105, without a doubt. I'm going to SBR one on a Rapid Fire kit myself in the near future. I already have the kit and the barrel. It's more "current".........more "high tech"...........more "modern technology"..............make sense? That's my take on it anyway.
 And speaking of Rapid Fire, they're out of 74 kits.......did they get them back in inventory yet??????

well i said AK-104 because you already got a 5.45 rifle,..
i got the same barrel from k-var,...i had a hell of a time trying to find a trunnion that would work with the barrel,...but eventually i got a romanian trunnion that looks like it will fit. im makeing a AK-104 sbr with the AK-100 series poly folding stock i got from ruseller. but i also have a krink kit on the way from k-var so when its all said and done i will have a sbr in 7.62x39 and 5.45x39 i had a rull size -47 i bought and a -74 i built so i figured a set of sbr's was in order. either way you go your going to have a nice ass rifle/carbine/sbr,..good luck |

I dont like the extended muzzle break/flash suppressors thats why I want to SBR it. Where can I get a good donor 74 kit for this project the kits at ORF are on backorder i might go an talk to them one of these days about them.

I vote 104.... I kinda like the Bulgarian midlength as well-

If I went with the 104 what kit should I use? I'm looking for a 5.45 kit right now but cant seem to find anything for a decent price.

5.45, just start with an Arsenal SLR105.. When your Form 1 is approved, install the Russian side folder, new Gas block, and chop the barrel. 104 you could simply wait for the Arsenal 7.62 stamped guns and do the same. |

I dont really have the ability to "chop" the barrel so the kit option would probably be easier. And id like to spend the money over time insted of all at once if i bought the arsenal i dont really have the money for that as of right now.

If you already have a 5.45, then go with the 7.62. If you have a 74M coming, and decide you like the shorter, you can always get it cut down later to match. Thats EXACTLY what I did. I had the 104 already. Got a 74M built up. Opted to go the matching pair route as posted above. You can always get it cut down later. Frankly I like the 100 series look and feel. Balances better. I think its the best overall AK size period, any caliber. Getting the form1 done ahead of time is a great idea. I need to get mine SBR'd. Heres a picture before I got it cut down. I highly recommend one of each. The bulgarian 4 piece FS beer can is a great muzzle device after you get it SBR'd. Until we get some SEI vortexs with the correct 24mm sight base! If you find a place to get a real AK100 cone, let me know. (this is the offical get BOTH response!)

The scary thing is, the only part left on his 105 from the original rifle is the reciever.

My friend Krazny is correct! Started off as the last batch of SAR2s imported for $289. Been completely reworked 3 times and touched up twice. Probably have over $2k in that gun alone after all that. Highly recommend figuring out what you want first, then making it happen the first time. Get your 74M cut down, and get the barrel now for the 104. Or maybe I want to be the only person with a 104 AND a 105....

I know Im sticking with the 74M for sure and Im pretty sure i want the 104 because the ammo is cheaper and its a different caliber and ive wanted a 7.62 ever since i sold my SAR-1.

I will have to get someone to host the pics, but sometime after next week, I will post pics of my SAR-3 that was sent to InRange to be converted into an AK-102. I couldnt find a Saiga .223 anywhere, and since I had this rifle, I decided to spruce it up a bit, and gathered all the prerequisite parts......it will look similar to Viper's 5.45 rifle, only with Bulgy waffles and Weigers.........and soon as Tantal has some more Polish 5.56 mags, it will sport those as well...

The 105 was scary accurate with zero adjustments. Like God ordained that it should be perfectly sighted in, straight from being built. The 104, needs a minor adjustment next time I have it out. Neither suffers for the shorter barrel length that I can see. Maybe if you benched it, but they are both AKs, and both are very accurate by AK standards. Bout as perfect as I can see.

Chopping the barrel would be 20x easier then installing the K-var short barrel.. Any local gunsmith can do the barrel, as oppossed to pressing in, headspacing the barrel, having to drill the slot for the barrel pin, etc. The SLR105s sell for what, about $500? The K-var barrel alone is almost $300. Not that much more... Just put some more money away, thats all.. |

if your gonna sbr somethang and spend that kinda cash on the kit buy a krink your paying 200 bucks so you can have a rifle thats like 2 inchs shorter than legal with the brake and dont tell me well i can take the brake off cause we all know you wont it would look stupid as hell without it

Hmm. The original poster is trying to decide between a -104 and -105; if he wanted a Krink, he probably would've said so. Having a -105 built using an SLR rifle or an AKS-74 kit as a base, would be several hundred dollars cheaper than ponying up for an (incomplete) AKS-74U kit from KVAR and having it built.
A more relevant comparison is how much shorter than a full-length AK-74 it is - and that's about 4 inches. Sometimes it doesn't take much to improve the handling and balance of a rifle. I personally see a huge improvement in going down to a 14.5" barrel on an AR, vs. a 16". |

I voted 104 since you already are getting the 74m.
I love the 100 series and plan to eventually have one of everything (101, 102, 103, 104, 105) PIC Well, no 107/108... The only problem I see as of now; how are you going to accomplish a 104, the only options right now is the Saiga and convert it or the hi-dollar barrel from K-var. Other than that you are going to have gas port issues. Awaiting Arsenal for the stamped 7.62; when is that happening? And are they planning 90* gas systems? |

Yeah I dont want a krink its too short for me and the parts kits are expensive and they always seem to be missing parts. I dont want a 5.45 and I dont want a yugo kit so that leaves me with a 104.

Look for one of the NON-A1 SLR105s with the neutered front sight base. It's going to be replaced anyway. |

Just got mine from him. some shipping wait. like 3 months+. and the hardware ships seperate from the stock.
But AK-100 for 158.00 after everything! Find one for less! And in the Us! Not happenin... I'm gonna buy 3 more sets. maybe more.

( Sigurd ) Thanks for the tip on the NoN-A1 SLR 105s, just picked one up on Gunbroker for $459 , I also need some help with locating the gas block and flash hider, and could you point me to a good smith for cutting the barrel down & installing the poly folding stock, Thanks for the help.

Kvar has the 24mm Bulgarian 74 brakes but are sold out of the FSB.... I luckly bought mine a while back and had my SLR105R converted over to the SLR105A1R but AKUSA...
The SLR105R looks gay with the non threaded FSB IMO...
