As the Zastava's get more windows for importation, the 5.56mm variants are starting to come in.   There appears to be a shortage of magazines that work with the Zastava's, and it seems that only one magazine comes with new rifles.   I had ordered up some 5.56mm Pro Mag's from Brownells expecting them to be an easy fit...I mean heck, it's just an AK mag for 5.56 right?  WRONG.   In looking at some info online, I believe that the Zastava Mags are copies of the Galil magazine.   Some photos for your perusal:

M21 (steel), Promag Plastic, Tapco 7.62.  You will notice right away that the promags bolt channel is shallower, and the latch tab is in a slightly different location.  we filed this down to fit, but ended up snapping a couple of tabs as it was too thin.

We took some plastic and epoxied it to the outside to get the magazine to fit in the well properly.  It was wiggling around without it.  You will note the metal tabs welded onto the side of the Zastava mag that fixes this issue.  The plastic spacer thing, sorta worked, but again, the bolt channel was too shallow, and the placement of the mag release tab was in a different location:

Pic of the the mag well openings between the M70, and the M21...identical

Finally a pic I got off the net of a Galil magazine....seems to me, that this might an exact fit for the 5.56 Zastava rifles...though I have to get one to try out.  Anyone out there give this a try yet?  I know a few members were talking about it but I've got no feedback on that thread:

I seem to remember reading that Galil mags will lock up and function for the most part in 556 yugos but they are loose and rattle around a bit.

Bulgarian 5.56 and Weiger mags are easily modified for the Yugos.
I have some Tromix modified mags for my Valmets that work perfectly in my M95....

I,too, have found the Bulgy mags to be good as well as the ProMags.  Both required some fitting but have been good performers.  I'd like to hear more about the Galil mags as well.
