We are compiling a date code reference for the Mossberg 500 series of guns. This information has never been in the public domain. We're going to fix that but we need your help.

Mossberg serial numbers are typically 7-characters. They have a letter prefix and then 6 numbers, like this: A123456 or Z654321. ALPHA comes before BRAVO, and 100000 comes before 900000. So far it looks like this:

• 500 / 590 / store brands all use standard sequence

• 535 have Alpha/year prefix - AT147xxx

• 835 have year/Mike prefix - UM509xxx

• Maverick 88 have Mike Victor prefix, 5 numbers, and letter suffix. Like this: MV12345 K

In order to complete this project we need the date of manufacture and serial number. We only need the letter and first 3 numbers. If you have this information please IM or email me. Mossberg will tell you the date of your gun if you contact them.

This is what we have so far. With your help we can get much better defined years. We are also working on specific years for rare/unusual models. This post will be updated as we gather data.

Two of my 500s dated by mossberg a few years ago.

I emailed them with my S/N, I'll post up when they respond.  Gun was bought around 2010, the s/n is T676xxx.  That seems to coincide with a couple of previous entries.

I've emailed. The serial is P347611, I've had it since the mid to late 90s (probably 97 or so)
