I quit a two pack a day cigarette habit a year ago and spent some of the surplus on a pair of #1s with dies and bullets.   A Tropical in 450/400 3" N.E. and a 22" barreled 338Fed that I put VXII 2x7 on.  Both carry and shoot so nice I will have to find an actual use for them.

Also, I just had to fetch this one from the archives of Arf.com. Possibly one of the most aesthetically pleasing Mini’s I’ve ever seen...

That’s pretty slick. Would you say the weight increase was significant with the Sage chassis?

I only have one ruger long gun other than a 10/22

It was completely covered in mold. Unfortunately this caused very light pitting at the wood line. I don’t think it has been shot much.

My pair of Mini-30's.
One was originally a blued carbine, now Cerakoted in Sniper Grey. It's always had a wood stock, looked more traditional when it had a wood hand guard too.
But the Ultimak railed hand guard is much more practical. Besides being a great place to mount an optic, the Ultimak helps stiffen the barrel and acts as a heat sink, like the Accustrut does.

The other Mini started out as a stainless steel Mini with wood stock. I Cerakoted it in Tungsten. The black Ruger synthetic stock was originally done in Sniper Grey Cerakote, as I had lots of it at the time, but last winter, thinking the rig was too grey, I re did the stock in FDE.

Both have trigger jobs that I did, Vickers sling with side mount swivels, Tech sights, and thinned down front blades, buffers, and reduced gas port bushings.
The smaller bushing, buffers and shortening the barrel, recrown and adding a flash hider all help improve accuracy.
Both have Burris FF III's on the Ultimak, and they have the Burris Protector mount that wraps around the sight.
Whenever I need to do some load testing I take the FF off and mount the Nikon 2.5-8x LER scope, as my eyes aren't what they used to be.

Both Mini's are reliable, 1 1/4 MOA accurate and a hoot to shoot.

While those Sage, Tapco and ATI stocks look cool, I find them to add a lot of weight and not be very comfortable. I add a few short pieces of rail to the fore end, plenty for my uses. And if you mount the optic low and not all jacked up to the sky, there's no need for adjustable stock risers and strap on cheek pads.
The Mini's irons are low, and the scope should be in the same ballpark, in order to get the same cheek weld.
Nothing looks goofier than a too big scope on a Mini, mounted way too high.
How's this for low ?

Oh, I almost forgot my GSR .308. I use the same Nikon 2.5-8x LER scope with Warne Q.D. rings, and it has a Safariland Ching sling.

I gave up on the metal "boat rudder" 10 round mag in the pic, and have a bunch of poly mags now.
The poly mags are much less expensive, lighter, more durable (feed lips), don't stick down as far, less sharp on the fingers, quieter to change out and with the poly mags the GSR can be topped off from the top without removing the magazine.

From yesterday Quick shooting trip today. 1989 Ruger Mini-14 GB vs 2018 Ruger Mini-14 Ranch

Quick trip between getting off from work and getting home to make dinner and work out. Just a function test for both guns.

I'll put them through the paces soon enough.

Went to the range today just to function test my two new Minis and saw on the 50 yard range that someone posted two paper plates. So I taped over the holes and shot both from the bench.

This one is the 1989 made Mini-14 GB.

This one is the new 2018 production Ranch Rifle.

Here they both are from a free standing position just fooling around and doing some rapid fire.

I only brought 60 rounds.

My Curren t 186 Series with its 1/7 twist barrel.  Loves MK262 MOD1 77 grain 5.56!  Sort of my Winchester .224 Light Military Rifle homage gun, or an M1 Carbine with a hard on.  I replaced the original front ramp with a 583 series post and wing M1 style sight.  It was a direct swap with minimal fitting.

My Oregon version of the Mini-30 (which I sadly had to sell, but will replace since I am moving to Oregon in the spring)

Finished project: My 186 Series Mini-14 with 1/7 twist barrel.

Commiefornia legal with barrel threaded 1/2"x28 and a Wilson Combat Comp muzzle brake and my LEO marked 20 rounders from when I carried a Mini-14 as an LEO trunk weapon in the 80s and 90s.

My Oregon legal Mini-14 (pictures taken at daughter's in Medford Oregon so the California  trolls don't growl). This is how it will be after I move to my house in Coos Bay area in the spring.  Early Choate folding stock, and A2 flash hider.  Magazine in the weapon is an old USA Magazines 40 rounder I kept in my Minis in the patrol car trunk.

I have never liked OEM Ruger flash suppressors because they are "Birdcage/A1" style, instead of A2 style, with a closed-bottom that reduces prone position dust signature, and which also acts as a reduced-force muzzle compensator.  IOW, serves t reduce muzzle rise during rapid-fire, without increasing flash signature.  Best of both.  Sure there are devices that can exceed the "birdcage" but at objectionable expense, IMHO.

I changed the Muzzle device on my Scout to a .308 caliber-specific-made A2 flash suppressor, and am much happier with it than the OEM unit.  Sized right for the ctg, and not some junk re-worked 5.56 unit.  Easy way to tell:  The re-worked, crap 5.56 FS supposedly made for the .308 rifle will be the same length as the usual 5.56 FS, except that the slots will be lengthened; usually the slots will be intruding onto the reinforcement bands of the device.  Junk.  Wrong tool for the job.

With purpose-made 7.62 A2 FS, some slight muzzle rise reduction vice OEM Ruger Birdcage unit, and greatly reduced dust signature when shooting from prone--as expected.  Unfortunately, no longer offered, AFAIK.  As for the Mini, the Choate combo military front sight and closed-bottom A2-style flash suppressor has no modern all-around equal.  I strongly advocate the use of this unit on ANY Mini.  Install it properly, and buy it before it is banned, as it was previously.

If you have a sound suppressor, then the above comments mean nothing to you, since you want to attach/detach your S/S unit.  Then buy a device as you deem appropriate.  Just don't forget that your rifle might have to do W/O your S/S, and buy accordingly.

Yes, there are many independent tests of muzzle devices out there.  I suggest you look into them.  Many very expensive units are worse than the A2, which ranks pretty well, overall.  Take a look for yourself.
