That thing is pretty impressive.

I just got done building one of these last week. When it gets a good seal the potato will go about 150 yds. It runs on propane and is fired by a stun gun.

I *think* that those things are illegal or must be registered.  Might want to be careful.

Cool though.

The shooting of organic material is okay.  Spud guns, pumpkin chunking, etc...

The moment you start shooting concrete filled beer cans, ball bearings, billiar balls, etc... it becomes a crime.

No.  They don't.

Nope, spud guns are not firearms, no matter what the projectile.

I've made several, including ones purposely built to fire golfballs, paintballs, tennis balls, and blowgun darts.

I believe the BATFE FAQ list does mention "Flaming golfballs" are a no no.

I just checked the website (www.atf.gov) and the Firearms FAQ makes almost no mention of "potato guns" in it.  The only mention of them is a note about how to get a ruling on your design from the Firearms Technology Branch.

I thought as long as you didn't use "fixed ammunition" then you were OK as far as the BATFE was concerned?

Does anyone have a link to more information on this?  Are potatos as projectiles legal but tennis balls are not?

Before any ATF Agents start planning a raid, I don't have a cannon that shoots either one, I'm just curious as to the answers.

If you don't think a gun belching potatos 200 yards out the back door is entertaining to a bunch of drunks, you were never at one of my fraternity parties back in the day.

Hadn't thought about these in a while.  I might have to cobble one together with my daughters just to make sure the know how gets passed on to the next generation.

FWIW, we used to use aerosol engine starting spray and a gas BBQ grill striker as our propellant and ignition source.

Or at any of my family reunions... like the one just last year!

Where can one find the plans for that thing? Coolest spud gun setup I've ever seen.

attempting to understand that design...do you first charge the silver cylinder, then close the charging valve, then open the valve to let it into the combustion chamber??

a way of metering the charge??

second Q, why have the two stungun leads so far apart??? do they arc to eachother when that far apart?

Yes, you charge the silver piece of pipe to meter the amount of propane/mapp gas that goes into the combustion chamber. Mine is set up to run about 4% propane to air by volume.

The studs for the stun gun are far apart because it's set up so there are two arcs for better combustion.

There really isn't plans out there for it. You have to do some relatively simple calculations to figure out the length of pipe you need and what not. I don't think the plans are on the website for liability reasons. Probably  the hardest part is trying to put threads on a cut down Bernz-O-Matic nozzle and tapping the hole in the side of the combustion chamber for the 90 degree elbow to thread into.

This looks fun but dangerous as holy hell.  Has anyone calculated the pressures on that chamber?  I'd sure hate to get a face full of splintered PVC.

B17) How do I obtain a classification from ATF for my "potato gun?" [Back]

Any person desiring a classification of a “potato gun,” “spud gun” or similar device must submit a written request (not e-mail) to the Director and include a complete and accurate description of the device, the name and address of the manufacturer or importer, the purpose for which it is intended, and such photographs, diagrams, or drawings as may be necessary to make a classification. A final determination may require physical examination of the device. Such requests for classification should be submitted to: Bureau of ATF, Firearms Technology Branch
