Doesn't the USP use a double stack magazine? The HK45 is only slightly double stacked. Not quite double stacked but not single stacked either, IIRC. Hence the slightly less capacity.

Different mags, smaller grip.

It's built on a smaller frame (HK USP45c dimensions).  It's a two round advantage over my USP45c.

Someone will make a larger cap mag sooner or later.  The question is will a 3rd party mag manufacturer make a reliable mag for the HK45.

I called HK and asked them if they will be making and mags for the HK45 that will accept moar than 10 rounds....and they said NO.

Is the grip that much bigger on the USP? According to the HK website, the HK45C is both higher and wider than the full size USP 45, 5.59" high for the HK45C, 5.55" high for the full size USP45, 1.42" wide for the HK45C, 1.26" wide for the full size USP45.

Because an HK firearm is so perfect in its design only one shot is necessary and the other 9 rounds are simply for show.

Mine goes to 11.

HK45 mags do take 11, but you are over compressing the spring and that can lead to premature spring failure.  Don't bitch at HK when your 10 round mag that you have been loading 11 in to starts failing to lock the slide back after a while.

The answer is, Larry Vickers and Ken Hackathorn designed the gun to hold 10 rounds only.

Dug this out of archives from a post I made. The link is now gone.

Quoting Ken Hackathorn, on the HK45.

"Capacity of the .45ACP is an issue. The unreliability of high capacity .45ACP magazines when left loaded for months at a time has been one of the great weaknesses of the .45 caliber handgun. More than 10 rounds in a double stack .45ACP magazine has not been a good thing. How many rounds is enough? We came up with the ideal being 10 rounds, remember we wanted to make the grip size adaptable to those with less thn large hands."

The H&K was designed with an eye tward the military pistol trials, which specified a 10 round capicity. The M&P, Taurus, and FN pistols all have the same capicity, although the FN's grip can accept a higher capicity magazine. The M&P high cap .45 magazine sticks out of the grip to the point of ruining the lines of the pistol.

How hard is it to implement an extended floorplate w/ longer spring to prevent over-compression & increase rd count slightly?  Mag rd count alone doesn't determine reliability.

If HK believes double-stack .45 magazines are unreliable past 10 rounds why did  they make  HK .45 UMP submachine guns with 25 round mags?

How odd.  An expert on this board pronounced the M&P45 a complete failure because of it's 10 round magazine capacity.

And i always thought that spring compression over time didnt matter any more with modern day springs as long as they were not over compressed? Hmmm. either way. I would feel fine with a 10rnd 45 mag .

HK mag springs, in particular, have gained a reputation for kicking the bucket quicker than others. That being said, I've not had any issues with any of mine over the years. If/when I do I will upgrade to Wolff +10% springs and call it a day.

Oh, and for the record I'll keep my 2x4 USPf .45 with it's 12+1 capacity. It helps me sleep like a baby...
