I can't find any 335 locally so I've had to change up a little for my. 223. I picked up some Varget today at Cabelas. How do you all like Varget compared to H335?

a lot of people love it in 308.  i guess does well in the heavier 223.  doesnt measure well at all.  get close with ur powder measure and trickle the rest.  it smells like formalgahide when u open it lol.

Well crap, all I load for is 55gr right now. Is it only ideal for the heavier bullets?

If you are only loading 55gr I would use H335

I hate when people just make s**t up.
I consulted Hornady and Sierra.

Sierra max
H335 25.7gr 3000ft/s
Varget 27.2gr 3000 ft/s

Hornady max
H335 23.2gr 3100ft/s
Varget 26.4gr 3200 ft/s

Varget works just fine.

I like it as far as powder goes, but it sucks in a progressive.  I use it mostly for .308.

There is a big difference between it working and being an ideal powder.

Varget is better suited for heavier bullets while H335 is better suited for lighter bullets.  You will also probably find that those max load you listed are compressed with Varget and aren't with H335.

Varget also doesn't meter work a crap.....I know I have many, many pounds of it.

ETA: I have settled on TAC for my .223 55gr+ loading needs and Varget for my .308 155gr+ loading needs and have stocked up on each.

I only shoot 55gr bullets in .223 and I've used Varget and H335..

Varget doesn't meter worth a crap, You will get huge variation in powder drops,  however It didn't seem to make much difference if any in the accuracy,  H335 meters wonderfully, but isn't as accurate..

I have 16 lbs of H335 to use up, then I'm gonna try TAC.

Don't you hate it when that happens?

There's other powders I'd rather use but have settled for "good enough" stuff I can get locally when I need it.

Your cabela's should carry Ramshot TAC, 8208 XBR or BLC-2, I know mine does, probably be better off with one of those instead.  Varget will work but you're going to have to weigh each charge, unless you don't care, but your drops could vary by as much as .2 or .3

Hmmm will they take returns on unopened powder I wonder?  I bought it at another Cabelas because I was traveling and knew that mine didn't have 335.  I may try to return it and get some TAC if they've got it instead.

I like Varget in .223 as well as my .308. You might also check into using Benchmark. It meters a lot better than Varget.

I don't know of any place that will take returns on powder or primers. Liability and that.

u didnt make the worst mistake in the world.  go for.  see what u get, post the results.  thats teh fun of trying powders.  sometimes u r forced to get out of the rut.  i have used h335 in a 1in9 with a 68gr with amazing results.

cant wait for the pics

I've had good luck with varget over 50gr and 55gr vmax bullets in my 1 in 9 20" and 60gr vmax in my 1x8 18".

I love varget in 223 55grain zmax 26.5 grain and never look back. good velocity and even better accuracy. I only have varget (until this friday) for 223 because it works good for the lighter bullets and only gets better as the weight goes up. Also It is a great choice powder for 308 168-178 grain bullets love varget. And I dont know what presses people are using that it does not meter well in but it meters great for me (+/ .1 grain.) Im using a hornady lock and load AP.

I use Varget for my M193 loads... in most cases its not a compressed load (I do 26grains) and I guess I am lucky since I dont have issues with weight variation or feeding issues too.

Big +1.  I use both of these for 55 grain .223's.  The Varget also gets used for .30-cal.

I use Varget for my 308, but H335 for my 223.  Have never tried Varget for my 223 loads, but H335 seems to work great...

I just finished working up a load with both varget and H335 with 55g Z-Max

Rifle is a RRA 16" middy 1n9

These where my results with H335 from a workup last week
4 shots per group
100 yards
67 degrees
10-15 mph 2 o'clock wind
FC once fired brass
CCI BR4 primers
Z-max 55g pill
COL 2.250

and this is my Varget workup
5 shots per group
100 yards
75 degrees
8-12 mph cross wind
FC once fired brass
CCI BR4 primers
Z-max 55g pill
COL 2.235

This was a mixed brass shot. The three on the left where FC and the two on the right are LC. I dident notice i had the LC brass until i loaded them in the mag and shot the LC last

I had a few extra 27.8 loads and tested them on some turtles at a little past 300 yards. 6 shots and 6 deceased turtles
I wasn't able to recover any of the remains to see the damage, but on 4 of them parts rained down on the water for a good 4 seconds

Im going to leave the H335 for FMJ plinking rounds, and work up the rest of the Z-Max's with 27.5 grs of Varget
I did not see any pressure signs at 27.8, and would have gone higher but the case is completely full of powder at 27.8

Varget is a little slower burning than H335.  It is more suited for the heavier weight bullets in the 5.56 / .223 series.  However, in the quest to limit my powder inventory, I have used Varget to power 55 grain FMJBT w/c Hornady bullets, up to 3100 FPS out of a 20" bbl AR, to my satisfaction.

I loaded 22-250 with 34 gr. dogtown bullets and varget, It loved the varget.
I am shooting 50gr. Z-Max with 27.0gr varget in my .223 most accurate load for my AR

I started messing with it today finally.  I don't like it compared to 335 I guess just because of how full it fills the case.  As I load I look into the cases to ensure the powder dropped and some of them look really full at only 25gr so I get paranoid and pull it out and weigh it.  They've actually all been nearly right on though,

I'm just not used to it because it's so case filling I suppose.  I'm using a Hornady LNL-AP and so far it hasn't been throwing too bad.

I like Varget but when using heavy bullets it gets compressed.  Generally this is fine unless your loading bullets with a thin jacket on the nose.  I used Varget with 68gr Hirnady match bullets and the seater plug from my RCBS die cause a ring around the nose of the bullet from seating.

I wouldn't return the Varget, it's a great powder, it just takes a little bit more work to use.
