 already.

I myself don't have a problem with 5.56 AK's, I personally just prefer the ballistics of the 5.45 to that of the 5.56. As mentioned above I too think the lack of standardization, especially mags, have kinda hindered the popularity of it.

I prefer 5.45, but am in the process of collecting all the parts for a Saiga 223/556 AK conversion right now. Reason, I don't have one yet. That and I think it would be nice to have one in a domestic caliber, even though I do own ARs.

My next buy will probably be a 5.56 AK, SLR 106CR more than likely.
I already own an SGL21, so I have 7.62x39 covered.
I don't plan to get into 5.45x39 unless it becomes widely available here. I don't like getting into a platform that I cannot get ammo locally.

+1.

That is why I have ARs for.

I picked up a Sig 516 AR and made sense for me to complement it by getting a couple of AKs in 5.56. I'm lucky enough to have a few ranges that allows steel cases ammo so it's all I use for both AK and AR. It's the same price as the cheapest steel cased 7.62x39. I do have a good stash of 5.45 which I picked up when they were a little cheaper but believe those days are gone. Maybe after the election it would come back to normal. Maybe.

I'd take one if someone threw it at me. Can 5.56 use 5.45 mags?

That would be the biggest deal maker/breaker for me. I don't want to have to stockpile a new type of magazine.

I had a SGL 21 and swapped with someone at M4Carbine.net for a SLR 106 and couldn't be happier. My biggest thing was that I wanted to standardize calibers. I liked the idea of 5.45, but generally my rule is: If I can't go to walmart and buy the ammo I don't buy the rifle. My AK is not my weapon of choice for gun fights because it's not what I train with the most, but I will say that it is by far my favorite rifle to shoot!

None of the 3 Walmarts near me carry it. Hell, there isn't even a gun store within reasonable driving distance of me that I know of that carries 5.45.

I think a 223 ak is a decent thing to have. I was wanting one for a while, but just could not justify the cost, considering I was already set with my AR.  A while back I found a company, magnolia, that was making an adaptor to use ar 223 mags in an ak. This would make a great, rugged rifle in my view. The job requires a little machining to the mag well, and so, while I like the idea, for now it is just a bit too much of a hassle for me considering I have the AR already. If a company out there did a factory conversion on the saiga 223 to take the ar mags, that would be sweet. An AK, using the same mag and ammo as my AR...Nice!

For reliability, AK was designed to shoot tapper cartridge such as 7.62x39 and 5.45x39.

If ammo price of 556/223 ever get below 7.62x39 or 5.45x39 then there would be a larger market for 223/556 AK.

well that sucks!

As for the price of 223, Tula ammo (also at my Wal-mart) is $4.99 a 20rnd box here. As cheap as Tula 7.62x39.

I'm more talking myself into this than anyone else. I have the parts, I just need the Saiga to convert now.

The AR does .223/5.56 so well that I don't see the point in having an AK in that caliber. Back when AKs were cheap, I can understand it, but at today's prices? No.

I wll stick with the 7.62x39 its what the AK is meant to be.

Some people prefer the AK platform. I have an AR, but I like shooting AKs more. Being able to share ammo between them is handy.

I'd love to see Arsenal bring over some of their milled 5.56 rifles they sell all over the world, particularly in South America! The only other 5.56 AK that interests me is the Polish Archer, at least the second generation that will soon be here(more Beryl like), hopefully with the AR mag adapter. For now the price of 5.56 keeps me shooting 7.62X39

Though there is talk of IMI USA making a Galil here in the US of A

I might convert/buy a saiga .223 or something similar down the line, but I will always prefer 7.62x39.

I've been debating whether to try a trade for my bone-stock SAIGA 16" 7.62 gun for a 5.56 version of same as I haven't had a 5.56 AK for a lonnnnnnnnng time.
It's just that mine is an early RAAC import - without the ugly grind-out - and with dimples and ducksfoot, so I am a little reluctant to even bother.

going to be selling the norinco to get an SLR106ur and standardize mags

I think the mag situation and people using the wrong mags has caused alot of the 5.56 AK negativity

The whole appeal (only real appeal) of the AK is the fact that it can feed the 7.62x39 round because that's what it was born to do. I'll take the AR ergos any day.

Still sitting on a pile of 7.62x39 ammo after a failed AR upper in that caliber.
