5 Tactical Tips to Survive a Home InvasionAre you aware that you’re eight times more likely to be involved in a home invasion attack than you are to be involved in a house fire? When intruders enter you house forcefully, whether for the thrill of it or to rob you and take your family hostage, this is considered to be a home invasion. Don’t make the mistake of thinking home invasions only take place in high crime areas. There are stories of home invasions taking place in suburbs and rural areas. These attacks are more common than most people think. Now is the time to plan a home defense strategy that will keep you and your family safe if you’re ever faced with a violent home invasion attack. Here’s Everything You Need To Know To Survive A Violent Home Invasion
You can view home invasion stories on the prime time news or in newspapers to understand the secret of surviving this kind of violent attack. One of the most common factors is that the home owner owns a gun or some other kind of weapon that can be used to defend themselves. If you are worried about becoming a victim of this type of crime, this is a very good idea. However, many handgun owners haven’t learned how to use their guns outside of the more relaxed atmosphere of the shooting range. There’s a self defense weapon that’s much more important than a gun. http://full-contact.military.com/2011/01/07/5-tactical-tips-to-survive-a-home-invasion/ |

The Tucson Shooting: a Reminder to Arm YourselfWhen Jared Loughner opened fire in Tucson on January 8, six people were killed and fourteen injured. No matter where you were sitting, as the 24-hour news carried the details of the story, the world seemed almost to stop spinning. The raw evil of what Loughner had done was simply too great for decent, law abiding citizens to comprehend. Sadly, it didn’t take long for various talking heads on the left to see the shooting as just another crisis that could be used to further their agenda: tightening gun control, besmearing the Tea Party, and destroying Sarah Palin. For instance, within 48 hours of the shooting, Representative Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY) promised to introduce stricter gun control legislation as soon as her staff could draw it up, the Washington Post’s Courtland Milloy affixed blame to the Tea Party, and uber-leftist Paul Krugman disgraced himself as one of the shrillest voices placing the blame on Palin. http://pajamasmedia.com/blog/the-tucson-shooting-a-reminder-to-arm-yourself/?singlepage=true |

SHOT SHOW: Stoeger to Debut M3500. Finally. A little sneak peak action at the Las Vegas SHOT Show. A big ass poster hangs over the entrance announcing the new Stoeger M3500. And not before time. Questions about the shotgun’s arrival stateside have been on the net for, oh, four years. I can tell you nothing about the shotgun save the fact that it uses the inertia-drive system—the same gizmology used by the Benelli M2 Tactical reviewed by TTAG. Which means the M3500 also fires everything from light loads to 3.5″ magnum shells. And, unlike the $1k Benelli, the Stoeger scattergun doesn’t cost a whole lot. In other words, what you see above. We’ll pop by Stoeger’s booth tomorrow and report back. Or not. Depending on how lost I get for how long and where. http://thetruthaboutguns.com/2011/01/robert-farago/shot-show-stoeger-to-debut-m3500-finally/ |

Utah lawmaker: Guns should be legal without permit However, prevention group thinks process should be tightened SALT LAKE CITY — A Utah lawmaker wants to allow all state residents who can legally have a gun carry and conceal it without a permit. Rep. Carl Wimmer, R-Herriman, said he plans to introduce a bill to eliminate the requirement for a state concealed weapon permit to carry a loaded gun. People who do not live in Utah would still need a permit issued by Utah or another state. The measure is being drafted for the legislative session that begins Jan. 24. Wimmer said it wouldn't change laws about who can legally have a gun. Felons, people who have committed a violent crime and illegal residents are now prohibited from carrying a gun. "If you're a law-abiding, upstanding citizen, you can protect yourself by carrying a gun without a permit," Wimmer said. Alaska, Arizona and Vermont already have similar laws, he said. The proposal would not eliminate concealed weapon permits because people would still need them to carry a concealed gun in other states. http://www.deseretnews.com/article/700100439/Utah-lawmaker-Guns-should-be-legal-without-permit.html |

