How do you like it.  I picked it up at the local fun shop and it felt pretty good, the only negative that I picked up was the mag is pretty loose in the mag well.  What are your thoughts. Looks so fun though.

I've been retraining myself with iron sights, I've cheated to long with scopes.  But when I get better groups at 100 yards I'll get some long eye relief scopes for both.

I haven't had any feeding or functioning problems with mine.  The only problem I have with the mags are the prices.  I bought a fiver for hunting and I'm going to try it out today.

Very nice job on the side sling attachments!!!

Where did you get the rear attachment at?
Also, do you have a better picture of wat you did for the front sling swivel?

That is off an H&K G3.

http://www.robertrtg.com/g3woodbuttstock.html

I used the rear sling swivel off a M1903 Springfield for the front sling mount... I mounted it to the side and it was a little tricky to get it inlet good.

I wanted something very strong that would work well when carrying it on my back...

May be a dumb question, but do these rifles take M14 magazines?
Link Posted: 11/14/2011 9:29:00 PM EDT
[#18]
They use Accuracy International "AI" pattern magazines. AI mags generally have less variation in tolerances from mfg to mfg and tend to function more reliably than M14 mags and all their legions of fabricators.

Stainless barreled action, walnut stock.  The receiver is marked, but there is no logo on the grip cap.  Everything else is standard GSR.  Cabelas exclusive at $899.95 MSRP and $809.95 employee pricing.

Here is mine.

XS rail with back up peep sight.
Extra sling swivel added for Ching sling. (I made my own Ching sling from an extra Giles sling I wasn't using, still  a little fitting to finish on the sling)
Standard metal 10rd mag but I now have the new polymer 5rd and 10rd mags I like just as much.
Gemtech Sandstorm Suppressor
Top Photo is with Leupold Mark 2 4x12x40 traditional scope.
Bottom photo is with Leupold 2.5X Scout scope.

I think I am leaning towards the traditional scope set up over the Scout scope. (have several other scout rifles set up already, and I still can use the open sights which I really like if I want to go lower power)
I haven't fired a shot yet but hope to in the next few weekends weather permitting.

Lgunsmoker: do the irons work with the suppressor on?

I'm thinking seriously about adding a can to mine.  I have a subsonic load with a 220 grain cast bullet that shoots very well in my GSR.

I'm now using the new polymer mags.

Iron sights should work fine with a suppressor.  Here is mine with a 1.5" diameter suppressor which most 308 suppressors seem to be anyway.
Plenty of clearnace with the front sight post.  You don't really even notice the suppressor when looking through the sights.

Be sure to have your threads check out when you get a suppressor.  My threads were concentric but the threads did not go all the way to the shoulder so my suppressor did not seat squarely. My local gunsmith machined in a relief and all is good to go now.  A suppressor that mounts on a flash hider probably would have been fine if a crush washer was used.

Hope that helps.

I read an article in Field and Stream that the rifle liked only specific loads and wasn't accurate past 200 yards. What have your experiences been with loadings, accuracy and distance.

I've been thinking about one for a truck rifle. Currently have a Ishapore Carbine as my truck rifle but not happy with grouping and accuracy at 300 yards with iron sights.

Got a link to the article..? I have found it very accurate out to 200 but have not yet shot it past that...

There's no cowitness through it - still to high for the stock irons.  It's not so high, though, that it's uncomfortable - plenty low enough that you can use a normal cheekweld.  Shot it again today for another 40 rounds, first 10 to check it at 100.  I'm happy with this at 100, through a red dot.  I pulled one of them, but I'm not one to call a flier - I don't even know which one of them it was in the first place.  The dot was taking up half this target at that distance, so I'm pretty damn happy with the rifle, and with the dot.

Just for info on this dot, it was on a 5.56 gun before this, with about 1k rounds through it.  That's not .308 Win recoil, but this thing isn't new, either.  I'll see how it does, and keep shooting it.

I know of two guys that are shooting them in Silhouette matches - the Rams are at 500 yards and shot offhand.  Earlier this month R came within 1 target of the top score with his GSR against a good turn out and most using rifles set up for the game.

I've not found mine to be finicky.  Here is a target I shot during load development using six different loads.

I shoot both jacketed and cast bullets in mine.  It seems to do best with Jacketed bullets when pushed at or near max published load data.  I've had good luck with Varget, IMR 4895, IMR 4064 and the best luck with IMR 3031 under 165 grain JSP bullets.  R, the guy doing well in the silhouette matches is shooting 150 grain bullets pushed with IMR 4895.  I've also seen some impressive groups using W748.

For cast bullet loads my favorites so far are:
-Lyman 311008 (115gr) over W231 pushed to 932 fps (avg).  Very accurate and great for low recoil/report plinking/vermin control/training loads.
-Lyman 311334 (190gr, spire point)  pushed to 1900 with SR 4759 , excellent for low cost repetitions, without barrel wear.
-Lyman 311284 (210 gr RN) makes an excellent subsonic load with W231 getting it just under 1,000 fps.  Works GREAT over Unique too pushed to 1338 (avg) for a hard hitting steel ringer.

I'll shoot pert near anything ...

Picked up the rifle on a monday (Christmas present from my girlfriend). I didn't get a chance to take it back home till last Sunday. Sighted it in that morning and went with my dad to hunt at my uncles ranch. It was raining and I was a little skeptical that I would get a chance to get my first kill with it. It was getting a little late in the afternoon and with the rain I was debating weather or not I would even kill something given the chance since I would have to skin it in the rain then drive an hour and a half back home and work at 6 the next morning. All my debating went out the window when the doe stepped out at 105yds. I was really excited to shoot my first deer with open sights and I made a great shot. She only ran about 25 yds.

I am loving mine. Still undecided what kind of sling to get and which set of glass I want to throw on it... I've been shooting it with the irons with good results but my eyesight isn't the greatest so a little magnification will go a long way for me. Here is mine, picked up today. Looks a lot like the others, but this one is mine. Have ordered a 5rnd polymer mag that should be here tomorrow and will shoot it this weekend. I mounted a cheapo Chinese scope & rings to evaluate the scout set-up. Never used a scout scope before and didn't want to find out I didn't like it AFTER spending several hundred $$'s on optics. I really like the way it handles and look forward to using it on a hog hunt next month.

^^ Even though you're just experimenting with that setup and not planning on keeping the scope, some low rings will go a long way for your hunt and will help you decide more accurately if you like the scout configuration or not.

Getting ready to go hunting at the end of the month...

Burris 1.5-6x40 7.62 XTR scope, XS full length rail w/ rear peep, Leupold QRW steel low rings, 5 mags (4 poly 10-round, 1 AI steel 10 round), Galco Safari Ching Sling, and my new S&W hunting knives with Micarta scales.
