Does anybody make an early style Ak74 with laminated wood ala the Soviet Army in Afghanistan in the early 1980s? I appreciate any help. I am familiar with the 74, but I haven't had any luck finding this sort of critter right out of the box.

Thanks!

No one that I Know of makes a copy of a Russian 74, you will probabky have to build a clone from a bulgarian kit. Maybe you can find the image your looking for here. There was a guy selling early Russian 74 wood stock sets on the AK forum, that would be a start.

Also look for the SLR105, it's a near perfect example of the early 80's pattern AK74

Arsenal of Bulgaria AK's were built on Russian tooling and are often considered to be as good (or sometimes better) than Izhmash military guns. The Soviets continued evolutionary improvements in machinery and manufacturing details for the 74 but the Bulgarians stayed with what they had. Eventually the Soviets ended up with the AK74M but even as recently as the past few years Arsenal of Bulgaria was still building 80's pattern rifles with the SLR105, 106 and 107

SLR105's are pretty much the best of the Bulgarian rifles IMO, but a good builder on a nice Bulgarian kit can work magic too.

Another vote for the SLR105. Don't limit yourself. Plum and 74M are just as fun!

Who is the guy on the left? He seems to be in almost every picture I see from the Soviets in AFG.

I have no idea but I agree I see him in more than a few pics. There was a thread on some forum about him but I don't recall details.

Thank you all very much for your help! You trimmed a great deal of time off my search! Spaceba! (Sorry, I don't have this machine set up for Cyrillic)

+1 on the Bulgarian SLR-105 being a sweet factory built AK-74. Here's my SLR-105A1R, along with my SGL-31, both dressed in traditional clothing.

that might be what you want.

The best you can do is track down a 83 izzy kit Rguns had them a while back but they are long gone.
