Ok, I am looking for a machinegun that i will be able to do lots of fun modifications to (legal of course).  I have settled on either a mac10 or 11.  I want something that has lots of different uppers and accessories that i can use.  I have heard of this up and coming lage 22lr upper, is that for the 10 or 11??  I have seen various uppers that even have AR handguards and the such on them at different gun shows.  Any suggestions on which (the 10 or 11) would probably give me more options and versatility in the long run?  Thanks for any opinions.

The M11/9 is more versatile.

M11/9 has more available options right now and seem to be more on the way...  Max-11.com will also show you the Lage .22 upper that's still in testing...

The M-11/9 is to the Class 3 world what the AR-15 is to the semi-rifle world...

It's the most versatile and affordable (that's the only thing that knocks the M16 out - the damn price) MG you can get, in terms of uppers, stocks, etc...

Every time you look, there's a new upper, or part out... Although the ATF has played fast-and-loose with the rules when folks try to make belt-fed uppers for them, some DO exist in circulation (I seem to remember a RPD upper - it cost more than the MAC itself)...

The only advantage the M10 has over the 11 is that if you're a .45ACP fan, the M10 fires said caliber...

Although I wouldn't put it past someone to make a M-3 grease-gun upper for the M-11... After all, they made a Soumi 9mm upper to convert the M-11A1 from 380 to 9mm (said upper features a separate magwell, takes drums & sticks)...

Ok, i'm pretty much sold on scoring a mac-11.  Where is the best place to find such a gun in new/like new condition.  I see impact has them for sale as New in box, is that for real?  Again, thanks for the suggestions and keep them coming...  Good day all.

I've got a MAC10/9 and love it but there is very little in the way of options for them. Tey are a little slower firing and heavier than the MAC11s so they are a bit more controlable.

If you find a good deal on a NIB, then go ahead. However, do not pay a premium for NIB... most NIB guns have sat in their box for 20 years and may still need attention (new buffer, possibly other troubleshooting) as many were thrown together to beat the May 86 deadline. As you are likely to discard many of the factory parts anyway, then even a well used gun is OK if the price is right.

I bought a used gun and promptly discarded the factory upper in favor of the MAX-11. I also replaced all of the crappy factory FCG parts with West Georgia Armory parts. Here is the result :

Yup - cool as shit indeed . Shoots GREAT too - I built it for subgun competition. ROF is right around 650rpm, which is perfect. In my first major match (2006 AZ Subgun Match) I took second place, beating many MP5s, Uzis and M16s... the one guy who beat me to take first place was Richard Lage, also shooting a MAX-11 !

M-11:  Lage Slow fire upper, lots of mags available, endles configarations available from the orignal bullet hose, TASK SF conversion and the Lage SFU.

M-10- .45 acp:  Lage SFU coming out in January (I'm #2 on the list).  Plenty of options, uses Grease Gun mags, can be configured are the bullet hose it originally was and as a greasegun SMG with the Lage MAX-10 upper.

M-10 9mm:  Lage SFU coming, hard to find mags.

Either is a fine SMG.  pick your caliber and make your choice.

The M-10 is rumored to be better built due to heavier gauge of steel being used.

STG.com and subguns.com, and gunsamerica.com are the best places to look (in that order)..

You can still get a used gun for under $3k there...

There have been several $2750-2850 sales recently (including the one I'm getting)