State concealed weapons law gets national scrutiny PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — As a lawsuit challenging South Dakota's concealed-weapons law gets the attention of national groups, the top Republican in the South Dakota Senate says he doesn't see a need for the law to be changed. A British citizen who lives in Sioux Falls sued the state earlier this month after he was not allowed to renew his concealed-weapons permit. The Legislature changed the concealed weapons law in 2002 to only allow United States citizens to obtain permits. Senate Republican Leader Russell Olson, of Wentworth, said his main priority is preserving gun rights for U.S. citizens. "I'll fight for the rights of the citizens of South Dakota," Olson said Friday. "My concern is for the citizens of our state and our nation." "Foreign nationals don't fall under my umbrella," he added in a separate interview. http://www.necn.com/01/16/11/State-concealed-weapons-law-gets-nationa/landing_nation.html?&blockID=3&apID=55d419b16e474ea69f1f29eeb7407cdd |

Arizona lawmakers, governor: No gun, ammo limits after Loughner rampageJared Loughner is accused of emptying 31 rounds from his Glock 9 in front of the Safeway in Tucson, enabling him to hit 19 people before he had to reload. It was when he needed that other clip, witnesses said, they were able to stop him. But Gov. Jan Brewer told Capitol Media Services she sees no reason for Arizona to limit the sale of these high-capacity magazine. Neither does Senate President Russell Pearce. And House Speaker Kirk Adams said through a spokesman he has no plans to alter any of Arizona's gun laws. All three also defended last year's decision to let any adult carry a concealed weapon without a state permit, making Arizona the only state with large urban areas to do so. Vermont and Alaska are the other two. http://www.ahwatukee.com/news/valley_and_state/article_fd341ba7-281a-53d5-9c4d-c467301d5a3b.html |

Mexican gunman fires across border toward U.S. highway workers FORT QUITMAN, Texas –– At least one Mexican gunman fired a high-powered rifle across the border at four U.S. road workers Thursday in an isolated ghost town east of Fort Hancock, Hudspeth County sheriff's officials said. The bullets did not injure the four men. Mike Doyle, chief deputy of the Hudspeth County Sheriff's Office, said a rancher spotted a white pickup fleeing the area on the Mexican side at 10:30 a.m. –– the time the shots were fired. The bullets stuck private land along the unpaved Indian Hot Springs Road, which is about half a mile from the border fence. Hudspeth County borrowed the land to store gravel and rocks used for road construction. The workers were filling a hole left last year by rainstorm damage. The ghost town of Fort Quitman is 25 miles east of Fort Hancock and 80 miles southeast of El Paso. Fewer than a dozen ranchers raise cattle in the remote area. Doyle said the gunman might have shot at the road workers to distract them or get them to flee. http://www.elpasotimes.com/ci_17087113?source=most_viewed |

Praslick Teaches Wind-Reading SkillsWe know many of our readers will be headed off to Camp Perry, Ohio for the NRA National Rifle Championships soon. To succeed at Perry, given the high level of competition, you’ll need solid wind-reading abilities. We’ve found an article by SFC Emil Praslick III, USAMU Service Rifle coach, that can help you make better wind calls in competition. SFC Praslick is considered one of the best wind gurus in the United States, if not the world. He has authored an excellent two-part article on wind reading that is available on the CMP (Civilian Marksmanship Program) website. Both articles contain helpful illustrations, and are "must-read” resources for any long-range shooter–not just Service Rifle and Highpower competitors. Video Shows Lake City Ammo Production ProcessWhat’s the next best thing to a stockpile of gleaming, freshly-loaded ammo? How about a movie showing gleaming, freshly-loaded ammo being made — from start to finish? The five-minute video below shows the ammunition production process at the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant, a division of ATK. Lake City is the largest producer of small arms ammunition for the U.S. military, producing roughly four MILLION small-caliber rounds every day. This promotional video does go overboard at times (too many smiling employees gushing about quality control). Still, it is fascinating to watch the process of creating cartridges — from the drawing (or extrusion) of raw brass into casings to the placement of projectiles and primers. http://bulletin.accurateshooter.com/2011/01/video-shows-lake-city-ammo-production-process/ |

Dueling Polls on Gun Control
In the wake of the Tucson shootings, CBS News and CNN/Opinion Research Corp. –– among other organizations –– conducted polls asking Americans about their views on gun control. The CBS poll results indicated "there is no significant change in public views on the issue of gun control and gun rights." According to the CNN/ORC poll, 69 percent said they "have not changed their opinion" that more gun control is needed. Then, on Jan. 18, Mayors Against Illegal Guns announced the results of a poll it commissioned which, essentially, confirmed the same results but, somehow, indicate that Americans want and need more gun control. The survey was conducted jointly by Momentum Analysis, a polling firm with Democratic clients, and American Viewpoint, a polling firm with Republican clients. The consensus is that "both gun owners and the general public support stronger measures to keep firearms out of the hands of criminals and other potentially dangerous individuals." http://www.outdoorlife.com/blogs/gun-shots/2011/01/dueling-polls-gun-control |

Gun rights aren't sacred in U.S. I believe the United States Constitution is the greatest legal document ever created. We should all know, our current constitution was adopted in 1787 after the founding fathers scrapped the Articles of Confederation, which was our first constitution. Thereafter, the first 10 amendments known as the "Bill of Rights" was added to the Constitution in 1791 and our constitution has been amended another 17 times. What makes our constitution the greatest legal document ever created is the fact that it is a living document. However, it is not the infallible word of God as many wish to believe. The framers of the Constitution were aware that changes would be necessary if the Constitution was to endure as the nation grew, changed and progressed. Most of us know that the original Constitution allowed slavery and did not give women the right to vote. As our nation became more free, amendments were made to change that. Other changes were also made. For example, the Eighteenth Amendment Prohibited alcoholic beverages, but was of course later repealed by the 21st Amendment. http://www.mycentraljersey.com/article/20110125/OPINION02/101250314/Gun-rights-aren-t-sacred-in-U-S- |

Bill of Rights protects everyone While it is true that Jared Lee Loughner purchased a gun and committed a horrible crime with it, the Second Amendment was not written to prevent or predict such acts. The Second Amendment was primarily written to protect the American people from an overbearing government that would desire to disarm its citizens. Our wise Founding Fathers knew that the government that they established could eventually become corrupted to the point where it wanted to decide everything for its citizens, take as much of their money from them as they could, and that the members of such government would attempt to exclude themselves from the laws it expects the citizens to follow. Modern examples of such corruption: the liberal left agenda, ridiculous taxation and the unwanted health-care bill, in that order. The Second Amendment was also written in full realization that firearms can and will be used as tools for committing crimes. However, if citizens were not allowed to openly carry and keep guns, then only criminals and law enforcement will have them. That possibility would make criminals more brazen to commit crimes. It is well known that thieves are less likely to steal from a house or business that has a good security system. Likewise, criminals are less likely to commit crimes if they know that their would-be victims might be armed. http://www.vindy.com/news/2011/jan/25/bill-of-rights-protects-everyone/?newswatch |

I write to correct an understandable but nonetheless egregious grammatical error in JT Coyote's attempt to parse the syntax of the Second Amendment in his opinion column. He describes the one-sentence amendment as consisting of "two dependent clauses, each modifying and explaining the other.” Not so. (Not possible either.) The first "clause” is in fact a nominative absolute, and the second is the independent or main clause of the sentence. Let me explain. In its original form the Second Amendment reads as follows: "A well regulated Militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed.” An absolute construction in its simplest form consists of a noun or pronoun and a participle that are absolute, i.e., grammatically separate and detached from the main clause, which it modifies adverbially. Example: "Hostages accepted, Caesar led his troops back to camp.” The noun is "Hostages,” the participle "accepted,” and the two words together constitute a nominative absolute. Absolute constructions are common in Indo-European languages but differ in case as witness the ablative, genitive, and locative absolutes in Latin, Greek, and Sanskrit respectively. http://www.summitdaily.com/article/20110125/LETTER/110129899/1078&ParentProfile=1055 |

Lawmaker takes issue with OKC police chief's remarks about weaponsI sincerely appreciate the service that Oklahoma City Police Chief Bill Citty has given to our community and share his concern for his officers. However, I strongly disagree with his view that certain types of military-style firearms inherently pose a great public threat ("OKC police chief wants tougher gun laws,” news story, Jan. 16). City Councilmen Sam Bowman and Pete White have supported Citty's stance and share the belief that these types of weapons have no place in civil communities. I consider those comments to be uncivil to the hundreds of thousands of law-abiding Oklahoma gun owners. More importantly, efforts to impose these views on all citizens are a danger to our guaranteed Oklahoma and U.S. constitutional freedoms. |

