I'm thinking about my next gun and am thinking 9mm UMP or an HK 94/MP5. I have a UMP conversion in .45 and absolutely love it but I'm kinda wanting an MP5. I've never had one sir even handled one but they are legendary, but is it better than a UMP?  That's what I'm here to find out. What are the pros and cons of each?

get both, I did

Seriously though, I like my MP5 clone better than the USC/UMP. My better half and friends like the 9mm UMP better. If you already have a UMP, I say get the MP5. You can always buy the 9mm conversion for the UMP.

edit - if you ever get up to Reno, you can shoot mine

I like the feel of a delayed roller locked action much better than a direct blowback. I fired a .40 UMP back to back with my .40 MP5, gotta say, I prefer the MP5 over the UMP.

MP5. The UMP porpoises too badly to interest me.

I've had both, sold the 94. Much more of a pain to clean and less fun to shoot. I still have the USC.

Having used both at work, I as well as my coworkers, I prefer the ump.. While the mp5, is smoother, and quieter suppressed, the umps how's less recoil caliber for caliber, in the 40 fall off is way more affective especially when shooting suppressed,  it's full power. Plus it seems slightly more reliable, easier to operate an and lighter.

Plus look so old school,  while the UM P, looks so new school.

I love my UMP, its WAY easier to takedown and put back together

I have a few Mp5's and a 45 Ump with a 9mm conversion kit. I'm in the act of purchasing another USC so i can have the 9mm conversion kit in a permanent home. With my Osprey suppressor, it's my favorite gun.

Can you have less recoil than an MP5?

The real question is, do you want 9/40 or .45.  How can you go wrong with this?  I love how the Tirant 45 is smoking at the end of the video.

Shooting a suppressed UMP

MP5, unless you can get a real UMP MG as a LEO. The 9 series guns can use a registered sear for full auto, a major plus.

Well,  I guess not in 9mm...

anyway, I still prefer a .45.

MP5 Pro's
1)  Been around a long time and parts are quite easy to get.
2)  9mm...easy to find
3)  Comes in several different sizes...HK94, SP89, Clones...etc
4)  Easy to shoot and control.  Should last a long time.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MP5 Con's
1)  Parts are getting more expensive
2)  Price.  HK94 or SP89 will run you around $1,000 more than a converted HKUMP
3)  Gunsmiths for HK weapons are expensive but they are around.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
HKUSC converted to UMP  Pro's
1)  .45 blowback is easy to control
2)  .45 ACP..easy to find
3)  Conversion, disassemble and repairing can be done at the user level.  No Gunsmith needed.
4)  For the $$$$ you can convert it to 9mm or .40S&W...Even SBR for $200
5)  Resale value is a little bit more than what you pay even if you upgrade with the conversion
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
HKUSC converted to UMP  Con's
1)  Not a lot of parts available other than two online sources.
2)  UMP magazines are getting hard to find and more expensive
3)  Selling can take a while as there isn't a huge demand for them

Overall,   I think you would be happy having both....but it really gets down to the $$$$$
I checked out a MP5/HK clone but if you go that route...be prepared to rebuild the whole gun.

Good luck!

The MP5 is the real deal. The UMP is an after-thought econo gun.

The MP5 is a steel gun that will last indefinitely. The UMP was designed for ease of manufacture and the military/LE who are ok with something wearing out because they can always replace them with our tax dollars.

I just got a UMP SBR conversion from HDPS. I inspected it last week when I filled the paperwork out and it looked great.

After shooting a full auto MP5 last year it is now on my list of things to get when the kids get older and I have more money. I couldn't believe how well it stayed on target in full auto.

Until that time I have a UMP I plan to enjoy (after the 6 month wait of course) and my MP5 .22

Are Mags still $70+?

I moved to 9mm simply to escape that.  My CA89 LOVES the Korean ATI mags. I got them for <$17/ea.  they're only $26 right now....

I have A UMP conversion SBR and and MKE AT94 SBR.  I vastly prefer the MKE.  Way better ergonomics and more fun to shoot.  Nothing wrong with the UMP though.

I've got both and in 9mm I like the MP5 better simply because of ten shooting characteristics. That said, the UMP is easier to clean and maintain, can take up to 3 calibers with minimal messing about and with some custom parts even be coverted to 10mm if you're so inclined.

Mp5 all the way...not even close in my opinion.

I chose both....sort of.  I love the roller locking action of the MP5 and I love the polymer receiver and stocks of the UMP.  So I found a Special Weapons SP10 and SBR'd it after some modifications.  Love it.  Best of both guns:
