So I've been on low carbs since Sunday. Yesterday afternoon, I started having real bad body chills that was almost flu like.
I came home from work and I just went straight to bed. Also feeling nauseous, and I'm squirting like a goose too. Please tell me this will pass. No more body chills, but I'm sweating like a hog now though. ETA:

How low carb are you going? Around 50 a day, or less than 20 a day?
Every time I've ever went below 20 a day I get constipated. |
|
|
|
So basically eggs, cheese and pig.
Lol Why don't you diversify a bit with other animals like chicken, fish, and beef. Add some green vegetables, and nuts. Etc. |
|
Your body is use to using carbs as it's fuel. I assume you are on a high fat diet which is actually the bodies preferred fuel of choice. Being it's used to using carbs/sugar, the shaking and chills is probably hypoglycemic shock. Yes it will get better once your body switches to using fat as fuel, and it shouldn't take long. The body is smart.

Here are the Ketosis symptoms according to google:
Symptoms include: •breath that smells fruity or like nail polish or nail polish remover. •rapid breathing or shortness of breath. •excessive thirst. •frequent urination. •stomach pain. •nausea, vomiting. •fatigue, weakness. •confusion. It appears everything you are experiencing in the beginning is normal. Keep up the diet. What I searched. |
|
I felt pretty grody for about 5 days. After that - smooth sailing .
Drink lots of water and get lots of electrolytes. |
|
I'm Keto, and I do between 20-40g a day. Many people feel like crap for a few days when starting. I didn't, but many do. Lost about 60 lbs over the last few months. Seems great thus far.

No more than 20. View Quote It lasts different amounts of times for different people. Some as long as two weeks.. most will see the major symptoms pass in 5-8 days, and generally all symptoms are gone in by 14 days. You'll know as you'll begin to think more clearly, energy will shoot through the roof, etc. It's different for about everyone how long this will last. 1. Drink lots, and lots of water. 2. Even though you probably think otherwise... watch your fiber intake.... You'll go from squirting like a goose to "the Rock of Gibraltar" if you're not careful. Make sure you're taking a fiber supplement. Just stick w/ it.. |

You're going through ketosis. You're going to feel like shit for a little while.
Mix up the diet, different meats, nuts, and vegetables, and stop drinking the coke and the powerade. They are not helping. |

I am starting this type of diet on Monday. Good info, thanks.

Get some electrolytes in you. The keto/atkins flu has been linked to not enough electrolytes, which causes the funky feeling.
Drink a fuck ton of water, then drink some more (don't forget to increase your salt intake). Get some green veggies in you. Avocados, lettuce (not iceberg), spinach are your friend. |
|
Why would you do that? Carbs are the body's preferred source of energy and help keep muscle. If you are limiting calories keep it balanced. Hit your protein and fat goals and fill the rest with carbs. I'm down 25lbs in 2.5 months and I ate 300g of carbs yesterday.

I can only speak for Robb wolfs paleo.
The first two weeks are pure hell. After that it's fine. 4 years going strong ETA: and prob not enough veggies with goose squirt. |

If you're going heavy w/ the artificial sweeteners, you really need to break from those as well. I personally find artificial sweetener disgusting, so I don't drink anything that has them.. that pretty much limits me to unsweetened tea, coffee, and water. I'm fine w/ that. 2. Eating some green vegetables can help, but honestly at this point, you need to be careful doing that or you're going to prolong this. When you are very early, they can actually set you back and make you go through all this again. 3. Water, water, water, water, water, water, water. |

I hear the fizz tablets are pretty good though, but some can have a strong fake sugar taste in them. 3. Water, water, water, water, water, water, water. Cut out anything but coffee or unsweetened tea or more water though. Diet drinks aren't all that great for you, and actually caused me to plateau for a while. There have been studies done that show aspartame actually can modify the gut bacteria, and not in a good way - so watch intake of aspartame. I don't know about the effects of other fake sugars though. Best of luck OP. On the other side of the flu feeling, you'll have a lot more energy. My stamina is shit, but I found I was able to recover a lot faster, and keep going back for more longer. |

"The first reason being that carbohydrates are much more muscle sparing than fats during times of stress when glucose becomes a primary source of fuel (i.e. anaerobic exercise, injury, infection, etc). The muscle sparing effects of carbohydrates occur via several different mechanisms. When the body is in a low energy state, it may try to produce energy by converting amino acids to glucose. Carbohydrates prevent this since they can be easily broken down (and converted if need be) to glucose molecules. Carbohydrates then spare dietary protein from oxidation and these proteins can be stored rather than oxidized.Carbohydrates are also very muscle sparing during exercise. When one lifts heavy weights, the primary pathway that is used to produce ATP (cellular energy currency) is the anaerobic or glycolytic pathway (as the name implies this pathway operates in the absence of oxygen). The only substrate for this pathway is glucose, which can be obtained from dietary carbohydrates or by breaking down glycogen (the cell’s stored form of glucose)." Make a few cups of bone broth or bullion. You have decreased plasma volume, and that is making you feel sick. Water and salt. I would personally use Lite Salt, which is sodium chloride and potassium chloride.
June 15 will be one year on the KD for me. I have an occasional Cherry Coke Zero, and I drink a lot of decaf coffee. I use cream in the coffee, and whipped cream on top. Absolutely delicious. Here's a resource for you I just found out about - www.cronometer.com The web-based version is free, and the iPhone version is cheap. You can track all of your exercise and food items. The display is nice, and most foods are already listed for you. I was sick as a dog for two weeks after I started KD. But I had attended to the gf, who had a bad cold, right before. I think I caught what she had, so I have no way of knowing whether I had the K flu or the flu flu. |

They call that the Keto Flu (serious). I don't do ketogenic for cutting anymore, but I do PSMF which shares the zero carb aspect. The first couple days are always kinda cruddy. Assuming this is all it is, your diet is sound, and you don't have any underlying health complications; *it should go away after about day 3*.