NRA gives Bloomberg snow blowThe National Rifle Association opened both barrels onMayor Bloomberg yesterday, comparing his efforts to rein in gun violence to the city's botched response to last month's blizzard. A top official for the powerful gun-rights group told a crowd of sportsmen thatBloomberg –– whom he repeatedly derided as "Mayor Blame" –– was attempting to deflect responsibility for local gun crimes, just as he did when the city's unplowed streets left New Yorkers fuming. "He likes to blame everyone else for violent crime in New York City," NRA political director Chuck Cunningham said. Ammunition Ban Struck Down By CourtApparently some sanity still exists in the judiciary when it comes to gun rights. And it comes from one of the least likely places: California. On Jan. 19 a Fresno Superior Court judge ruled that a California law that would have banned mail order ammunition sales and required all purchases of so-called "handgun ammunition” to be registered was unconstitutionally vague. The law was set to take effect Feb. 1, and the ruling means the burdensome and ill-conceived restrictions on the sales of ammunition will not be enforced.
An appeal by the State is likely but, for a time, at least, someone in California actually understands what the 2nd Amendment means. https://news.personalliberty.com/pub/cc?_ri_=X0Gzc2X%3DUQpglLjHJlTQueQcjP4QinzdIQrkGQ4fUEzdQGQaQ7zgbVXtpKX%3DSRCDCUYR&_ei_=Gf6beX6990G11X%3DHtuHkkHjhxzbQJhuV0bb9X%3DUBTWBRSAD |

With Gun Control, Canadian Criminals Are Making A Killing "After a shooting spree, they always want to take the guns away from the people who didn’t do it.”–William Burroughs When I lived in Spokane, Wash., I exercised my right as an American citizen to own a handgun. As an American living in Canada, I no longer have that right. And while there may be fewer guns in Canada, I feel less safe than I did in the U.S. That is because up here it is the criminals that have guns. There is no constitutional right to bear arms in Canada. Instead, most of us hope that we won’t someday look down the barrel of a gun drawn by a felon. On Jan. 13 the Ottawa Citizen, concluded that Canadian gun legislation is a failure: "As strict as Canadian gun laws appear, they do not prevent the movement of illegal firearms in or out of this country, nor their possession, and only cover those firearms that have been registered. Last year, Canadian police services reported some 8,000 victims of violent gun crime, ranging from assault to robbery and homicide — a rate of almost one person per hour victimized by violent gun crime. On average, more than 1,200 Canadians are killed and more than 1,000 injured with firearms each year.” https://news.personalliberty.com/pub/cc?_ri_=X0Gzc2X%3DUQpglLjHJlTQueQcjP4QinzdIQrkGQ4fUEzdQGQaQ7zgbVXtpKX%3DSRCDCUWD&_ei_=Gf6beX6990G11X%3DHtuHkkHjhxzbQJhuV0bb9X%3DUBTWBRSAD |

What do ‘sporting purposes’ have to do with Second Amendment? The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives has just released its "Study on the Importability of Certain Shotguns.” Here’s what it’s about: The purpose of this study is to establish criteria that [ATF] will use to determine the importability of certain shotguns under the provisions of the Gun Control Act of 1968 (GCA). Like what? Under one [category] the Attorney General shall approve applications for importation when the firearms are generally recognized as particularly suitable for or readily adaptable to sporting purposes (the "sporting purposes test”). PETA Accused of Oklahoma Spy Plot 1/27/11 The animal rights group PETA may be stepping into some hot water in the Sooner state. The director of an Oklahoma animal park claims to have evidence that PETA used a former employee as a spy in order to give the park a black eye. Joe Schreibvogel, the director of G.W. Exotic Animal Park, indicated he has a taped confession that proves PETA paid the employee to essentially act as a spy. Schreibvogel says the employee used an external hard drive to copy files from the park’s main computer and that he used a camera to take pictures that might be embarrassing. That camera was allegedly purchased for the employee by PETA. The County Sheriff’s office is currently investigating the claims and whether any laws related to downloading of information were violated. As of press time, no arrests have been made or charges filed. In quotes to the media, Schreibvogel states, "If they make it look like they're rescuing our animals then more money goes to PETA.” He also maintains that the park has received high marks over the last few years with all required state and federal inspections. http://www.ussportsmen.org/page.aspx?pid=2649 |

