So a while back I picked up a Vepr 20" with the slant cut receiver. I also got a PSO scope. The details of the scope said it would mount on anything. Specifically listed Vepr. When I got it the scope it sat back WAY to far to use with the factory stock. I really want to keep it wood so I ordered an Ironwood stock thinking it would be longer. It isn't much longer, I also got a 1" butt pad on the way for it but the scope still sits back about 1-2" too far. I would like to keep this scope but I will change it if I have too. What options do I have to get the scope moved up? Are there longer side scope mount rails I could have switched out?

Did you get the "AK" or "SVD" version? I know there is a difference, but I'm not quite sure what it is.

and could you also post some pics, I'm also trying to figure out a scope for my 308.

On my converted .308 Saiga I use one of these and it locks up tight.  It also mounts on VEPR rifles according to the site linked.

I then ordered a Russian PO scope separately or you could use any commercial scope you prefer.  Since the mount and scope mount with separate rings it should be easy enough to get the proper eye relief you need.  You can also get the rings you prefer and the correct height you like.

I didn't buy from Kalinka optics as I used another vendor years ago that is no longer in business.

For a 7.62x54R caliber rifle there are probably separate scopes available for that round which use a mount as above.

The PSO scopes will sit kinda high on Veprs.  Tried a 6x on my 54r and was not happy. Look at the RS Regulate mounts.....

http://www.rsregulate.com/optics.php

Add a scope and rings and you should be able to mount it where it will be easier to use.

This s the scope I got for it: Kalinka Optics
It specifically says it's the AK version and it lists Vepr but I don't think that's accurate. Here's a few pictures.

I really like this scope and would prefer not to have to go with a different scope, but I may have to.

It is.  On the AK version, the clamp is flipped around so that the lever swings toward the rear to close/lock.  The AK version would have the same shitty eye relief, so it's kinda a moot point based on the OP's problem.

Sounds like a mount issue. I have a PSOP on my 54r VEPR and I have no issues, 2-3 moa, and that is with me being a mediocre shooter. Dumping the rubber eyepiece, yours seems to still be sitting two inches further back than mine.

The scope is mounted properly. The PSO 3-9 has a longer ocular due to the variable power.

So is the eye relief for the fixed pso usable for veprs/aks? or does that still sit too far back?

Looks like I'll probably have to go with a PSOP. One thing I really like about this scope is the height. I've seen those before on the Veprs. They sit a good 1/2" higher then the one I have.

I don't know about ordering from kalinkaoptics again though. I'm a little pissed at them for listing this scope as a good one for the Vepr.
Who else is a decent vender that sells these scopes?

It is.

Does anyone have any experience with this: kalinka mount
Wondering if that would work for this scope. It looks like it would move it up a little. I know this seems like a lot to go through for a scope but compared to the other scopes available this one is much nicer to me.

That's the MTK83 mount like the one shown here on Auzie's PO 1.5-4.5x. He painted it to better match the PO finish.

It will help some but not much...the reason is that the Vepr rail is a combination that can do SVD and AK mounts. The SVD will slide further forward than the AK mount will. You may end up in the same situation after you swap the mount.

This will be similar to the PO 3-9 on the Vepr

Unfortunately it appears that these variable power PO optics are not well suited for AK pattern receivers due to the longer occular. I can use my PO 3-9 on my SVD well enough - but without the eye piece. I've spent a lot of time behind the trigger with a PSO 4x24 and even for me I have to adjust to the PO 3-9 eye relief...it's just not as fluid or simple as the PO 4x24. They work but IMO only from the bench, I couldn't see myself shooting it dynamically like I've learned with the PSO-1

Yep, OP has the SVD mount/scope.  Get the AK.  The eye relief is non-existant in that one.  Also, Kalinka sucks to deal with.

The AK version of that scope will do nothing to solve the OP's issue.  Here is what the AK version of that scope looks like:

So, if the OP has SVD mount- shouldn't he go w/ POSP ( or PSO) w/ SVD mount then?-in stead of SVD mount on the receiver + AK scope mount.

What will be the recommended solution to this problem?  I have Vepr 308 and 7.62x54- I can use POSP 4x24 fine on both.  However, w/ higher magnification, I may have same problem w/ the OP.  Thinking about getting a PSO 2.5x18 but that probably has SVD scope mount on.

The scope with the conversion mount does look like it's forward more than with the mount I have. But it also raises is a bit too.  I have the Ironwood Designs SVD stock for the Vepr. Unfortunately it's the same length as the factory Vepr stock. I just e-mailed Matt and asked if he could either do an extended butt pad or a wood piece that would fit between the butt pad and the stock. I don't have high hopes for that though because I know he's still pretty busy with all the orders from the last Obama gun scare. I may end up selling this scope soon, but I really don't want to.

Anyone familiar with these scopes? more kalinka stuff What can you tell me about them? They look like the eye relief would be perfect.

not to sound stupid... but you could add length to the buttstock... maybe?

It's not the mount, it's the occular length of this particular scope. The PO 3-9x24 variable power has a longer occular than a the fixed PSO or POSP.

if you use an rs akog with an acog, you have a huge amount of eye relief options:

Vepr 7.62x54R (straight cut receiver) with NPZ mount and Weaver Super Slam 2-10x42 (EBX Reticle) with Burris XTR 1" low mount

what Zen says. +1000. You will have to go with a different scope to shorten the eye relief.

Good news. Got a email back from Matt at Ironwood Designs. He said send the stock back, he can make a spacer. Now I'm just trying g to figure out exactly what length I need.

I'm guessing g prone is the best position to go from. Any advise on this?
