Looking at the options for an OWB holser carried strong side 4oclock. Higher on belt for motorcycle riding...

The retention requirements?

Dont want something huge like a Duty safariland. But something a little better than a black hawk paddle holster.

Pretty much anything on the waist and drop leg works as well or shoulder holster. Damn I wish shoulder holsters were cheaper. I use a wheelchair so they work good for me.

Officially, there are no retention requirements, or even any real definition of a holster.

The only requirements are are that it be in a belt or shoulder holster. No Mexican carry, no droplegs.

That is open for interpretation since drop leg holsters ARE attached to the belt.

Look as these examples:

Which is legal, which is not?  Both?  Neither?

According to DPS in both my initial certification class, as well as the "awesome" refresher that I did in August, was that the AG did not consider those attached to the leg as a "belt holster" for the purpose of open carry.

I agree, that whole part of the law is shit.

So don’t use the leg strap and it suddenly becomes ok?

Time has passed since LTC became effective so I'm very curious if anyone has been indicted with carrying with a drop leg holster.  Based on my pictures above, I find it very difficult for any DA to take this case.  Only way I can see someone pushing this would be an add-on charge but that would be a stretch.

What does this qualify as?

I sure as fuck don't have the answers.  Its just like the police officer sitting next to me said back when I took the class: there's codified law, case law, and the DA's opinion. We have codified law for open carry holsters. We don't have case law, at least yet. We may or may not know the DA's opinion as to whether or not they feel like prosecuting you at that time.

The whole open carry thing is idiotic. Dozens of states have it, and Texas royally fucks up the wording, to ensure that Paco isn't jamming his Hi Point into his waistband.

Even though they are technically retention holsters, the Safariland ALS series has such an intuitive locking mechanism that you can loosen the screws (minimize friction with the gun) and get a faster draw than you would with a reasonable friction-only holster.

I don't know what a PISTOL is.  So I cant make suggestions for the gun itself.

However buy a holster that attaches to the belt directly, without DROPS or lanyards or anything else between the holster and the belt and there wont be any issues with interpretations.

The whole "in a holster" thing needs to go away. It is fucking up the way I carry my AR pistol in my truck. I have to keep it concealed in order to be legal....Never had that issue with a full size rifle...

Checkout the Concealment versions of the Safariland ALS. I think the model number for the paddle version is the 6378.

Strauss got moderates and Democrats to support him, plus he was the fair haired boy of the business community.

For OWB I use Safariland retention holsters.  I haven't found them overly bulky at all, but I'm also not trying to conceal anything when I wear them.  I use their holsters with the GLS locking system but I like ALS too; the newer 7TS holsters are nice.

1) Retention isn't required, but it's strongly suggested.  The DPS officers teaching the instructor courses (including the refresher course) always talk about how they chastise people in public about non retention holsters.
2) Only requirement is that an openly carried firearm be restrained in a shoulder or belt holster.

I wouldn't test my luck with a drop leg, I'd use something that's clearly belt or shoulder.  You may beat the rap using something outside of the norm, but the ride... perhaps not.