Obama To Push Gun Control Soon To the dismay of the Brady Campaign and other gun ban groups, President Barack Obama didn’t address gun control during his State of the Union address on January 25th. However, Newsweek reports that "in the next two weeks, the White House will unveil a new gun-control effort,” and that the White House confirms, "Obama will address the gun issue in a separate speech, likely early next month.” According to Newsweek, Obama believes that gun laws have been "too loose for much longer than just the past few weeks” following the murders in Tucson, Arizona. Precisely what President Obama might have in mind is uncertain. His post-election transition website advocated reimposing the expired federal "assault weapon” ban, but that ban would clearly be irrelevant in the wake of a shooting that involved a firearm not covered by the old ban. http://www.nraila.org/Legislation/Federal/Read.aspx?id=6173 |

Reps. Rehberg And Boswell Introduce H.R. 420—"Veterans Heritage Firearms Act" This week, U.S. Representatives Denny Rehberg (R-MT) and Leonard Boswell (D-IA) introduced H.R. 420 –– the "Veterans' Heritage Firearms Act." The legislation would provide a limited amnesty period for veterans who served overseas before 1968. During the amnesty period, the veterans would be able to register war relic firearms without fear of prosecution. This amnesty would also extend to a veteran's lawful heirs who inherit these firearms. During WW II and the Korean War, many veterans acquired war relic firearms, which, at the time, was a lawful practice. Under current law, however, if these firearms are not registered in the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record, the veteran or his heir may be convicted of illegal possession. Magazine Ban, Gun Show Ban and Even a Gun Ownership Ban...
–– All this and more may come up in the Senate! Friday, February 4, 2011 Since the Tucson tragedy, anti-gun Senator Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) has been hovering like a vulture, waiting to pick the bones of the victims for political advantage. Now he has his chance. The same Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reauthorization which provided a vote on the repeal of ObamaCare may well be the vehicle for a series of gun control proposals. Right now, no one knows which amendments will be offered. Democratic leaders like Senator Richard Durbin (D-IL) are threatening to offer anti-gun amendments, and pro-gun Senators like Tom Coburn (R-OK) are considering amendments to protect gun rights. Now, it's entirely possible that senators from both sides will simply retreat to their own corners. In fact, GOA's sources inside the Senate indicate that gun amendments to the FAA bill are unlikely at this point, but there's no way can we count on that –– and risk being caught unprepared. There are three amendments which Lautenberg and Representative Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY) have been nursing since Tucson. The first would limit semi-automatic magazines to 10 rounds, in a reprise of the Clinton ban. The second would effectively shut down all gun shows. It would do this by sending any gun show promoter to prison for up to two years if a SINGLE attendee were not informed of his Brady Law obligations. No one would dare sponsor a gun show under these circumstances. The third anti-gun amendment would allow the Obama administration to seize guns from anyone they choose to place on a "watch list." Millions and millions of pro-gun supporters could find their names on an ObamaList with no due process –– and no way to get their names removed. Please note that this administration has already advised law enforcement to treat supporters of the Constitution and gun rights as possible domestic terrorists! http://gunowners.org/a020411.htm |

Feinstein Asks President To Tighten Import Restrictions On Semi-Automatic RiflesOn Tuesday, Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) sent a letter to President Barack Obama, urging him to have the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives review its interpretation of the federal law that provides for the importation of firearms "generally recognized as particularly suitable for or readily adaptable to sporting purposes." Adopting a narrower interpretation of the law would, Feinstein claimed, help reduce violence in Mexico and the United States. As the Supreme Court said in District of Columbia v. Heller (2008), the Second Amendment protects the right to keep and bear arms primarily for self-defense. This means the "sporting purposes" limitation imposed by the Gun Control Act of 1968 is constitutionally suspect, to put it mildly. What makes matters worse is that BATFE repeatedly misinterprets the law to serve political ends, which is precisely what Feinstein has in mind. http://www.nraila.org/Legislation/Federal/Read.aspx?id=6207 |

