New to PCs, but will be getting one.  Still in the researching phase.  What color's or camp schemes would you (blah) would you suggest for Western VA/ Eastern TN?

:edit for more info:  PC would be used for SHTF type scenario.  Traveling from one location to a safer one.  Driving, I suppose color wouldn't matter.  But, like all of my planning, Lets say worst case.  Maybe a week or 2 trek.  Most land scape is similar between SW VA and NE/SE TN.  Some true green and darker greens.

Multicam or Kryptek Mandrake.  Multicam is better for multi environments but Kryptek is better for the type of woods there.  When I lived in Bristol on the VA/TN border the Kryptek Mandrake makes you disappear in all the greens.

Thank you!  I hate the multicam, so I am glad there is a suitable alternative.

I'm in SE MI, and the color schemes are fairly similar to your neck of the woods. I use MARPAT Woodland in the summer and Multicam for spring and fall or less-forested terrain.

What if I wanted to go with a solid color?  Which would be better fitting?  OD or Ranger?  Seems to me that Ranger might be too bright.  Sorry if I sound like a total noob.  I'm used to hunting camp mainly.

OD but solid colors tend to stand out more on big things like PCs and people.

Ranger Green is a versatile color in that it can look to be more green, brown, or gray depending on the angle/lighting because it's a muted color.

OD, to me at least, just looks like a bold green.

Those must be lightweight!

I thought mine were light at 6.7# each. I bet the PC is another 3-4#...

My buddy I got them off of said they were 5.5 each. My scale weighed them closer to 7. Either way, still plenty light for level IV, especially for full cut. One of these days I'm going to replace the front full cut for a swimmer/shooter cut front.

Maybe this is a dumb question but........

I'm looking and finally purchasing a plate carrier.  I already have a war belt in black but after looking at every ones picture I don't think I saw 1 plate carrier in black.  Is there any reason for this?  I live in an urban area and always figured black would be the way to go but maybe I should switch to multicam instead.

Any info is greatly appreciated.

As previously mentioned, black is a horrible choice for just about anything. Take a look outside and see how many objects are truly black. Not many. Black sticks out in the daytime and night time. Law enforcement use black for one reason: to look intimidating, and blending in to anything is not part of that strategy.

Once I found out I can remove the female SwiftClip buckles on my Mayflower APC without cutting them off (they have "repair" slots), I removed them and reinstalled the LBT mag insert into the front kangaroo pouch.  It was a tight fit initially, but has loosened up a bit and formed around the mags with use.  It keeps the front of the PC relatively flat and does not collapse completely flat when I pull the mags, making reinsertion of the mags a relatively smooth affair.

This is a great setup- three mags on the chest with no impact on profile, nothing to catch on sling, nothing to make prone positions more difficult-- It's how I chose to go.  I don't have any pouches as you do, next to the mags on the PC, as I find stuff in those spots awkward-- but as we always say, to each his own.

It's the JPC radio pouch made and sold by Crye Precision, attaches under c-bun flap using velcro just like you said. I like it because it gives me the option to quickly pull it off or slap it on depending on my need for comms. Pouches come as a left/right side pair so I was thinking about stuffing some more med supplies in the opposite one. Also, these Alpha Touch gloves are the greatest thing since sliced bread. I definitely need to stock up on them before anymore train derailments.

Outside Dept. Policy the best solid colors would be: Brown > Green > Black.

Thank you.  I know what you mean about the pouches.  I don't like any pouches under my arms because it makes me walk around like The Rock.  Where I have the pouches now, with the way the PC fits me they stick out at 45 degree angles in front of my arms and pretty much stay out of my way.  I've been switching out the med pouch between the ATS, an Emdom AK/M4 pouch with the ATS med insert, and a Fire Force double M4 pouch with the contents of my BOK in a Ziploc bag.

So I just got my Banshee + AR500 assembled.  Have a few nick-nacks to add but this is the layout.  Spent three hours in it, climbing on the jungle gym, mowed the grass, rifle drills, wrestling with my son.  Not as bad as I was afraid it would be.

I think people are starting to figure out the mentality of "why be slower, heavier and less effective if I don't have to".  I think being good is finally starting to be cooler than looking like you're invading Fallujah.

Meh I've been doing it for years.  So, I agree wholeheartedly.

from my website

While gear is not as important as skills or tactics it is frequently a topic for concern for the citizen soldier.  People want to spend money and get quality gear.  On the other hand it is possible to overspend and get the wrong gear or miss-prioritize and not have the gear you need.  How much you can spend on gear is something only you know, and how much you SHOULD spend on gear is something you need to decide.  It is possible (even popular) to dress up like a soldier patrolling the streets of Bagdad, but this doesn’t make you that effective.  Your role is different, your resources are different and your goals are different.  I see pics of people on the internet expecting to carry 12 magazines, two pistols, armor, spare “uniforms” and NBC  gear into combat.  This immediately marks them as someone who has never really done any training.  I prefer to take a minimalist “VC” like approach to combat gear, albeit with more modern stuff.  This is cheaper, easier to get in to and fits our tactical concept (i.e. hit fast and run away.)

The only thing my PC needs is another CAT and a MOLLE multitool pouch

Nice!

I like the internal mag pouch now that I added kywi inserts.

You make me want a coyote one to complete the collection.

I'm gonna have to try that. Not too fond of the bungees.

Any idea what the small black velcro tabs were for?

No clue.

What I did was stitch up the top of the internal pouches and bought 3 kywi inserts. My sewing sucks but this the general idea. Works great for me.

I only wish I could make the range green one work like that for 762 mags.

The velcro coins are intended to be placed on magazines for added retention.

damn well said.

Unless your going to the multicam forest, or the marpat jungle, a man crouched in camo looks just like a man crouched in camo,  no 'pattern' is ever going to be able to drastically alter that. lots of training and good fieldcraft is the only thing that will make a difference.

My girlfriend's dad used to be a HAM (and a SAR volunteer in his county team) and he does have a scanner/receiver that is about the size of a handheld radio, is why I brought up the possibility.

Otherwise I was kind of agreeing with the "why do you have it unless you have someone to talk to with it?" idea.

Yeah, but I think his point is that if you don't have comm plans already worked out (and a buddy with a compatible radio in his gear) it's still dead weight, even if it is small.

Conversely, if you have an actual use for it (e.g. it can scan your local LE/EMS/Fire dispatch bands and/or NOAA-NWS weather bands in addition to being a handy-talkie) then rock on with yo' bad self

What radios usually do that?

after 2001 a lot of people were given access to either WPS or a GETS calling card.

Just speaking for myself, the way I see it in the time between I get onto a radio with the people with whom I need to communicate with, it will likely be past the point of initial panic and chaos, since there will be some form of staging already underway. To be honest a phone call is probably going to be the best and only way to communicate with the people that anyone is going to want to talk to immediately anyway.
