Pics of the receiver markings and selector lever markings.  Anyone know how old this AK is?

A group pic of a few of the guns with the AK.

AK receiver marking and serial number.

Selector lever markings.

I think a quick look at that numbered trunnion is all that was needed.  It's kind of self-revealing.

Would that make it one of the first run AK's though?

The rifle is what's largely called a Russian "Type II."  It was the second fielded variation of the Kalashnikov (or fourth if you count the underfolder version).

I found a 1953-dated Russian Type II in Iraq several years ago:

Was there such a thing as a Type I?

Cool deal on the pics and info Rayman1.  I see one of the differences between type 1 and 2 is where the sling gets attached.  Type 2 is by the gas port and type 1 is the handguards.  Any other differences between the two?

Those are a few.  Basically, a lot is different with a Type I - different buttstock, handguards, gas tube, gas block, front sight base, top cover, pistol grip, piston, selector lever,...  Well, a bunch.