As previously reported, two NRA-backed bills have been filed in the New Mexico Legislature and have now been assigned to committees where they are awaiting action. Senate Bill 220 is the NRA-backed "Castle Doctrine” self-defense bill which would allow lawful occupants of a dwelling to use any degree of physical force against an intruder. The second, House Bill 140, would eliminate the mandatory mid-term firearms refresher training course currently required for Concealed Handgun Licensees. SB 220, sponsored by state Senator George Munoz (D-Gallup), has been referred to the Senate Public Affairs & Senate Judiciary Committees. As of now, no hearing has officially been scheduled for the bill. Stream NSSF Firearm Safety Videos Online McGruff on Gun Safety, It's Your Call and Firearm Safety Depends on You NEWTOWN, Conn.—Many of last night's Super Bowl's ads promoted the latest Hollywood films, and we'll no doubt invest many hours watching them. The National Shooting Sports Foundation, trade association for the firearms and ammunition industry, suggests investing a fraction of that time watching videos with your children that can help prevent a firearms-related accident. It won't cost you a ticket or rental fee either. New, higher-definition versions of NSSF's three firearms safety videos are available online, including for the first time in its entirety "McGruff on Gun Safety," the educational video for children in grades K through 6. Also available for viewing are "It's Your Call: Playing It Safe Around Guns" designed for students in grades 6 though 9, and "Firearm Safety Depends on You," which provides a review of firearm safety rules for audiences of all ages. All videos can be streamed free of charge at www.nssf.org/safety/video. NSSF asks that you bring these videos to the attention of your child's school or teacher, or that you view them with your children so that they understand how to safely respond if they should encounter a firearm in an unsupervised situation. Teacher discussion guides, safety pledges and classroom activities brochures that complement the student-education videos can be downloaded. The power of video to teach important safety lessons is as important as its power to entertain. Learn about gun safety with your children today. http://www.nssf.org/safety/video/ |

JANUARY 2011 NSSF-ADJUSTED NICS BACKGROUND CHECKS UP 9.7% The January 2011 NSSF-adjusted National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) figure of 784,856 is an increase of 9.7 percent over the NSSF-adjusted NICS figure of 715,309 in January 2010. For comparison, the unadjusted January 2011 NICS figure of 1,312,544 is an increase of 18 percent over the unadjusted NICS figure of 1,112,312 in January 2010. The adjusted NICS data was derived by NSSF by subtracting out NICS purpose code permit checks used by several states such as Kentucky and Utah for CCW permit application checks as well as checks on active CCW permit databases. While not a direct correlation to firearms sales, the NSSF-adjusted NICS data provides a more accurate picture of current market conditions. http://www.nssf.org/bulletpoints/current.cfm |

Congressional ‘gun control’ report telegraphs anti-gunners’ ‘wish list’ On Feb. 3, the Congressional Research Service, the policy and legal analysis branch of the Library of Congress, released a report titled "Gun Control Legislation” by William J. Krouse, Specialist in Domestic Security and Crime Policy. Here’s what it does: This report provides basic firearms-related statistics, an overview of federal firearms law, and a summary of legislative action in the 111th Congress and selected legislative action in the 110th Congress that involved issues revisited in the 111th Congress. The report concludes with a discussion of other salient issues that have generated significant congressional interest in the past, including the 1994-2004 LCAFD ban. Importantly, here is what is under consideration: Other salient and recurring gun control issues that have generated past congressional interest include (1) screening firearms background check applicants against terrorist watch lists; (2) reforming the regulation of federally licensed gun dealers; (3) requiring background checks for private firearms transfers at gun shows; (4) more-strictly regulating certain firearms previously defined in statute as "semiautomatic assault weapons”; and (5) banning or requiring the registration of certain long-range .50 caliber rifles, which are commonly referred to as "sniper” rifles. |

