I finally got to pick up my first (but hopefully not last) SBR, its an LWRC PSD in 5.56.

im already had my T1 and VFG ready for it but now im looking for a light and would like some ideas/recommendations.

On my 16' ARs i use a full size scout light as I like the output and it has good throw, but on a SBR i dont think I need something with as much throw as I wouldnt be using it to engage targets beyond 100 yds in a HD role, and I find it a bit large for this rifle.

I also dont really like mounting lights at 3 or 9 o'clock as i feel it adds too much width to the rifle. i tried mounting an X300 at 6 o'clock but it rendered the VFG useless.

I then mounted it at 12 o'clock but I cant use my BUIS with it at 12 o'clock.

Im thinking about trying one of the Hailey Thorntail light mounts at 10:30 for the scout, but before I spend the money on one Id like some input if theres anything else I should try or anything im overlooking with that setup?

The thing I like about the scout is the ability to partially press down the tailcap switch with my support hand thumb for momentary on, which I find a little tricky with the X300 as I find myself hitting the switch to constant on due to my thumb aplying pressure from the side.

any input and pics would be greatly appreciated !!

Id never thought about placing the BUIS behind the light.

Does the reduced sight radius effect the accuracy at all ?

You have a T1, so you're rarely, if ever, going to use the BUIS.  Even if you do, they'll be adequate.

BUIS is generally for when the primary optic is down and you NEED to get shots off.  If you're at the range and your primary goes down, go home and fix your rifle.

At that point anything is better than nothing.

This thread is relevant to my interests.

Got my Noveske 8" 300BLK in.  I want a light on it for HD use (will mount a T1 when I can), but I'm concerned about weight.  I've got an SDN-6 for it and that already makes it tip-heavy, so I want something a) unobtrusive, b) light weight, and c) IR capable if possible.

Funny I have the same upper and suppressor to put on my PSD lower. Do you have the NSR rail on it ?

I dont mind the weigt so much as Im worried about the ergonomics.

This is purely my opinion, but SBRs are not designed for long range shooting (not saying it can't be used for that, but its primary purpose is CQB), so the slightly reduced sight radius won't be an issue at close range.

I like where that mount puts the light.  Could you tell me who makes that mount ? Is it metal or plastic ? And how is the interface with the scout ?

Anybody use the Thorntail SBR?

I'm sorry for being behind on weapon lights these days, but can you tell me what make & model light is on your gun? I've got a 300blk pistol build i just completed (waiting on my stamp for SBR).  I would really like to add a compact weapon light & compact optic for it.  I have seen pics of your light on other arfcommers guns often wondered what it was.  Do you like it?  Where did you get it?

Sorry for getting off-topic!

Thanks

It's an inforce weapon mount light with a momentarily switch.  It's about 110 online.  It's takes one cr123 battery and super bright.  The 12oclock position lets me manipulate the light from either shooting side.  Great light and a lot cheaper than the others.  Highly suggested!!

Thats nice I think Im going to have to give that a try on my SBR.

The mini scout is the perfect size, and I dont think ill ever be shooting anything passed 50 yards with my SBR in the dark.

Ill probably wait till after SHOT though to see if they release a 200 luemen mini scout like the they did with the EB1 backup.

Thanks guys for all the input.

Some of the pics show the front end of the light in close proximity to the muzzle, which is frequently seen with SBR.  I use a break (BattleComp) and I'm thinking of placing a SF Scout near the muzzle as well.  Has anyone noticed damage to the light from such a position?

Nice looking setup. Have you shot much with the G2X attached? I've been debating getting one, but have read a few users have issues with them as weapon lights.

I have yet to shoot with this config, but I run 6p defenders on my other AR's with no issue.  Have you heard something with the G2 specifically?

I had read some product reviews about them not holding up to being on weapons for very long and when they would start malfunctioning, surefire refused to cover it under warranty due to them not being made for weapon mounting. At the same time, a friend of mine has been running one on his 16" for over a year with no problems. I also saw a Pat Rogers carbine DVD that I got for free from BCM and he was mentioning that he runs the exact same light on his rifles with no problems. I plan on ordering a couple for myself, but have not decided on a mount yet.

I am having trouble figuring out what makes the Thorntail SBR ideal for SBRs as compared to going with a Larue mount. I see that it is made for setups with 2 inches or less of exposed barrel between muzzle and rail. Can someone explain that to me? Forgive my weapon light ignorance.

7.5 sbr with a kx3 muzzle brake under a Troy trx rail.  The trx rail has to be installed first then add kx3.  The kx3 has to be strapped wretched down as trx rail has thicker portions of the rail in the middle to absorb heat and the kx3 won't fit if not installed last.  Dbal i2 ir laser, inforce wm light, magpul buis, sopmod stock, ergo grip and squid grip not shown, heavy buffer tube and lmt enhanced auto bcg.   Did several classes with it and shoots awesome!! Shoots 55 grain fine and eats up 77 grain rounds.  Rail doesn't heat up to much either.

We all have carbines with lights, optics and rails that make the guns 10LB heavy weights, so my Idea of a SBR was to keep it simple and as light as possible.

This has a 11.5 inch barrel (so the suppressor won't get destroyed by the gas cutting), the plastic hand guard in lighter than a rail and a simple mini aimpoint because my eyes are getting older. Bad levers don't weigh much and a rear buis cause I think they are cool. That's it.

The Matech BUIS is 3.4 ounces
Sometimes I use a TRL-1, only 4 ounces.  Add the 1.5 ounces that my KAC 300m micro weighs and your only 2 ounces lighter.
