(Don't cross your feet, lol). Rob Kahn, who was part of the first class of Royce Gracie Blackbelts has also posted on this thread. The guys I've seen in Royce's network are at a very high level indeed. |

That is funny, I did not even realize I crossed my feet until I posted the pic......I saw it, then you commented.
Anyway, I had to go back from page 1 and read all the posts. I found Rob's post, friggin' awesome to see him on here, I hope he becomes active. I have been down to Gracie Tampa once, Rob was not there. He has so many awesome guys that the class was awesome. I do not know anyone that doesn't say anything but the best about the man. Usually when I go to Florida, I roll up at Jon Burke's. Jon is one of the greatest ambassadors to the sport, just a plain down to earth great guy. You can find him at http http://www.the6levels.com/ Rob's is http://gracietampa.net/home.htm. If anyone is ever in Charlotte, we have the Charlotte Royce Gracie Network, which is run by a man that goes by Snake and Mike K. Mike is Royce Gracie's personal business manager. Come and visit!!! |

I'm currently training with an Alliance team here in the DFW area. However, I recently started a new job that has been keeping me out of town quite a bit, so it's been a while. Last summer I trained with Mazzi up at Royce Gracie team ROC Chapel Hill. Great guy. Great instructor. Sick BJJ. |

Bad news fellas. I Hyper-extended my thumb today while rolling in Judo class. I was taking a guy's back, posted my arm with my four fingers and thumb on the ground for balance, and my thumb just gave in and bent completely sideways while making a nasty snap noise. I got a Judo tourney next Sunday and I got a bad feeling that this is really gonna hurt my game. As of now I can't grip at all. Anybody else had to deal with digit problems? Any tips for a quick recovery? I'm really feeling down right now. Anything would help.

You have to still train hard and work around it, that's why it's called Martial Arts; you have to work through the injuries and pain to achieve a higher ability. Take care of the thumb and work through it man, you have to develop that mind-set of adapting to pain; I had a hair-line fractured tibia and took the Washington State Championships in '98. I had to fight (6) opponents to get to the finals........ |

I have been able to put it a little bit more into perspective since writing that first post, which was pretty much right when I got home that day. Now I'm not so much thinking that I will lose because of my injury, but rather how I can win despite my injury. Injuries suck, but I totally get what you are saying. I'm doing martial arts and that's just how it goes. High risk, high reward. I guess if I was THAT concerned about getting hurt I would have chosen a different sport by now. Oh, and in what sport did you win states with a fractured tibia? And please don't tell me something like Chess |

I took the State Championship in Olympic-style Taekwondo (WTF). It was a fun sport, I had the great opportunity in learning orthodox TKD from a Korean ROK Marine; crazy bastard. But, a hell of a good man with a kind heart. |

I've been rolling for the last 6 weeks with a broken ring finger on my right hand. It's broken bad enough that it should probably be pinned and immobilized for 4-6 weeks, but I don't want to stop rolling that long so I've just been taping it and trying not to scream everytime I bend it backwards (which is about every 5 minutes it seems) |

I've been invited to train with the Carlson Gracie Team with Marcelo Alonso as the head instructor. I'm not big on grappling except for cross-training. I'd much rather bang-it-out under real-life scenarios but am considering this school to sharpen my ground game a bit, I have previous Jiu-Jitsu experience years ago.
....anybody hear of the school or the training? I wasn't too impressed with the classes I've seen. |

Just found the thread..total martial arts, mma, self defense freak.
I take private lessons (due to my crazy work schedule) from a brown belt Mark Sniff under Roli Delgado from Westside Mma and bjj in little rock arkansas. I dont have time to go to a gym, so i have the gym come to me. I did train with a few friends who are new like me from time to time I started off strong, but have been plagued with injuries from the start. The first lesson, during a sweep i rolled over Marks ankle with his weight on me and broke a rib.POP! it echoed in my warehouse.. After that healed, things were going good and was making progress for a few months, learning to breathe and flow and planning my moves etc and i had a really painful shoulder injury rolling with a asshat who didnt care i was new and wanted to prove something i guess. I have taken six months off so far but ready to start back! Brent |

In my conversations with Moni Aizik, a current Krav Maga instructor who has an extensive background in japanese arts like judo and jiu jitsu, his take was that Jiu jitsu was what a samurai did once he lost or broke his bladed weapon.
Judo was a sportized version of that. Being gun guys, I assume, the priority should be guns, bladed weapons, any other objects that can be used as weapons and then and only then martial arts that are counters to bladed weapons(example jiu jitsu). If you are without a weapon, you are either an animal or a human that has screwed up. Don't confuse sport with real martial arts. Real fighting begins and end with fighting with or against weapons. Otherwise, it is a sport. Most of MMA is sport. Real combat has no rules, more than one opponent assumed, and weapons on one side or the other. |

A guy walked toward me at the bar, grabbed my girlfriends ass and pushed me across the room, I went to grab my gun but I left it in the car, I went to grab my pocket knife but he was already in my face. So I arm dragged him and choked him unconscious before I finished my drink. Good thing I train BJJ

Do you feel/have you been told that your progress is faster/slower than those in a group setting? I currently train JKD and am actually an assistant instructor for JKD at my gym. However, I REALLY enjoy grappling and am wanting to take BJJ lessons. I, like you, have a tough schedule to make all that happen, so I am strongly considering private lessons. I was hoping to get your perspective. It is VERY costly, so I was hoping to get an opinion. This is where I will be going: www.focabjj.com (work and family safe link). |

Had my 1st private lesson this morning.
I think it went well. We covered a lot, so it was tough to remember the techniques as we grappled a bit. He obviously allowed himself to get into positions for me to work the techniques, but Im sure the more that I learn, the less of that I will see. Looking forward to learning much much more! |
|
|
you won't remember all the techniques , but practice doesn't make perfect....practice makes permanent....drilling forces you to remember but more importantly it forces your muscle memory...