ATF Declaring War on Honest Gun Owners
Time for Congress to rein in this rogue agency They are coming for your guns any way they can. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is waging a war on innocent gun owners, and not surprisingly, the Obama administration has done nothing to keep them in check. You are no doubt aware of how the agency has been going after honest gun dealers in recent years. Combine that with byzantine federal laws and regulations –– subject to BATF interpretation –– and it's no wonder the number of FFL holders has decreased almost 80%. Then there was former National Guardsman David Olofson. In 2008, Olofson's loaned AR-15 malfunctioned at a range –– firing a three-round burst with a single trigger pull. The ATF could only replicate the malfunction after experimenting with different types of ammunition behind closed doors. Having achieved the result they wanted, the ATF labeled Olofson's gun a machine gun, and he was sentenced to three years in prison for an illegal "transfer." http://gunowners.org/a020811.htm |

Newest Fox News piece:Mayor Bloomberg's Arizona Gun Show P.R. StuntNew York City's murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault rates rose last year according to preliminary FBI data, with murders alone increasing by more than 12 percent. But instead of concentrating on crime in New York City, Mayor Bloomberg just spent $100,000 of the NYPD's budget sending police to Arizona to buy guns at a gun show. The "sting" was a waste of money that misleads Americans and did nothing to reduce crime. Talk about an aggressive publicity stunt. Arizona officials had not been informed of the operation, which meant that any potential crimes uncovered by the New York City officers could not be prosecuted. But, instead of spending $100,000, Bloomberg could have learned what he did for the price of a phone call or an Internet search. Arizonans, like residents in 31 other states, can buy guns from private individuals without a criminal background check, just an Arizona driver's license to demonstrate residency. . . . |

THE OTHER SHOE For more than three years I've been saying that the next round of gun restrictions will come from agencies and departments, and not through passing laws. That's how President Obama is able to avoid, as he did in the State of the Union Address, talking about gun control. His State Department blocks the importation of hundreds of thousands of WWII surplus rifles from South Korea. No gun control laws were passed. His ATF is trying to call for mandatory reporting of anyone buying two or more long guns anywhere near the Mexican border, (on the backburner now amid complaints, but watch for it's return). But, no gun control laws passed there. The latest is the ATF calling for comments on its plan to prevent importation of shotguns which do not meet an arbitrary "sporting use" mandate (given to us with the passage of the absurd Gun Control Act of 1968). Now that the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that we have the right to own guns for self protection, there should be absolutely no restrictions on guns based on subjective judgments about whether a gun is used for sport. This new move from the ATF is clearly aimed at the Saiga brand of autoloading shotgun, and one can guess it's because this smoothbore doesn't look like an over and under or double barrel. It's a modern-looking autoloading shotgun often used in three-gun competitions around the country. Competition –– as in sport shooting. Not that "sport" has anything to do with the Second Amendment. |

Rare ocelot observed in southern Arizona
PHOENIX – Arizona Game and Fish Department officials report that a rare ocelot was observed this morning (Feb. 8) in the Huachuca Mountains in southern Arizona. An individual called Game and Fish this morning to report that while he was working in his yard in the Huachuca Mountains, his dogs began barking at a cat-like animal which quickly climbed a tree. The individual drew closer and suspected that the small spotted cat might be an ocelot. An ocelot is a rare and endangered species of cat. The man called Game and Fish and an officer responded to the site and confirmed that it was, in fact, an ocelot. The officer did a non-intrusive, visual inspection of the animal from the ground near the tree, and the animal appeared to be healthy. There was no indication that there had been any dog-to-cat direct interaction, as no wounds were visible on any animal. Ocelots are protected by the Endangered Species Act and should be left alone. If anyone encounters a cat believed to be an ocelot, we would request that all sightings and photos along with observation information be reported immediately to the department. More information and additional photos will be made available Wednesday, visit www.azgfd.gov for details. http://www.azgfd.gov/ |

