Shot thousands of rds through my first 92FS in USPSA matches. Never, ever once did I hit the safety, engaging it while racking the slide. Highly overrated concern, IMO.

Same here. Although I'm not a heavy hitter USPSA dude like you, I've shot gazillions through my 92 variants over almost 30 years (including countless S&W third gens and all kinds of other DA/SAs too) and have never, ever unintentionally swiped my safety to on safe.
But IMHO the current trend in all handgunning appears to be deletion of the safety or making it decock only. But God knows i LOVE freedom
, so more power to those that choose to not have a manual safety. I understand things and concepts and doctrine do change and evolve over the years. Said it before here - for me, personally, I'm so very thankful to God to have already acquired all the handguns I'll need for a lifetime, all with manual safeties, before the market winds began to blow in the other direction.
But buy, carry, and shoot whatcha like, cause IMHO our chances of successfully defending our lives, if heaven forbid we ever need to, will probably be greatest with a tool we feel most confident with.
