I was recently asking my gunsmith about what kind of bipod to use for the .50 BMG and mentioned Harris bipods as one option, but they scoffed at that and talked about how easily bipods snap or rip out of the mountings after so many shots. Then some odd suggestions were made, and I decided I'd go ahead and ask ARFCOM what kind of bipod setup is appropriate.

Go to State Arms' website.  I have one of their bipods and IT. IS. BURLY.

The Atlas BT10-LW17 is nice (certainly not cheap) - but you might need to have someone who is LEO or military to get one for you.  The quality is first class all the way.

I've used a Harris on a 50lb gun. An M60 bipod had broken on the same rifle. The Harris has some give, so as long as you don't let it collapse under recoil it is good to go. If using a fixed bipod it needs to be built very strongly.

Many use the Armalite/APA for the AR50

I saved some cash and got the Shots Gunsmithing version (HEAVY DUTY but doesn't fold)

My friend's AR50 has the Armalite on it. Heavy duty as hell.

A Harris will work in a pinch. Put it on backwards so it doesn't fold in recoil.

Which .50? That should help give us a clue.

Sorry it took so very long to get the answer on this. We just got our action delivered and paid the taxes, and are ordering the trigger.
It's still being assembled but its a LH bolt action repeater, and we are going to try to get Lilja to do a 33" barrel in target taper stainless steel.
The stock (and action) are McMillan - I believe we went with Big Mac, but the trigger (Jewell) is 5 weeks and the barrel is 16 weeks.

personally, I'd like a bipod strong enough to stand on and kick a few times. I have no idea how much this thing is going to weigh,

I am grateful for the advice people have provided so far, and looked at a couple of versions of an Armalite bipod and visited the Atlas page.
We have a Harris on the Lapua. I kind of need to know what bipod to mount before the stock is ordered.

I've had a Harris bipod on my 50 for over 10 years. Never had a problem with it. They come standard on the LAR.

ok, so I talked with the gunsmith again, and we talked about sling mounts vs. picatinny vs. forward stud or whatever these options are called. When I mentioned picatinny he didn't sound very enthusiastic at all. Here's three links to explain wth I'm talking about:

image A: sling mount stud

Image B: Picatinny

Image C: Forward Stud Thing

Then there's this thing, I don't know what it is.
Image D: Possible Variant of C

I'd prefer something that looks like an Atlas with a solid mount as far forward as possible, my barrel plus break is going to exceed 36".

Take a look at Long Rangy Accuracy bipod.  Not cheap but worked great on my AR50.

I am new to the fifty game as well, but it seems everyone is out of the APA Bipods. Does anyone know who has these in stock?
