At Aladdin, singer rubs wrong way

Linda Ronstadt apparently got what she wanted -- to be 86'd from the Aladdin.

In a bizarre performance notable for its bridge-burning comments, Ronstadt inflamed more than her Aladdin audience on Saturday by taking potshots at Las Vegas and dedicating "Desperado" to "Fahrenheit 9/11" filmmaker Michael Moore.

When her show was over, the Aladdin had her checked out of her room and escorted off the premises.

Many walked out during the show, one concertgoer tossed a cocktail on her poster, others defaced her posters and the box office was "a mob scene" of people seeking refunds, according to an Aladdin spokeswoman.

"It's amazing how ugly it got," said Tyri Squyres, director of public relations at the Aladdin.

Ronstadt was a one-woman heat wave.

Early in the show she told the crowd not to expect her greatest hits and added a snide remark or two about Las Vegas and the Aladdin. Scores of fans filed out when Ronstadt made her dedication to Moore and his controversial political film.

"Our management is incredibly upset," Squyres said. "We're just very disappointed because we hired her for a good evening of entertainment for our guests.

"It was like she came in with a chip on her shoulder," Squyres said.

Ronstadt allowed no meet-and-greets and no photographers.

Squyres said Ronstadt "inaccurately" told the crowd she saw a billboard that promoted a greatest-hits show. Ronstadt's camp had provided and approved all ads, commercials, billboards and news releases, Squyres said.

"To be clear, the Aladdin does not condone the comments made by Ms. Ronstadt," Squyres said by e-mail. "Ms. Ronstadt was hired to entertain the guests of the Aladdin, not to espouse her political views. Following her performance she was escorted out of the hotel and immediately checked out of her room. And she will not be welcomed back."

In an interview with the R-J's Mike Weatherford before the show, Ronstadt said with a laugh: "I keep hoping that if I'm annoying enough to them, they won't hire me back."

She soesn't know how to say no, old washed up singers tend to find concert performances hard to come by.

What a surprising, yet savory story. You'd think a washed-up, mediocre talent has-been like Ronstadt would be glad to have an audience, much less a paying audience. She and her slob lover Moore should take the show on the road to Libya or Canada or somewhere.

The crowds reaction was gratifing.  It lets you know that a lot of people DO GET IT.

If she didn't want the gig in the first place, why did she accept it to begin with? Like most of us, she's no doubt got bills to pay, but when you're an independent contractor (or a very dependent one, like me), you usually don't bite the hand that feeds you (sorry for the cliche). Oh well, she's a former Jerry Brown-loving Dem has-been. Glad I didn't pay money to go see the show.

Unfortunately, the new owners (taking over for the bankrupt owners in a couple of weeks) have pledged to have her back along with that nazi Moore to sing "America, the Beautiful". Apparently they believe that artists have "the right to free speech" and "desire to express themselves", and should not be censored. They're right; but it sucks that they want to fly in the face of the people who went to be entertained and instead were counseled on their patriotism. The new owners said they plan to invite Ronstadt back first thing, and Moore too if he agrees. Bastadge...

Here is a letter I wrote to Mr. Timmons of the Aladdin after they booted Ronstadt. Now that I know the Aladdin is being taken over by Socialists I will be writing another letter to the Aladdin (a very scathing one to boot) if Ronstadt and Moore take the stage in September.....

Dear Mr. Timmins:

I would like to congratulate you on your common sense decision to boot liberal singer Linda Ronstadt off Aladdin property. People have a right to say what they feel in this country, but when a professional artist such as Ronstadt is under contract to perform a service they should stay within the parameters of that contract and keep politics out of their performance. The Ditzy Chicks found that out the hard way.

If Ms. Ronstadt needs a forum in which to voice her political views she should consider the Democratic Convention where she would have 100 percent of the attendees sharing her feelings including a chubby White Pinko named Michael Moore.

I have been a Las Vegas resident for almost 30 years and I often enjoy short getaways but I cannot always leave town, therefore I will stay at different local properties. I can assure you that when my next "getaway" is planned the Aladdin will be at the top of my hotel list.

Once again, I believe you made the correct decision to remove a problematic guest from your hotel, that proved to be more harmful than good for business.

Sincerely,

Joe Nizzari

Nice letter. Unfortunately, Mr. Timmons doesn't really care because he is out, and the new owners also do not care (yet) because they're liberals. With this Ronstadt ploy they're trying to garner points with the liberals in this town and perhaps befriend a new bastion of patrons. Unfortunately, they don't realize that people won't tolerate crap like Ronstadt's, that the only people who like Moore's movies are extremist liberals who don't actually even see his movies, and they are in for a rude awakening with their perceived liberal constituency. Sit back and get some popcorn folks 'cause it's gonna be a good show.

From what CNN reported - the debacle aside her performance was pretty boring in the first place and subpar.

I dont know guys. This is deffenetly a touchy topic, because if she was thrown out of the hotel for her comments, that would violate her 1st amendment.

Now i deffenetly dont agree with her comments, and i agree she should have done her job.  if she had done the same thing many times before, the hotel should have expected it.

What i was told, is she was removed because she did not play some of teh songs she was contracted to perform.

But for the people attenting to go out in the halls and throw there drinks, and trash the place.  That was uncalled for and shows the how mature they are, and personaly i would not want someone dumb enough to trash a place because they didnt like what she had to say, i personally wouldnt want them in my political party.  If your hate for micheal moore allows you to accept this, then you are no better then those that trash the name of our riffles, and hand guns.

Now im not sure if any of you have seen moores movie.  I have.  I went in knowing that there is alot of his opinion that is thrown around in it, but there are somethings he talked in that movie that are true, and are even becoming me evident with congressenal investigations, or lack of investigations.

Exactly!! This is what the libs are failing to admit. You can't come in my house and keep running your mouth about shit I don't want to hear. I have every right to ask you to leave. Now if you want to go out and spew the same liberal nonsense out in the street, there isn't much that can be done.