CCRKBA Calls for Senate Investigations of ATFBELLEVUE, WA – The Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms is urging its members to contact the Senate and demand a full and open inquiry into a controversial gun trafficking sting operation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives that may be linked to the December slaying of a federal peace officer. After Customs and Border Protection Agent Brian Terry was killed in a shootout two months ago, two of the guns recovered at the crime scene were traced to a sale that was part of the ATF’s "Project Gunrunner” investigation. U.S. Sen. Charles Grassley (R-IA), ranking Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, has asked the ATF about this case, and has been met by bureau stonewalling. In a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder this week, Sen. Grassley said it is time to "come clean” about this operation. "For two years,” said CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb, "we’ve been hearing from Holder and others in the Obama administration about a so-called ‘iron pipeline’ of American guns across the border. Only after the recent arrests in Arizona did we learn, through court documents, that hundreds of guns were allowed to be purchased by alleged straw buyers, while ATF conducted its investigation. Now, according to various news reports, two of those guns showed up at a crime scene where a federal officer lost his life. What is going on here? |

Rep. Denny Rehberg Sponsors Legislation to Allow Import of Legal M1 Semi-Automatic RiflesWASHINGTON, D.C. – Montana’s Congressman, Denny Rehberg, sponsored legislation to compel the State Department to allow the importation of 857,470 lawful M1 semi-automatic rifles into the United States. The rifles were relics from the Korean War, which are being sold by South Korea in an effort to raise money for its military. These rifles would be made available to the public as well as to museums and historical societies. "Whether it’s importing legal rifles or blaming legal firearms sales for the violence of Mexican drug criminals, this State Department has appointed itself as the spearhead of regulatory gun control in America,” said Rehberg, a member of the Second Amendment Task Force. "Americans should not apologize for our freedom. We shouldn’t feel bad for insisting that our government respects our rights. And we absolutely should not be allowing the Administration to restrict the importation of legal guns on the whim of an anti-gun bureaucracy.” In its decision to block the importation of these rifles, the State Department claimed that the M1’s "could potentially be exploited… for illicit purposes.” Possession of these firearms by Americans is lawful, and purchasers would have to be approved through the National Instant Check System used for all domestic firearms purchases http://www.thestatecolumn.com/state_politics/montana/rep-denny-rehberg-sponsors-legislation-to-allow-import-of-legal-m1-semi-automatic-rifles/ |

Gun Owners of America Activists Win Three Key Battles in Congress There is good news on several fronts. Washington, DC ––(Ammoland.com)- GOA recently warned you that anti-gun Democrats might attempt to attach gun control restrictions on the bill to reauthorize funding the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration). These proposals included a ban on high capacity magazines, restrictions that would end gun shows and, potentially, stripping millions of gun owners of their rights by placing them on "watch lists” without any due process of law. At this point, it appears that your efforts to counter these disastrous proposals with GOA-backed initiatives have backed the gun grabbers into a corner, and we are optimistic that their plans are stymied for now. http://www.ammoland.com/tag/goa/ |

One Washington to the other: Crime stats tell the tale A spokeswoman for the Seattle Police Department said today that the city posted only 19 homicides in 2010, the lowest figure in recent memory, while Washington, D.C. – a city with a similar-sized population – logged 131 homicides, according to the Metropolitan Police Department’s website. This column checked that department’s website after speaking with SPD spokeswoman Renee Witt. That is not bad news for the District, however, because for the second year in a row, the number of murders in the nation’s capitol declined, from 143 in 2009 and 186 in 2008. Prior to that, the number had hovered above 150 and usually above 200 for many years. Now, surprise of surprises, that sharp drop came in the two years following the landmark Supreme Court ruling in District of Columbia v. Dick Anthony Heller, which struck down the District’s handgun ban and affirmed that the Second Amendment protects an individual civil right. Mexico's Gun Supply Myth
ONLY SMALL PERCENTAGE OF U.S. ORIGIN . . . In a new report, the independent research group STRATFOR has corroborated what NSSF has been saying for some time about firearms recovered from drug cartels in Mexico: that it is erroneous and grossly misleading to say, as Mexican officials and the media have done, that 90 percent of the firearms recovered came from the United States. The truth is that less than 12 percent of the guns Mexico seized in 2008 have been verified as coming from the United States. The proof can be found in U.S. government statistics that the STRATFOR report and the accompanying pie chart explain. http://www.nssfblog.com/report-shatters-myth-of-mexicos-gun-supply/ |
