I'm keeping my PC load pretty minimal (right now just 4 rifle mags and a bleeder kit).  But I do think a small knife would come in handy.  Is there a "go-to" option right now for this?

Bought an ESEE 3 MIL during a holiday sale...it's a good knife but for about $100, I was a little underwhelmed. Just got a Becker "Necker" BK11 for about $30...I love it! Blade is basically the same size as the ESEE 3 and sharp as a razor. I got a deal on the optional grips but normally they are ridiculously priced (more than the knife). I would wrap it with paracord. Rather than bother with any sort of molle adapters, I just lash it to my vest with paracord. Handy little bugger.

knife for what purpose?

Cold steel dagger for one last ditch effort - "get off me" tool
leatherman for tasks
ESEE 3 or 4 for bigger tasks (not fighting)

Mostly reason 1 with a little bit of reason 2.  I have a multitool and a Microtech Curahee on the belt, but something small mounted up high would be easier to get to if seated or in a big hurry.

I think I have one of these floating around in my gear bins:

If I can dig it up I may give it a go.

This or a Multi tool is how I roll

Mostly a multi tool cause I'm to chicken to try and stab someone. And they are far more useful. I always have a benchmade folder on me. So adding another knife is just redundant.

Do you carry that next to your shotgun scabbard on your back? That would seem to be the only way to go.

OP: I just have a folder (Columbia River Drifter) clipped to my pants pocket. Actually, I have a Gerber folder in an admin pouch.

I would recommend having at least a multitool.

More weight and space on a vest.

Folder in my pocket. Sog trident

I want a fixed blade but it would need to go on my pistol belt, preferably horizontal. I need the knife if I have to drop my vest for some reason.

I carry a Gerber Guardian back up boot knife on the left side of my FLC, a K-bar on the right side of my belt and a multi tool on the left side of my belt along with a CRKT folder in my right BDU pocket.  I carry multiple versions in various locations in an effort to have access to an edged weapon regardless of the position I may find myself in. Experiment until you find what works for you and your intended use(s).

Anything bigger than an ESEE3 is just going to be a pain in the ass. It's just an extra things for radio cables, slings, and other shit to get hung up on. Realistically, a multitool is going to get a lot more use.

That being said.. if you are at the point where you need to pull a knife out in a hurry, your day obviously isn't going so well, and you are probably better off throwing your weight around than trying to stick somebody. Shears do a better job for cutting straps away, and unless you are super anal about keeping your knife sharp, the shears will be more effective.

Your other concern is, when you are rolling around in the dirt, the last thing you want to do is give somebody an extra tool to stick you with. The knife looks cool, but it would not look too cool to be stuck with your own knife.

They're obviously trying to sell a product, but at least they mention it. There will be a MMA ninja along shortly to correct me I'm sure, but If you are getting rushed, you're giving up an arm, wasting time and energy digging for a semi concealed knife. If the dude is pissed off enough to put hands on you, he's not going to stop the second he gets stabbed, and you're still going to have to continue to work him off of you.

We did quite a bit of "get in a circle and pick somebody to fight" type pt in the army. I personally had zero experience wrestling or any formal fighting, and it's definitely an eye opener to see what you can and can't do with a slung weapon, a helmet, and some heavy plates when you get blindsided. I definitely would not suggest wearing anything sharp and stabby, even if it looked cool.

The Becker BK14 is an ESEE and Kabar collaboration. ESEE actually had design input on this blade and is very similar to the Izula at an affordable price. Even has the ESEE stamp:

The sheath that comes with the blade needs to be replaced, as the sheath is glass reinforced. Reports of sheathing actually dulling the blade after repeated use so replace Kydex and Leather and you're gtg.

I have a SOG NW Ranger 2.0 knife on my plate carrier for "do it all" tasks. I prefer the black TiNi blade, but you can more readily find the satin blade and for much cheaper also. The knives come with a leather sheath so I had a Kydex one made with Molle attachments.

Link to the Black TiNi model on Amazon. I got mine for around $60, but I believe SOG has stopped making the black TiNi model and only makes the satin blade models now.

If I may have an opinion on this?

Better to get a utility knife and be done with it. Fighting knives.. meh. I've been in a few hundred traumas, those people who are victims of blunt force to the head (beer bottles, bats, curbs) are often much worse off then those who sustain multiple stab wounds. We've had people come in with multiple stab wounds to the chest and abdomen and the knife still stuck in them talking to us. Hit by bat, not so much going on.

Moral of the story: pick up a rock vs go to a knife. Use utility knife for cooking/cutting/whatever.

When you slip off a roof or down a ditch, where is the folder in your back pocket going to end up? Also let us know how the "knif" in your boot is feeling around about mile 5 of .. whenever you can stop walking.

Me too, but with the 1st-line belt and a plate carrier on, getting anything out of my pants pocket, especially in a hurry, is going to be a comical sight.

Been there done that, have it to the outside of your cheek no problem. As far as boots 5.11 atac, using those since '09. It is what works for me.

I finally found the Ka-Bar Large TDI.  It's too big for what I was looking for (took up basically the whole top section of the PC), and the sheath is total shit.  The knife itself is pretty nice though... very sturdy construction and the blade shape seems like it would lend itself very intuitively to defensive use... I'll find some use for it.

I'll probably just go ahead and pick up one of the SOC-Ps from Benchmade.

I have one. It's on my Eagle PC at the moment. They rock. Get the trainer though so you can practice. The SOCP is good for creating some distance so you can draw your handgun. It's not a traditional fighting knife, but it's realisticly much more practical than carrying a conventional fighting knife if your sole purpose for doing so is defense.
