For the sake of this thread, let's all assume that God exists and The Bible is true. If an atheist leads a good and moral life, doing all the things that a good Christian does(other than accepting Christ), will they still go to Hell? Suppose someone just can't bring themselves to believe due to logic or ignorance. When they stand before God and say, "Sorry, I just didn't buy what The Bible was selling." Will God say, "Tough shit."?
|
|
Why do they care? They don't believe in heaven or hell or any of that.
What is GD's fascination with people who think differently than them? |
|
Lulz, "assume for the sake of this thread."
Anyone that answers this is most likely of christian faith and assumes anyways, and the atheists are just going to say Heaven and Hell don't exist, so why talk about it. |
|
|
I thought the only unforgivable sin was denial of the Holy Spirit? Wouldn't that mean you could just accept Christ at the last second and be good?
|
|
According to the Atheist handbook the answer is No
According to the bible the answer is Yes |
|
What if Allah is right and Christians are missing out on 17 virgins?

If you believe the bible is true, life is simple for you.
As an ancient government wanted it to be.

I'm an Agnostic and don't believe there is a literal Hell.
I believe the concept of Hell is an allegory of the suffering that people bring upon themselves in life as a result of self-destructive and antisocial behaviors. |

Based on my understanding of the Bible, and supposing for the sake of argument that the Bible is true - yeah, we're destined for hell no matter how super duper we are.
That's what the book says. I didn't write it, and am under no obligation to explain it. Not that I'm worried about it, mind you. |

If God did send me to Hell just because I wasn't willing to accept the Bible blindly and with no proof, I would take that as definitive proof that God does not, in fact, love me, so that proves the preachers wrong anyway.

Interesting question, and I will answer it with another question.......
What do you think happened to all of the Jews who passed on in the few thousand years before the appearance of Christ? And all the other people of all the other religions and beliefs who were born and died before Christianity was even a figment of the imagination? For that matter, where is Christ himself? He was born, and died, a Jew. He certainly didn't take himself to be the Savior in the same sense that your question asks. My .02: There is no literal Heaven, or Hell. They are constructs that we have created to explain the unexplainable. The only thing we know for sure, is that we don't know what comes next. |

"No one comes to the Father but through me" is pretty cut and dry. |

TL;DR version John 14:6 (ESV) Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.' Full Context John 14:5-14 5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?” 6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you really know me, you will know[b] my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.” 8 Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.” 9 Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. 11 Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves. 12 Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. 13 And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it. |

According to the Bible, there will be people who spend their lives preaching, doing good things, and even working, "miracles" who, when the time comes, will not make the cut. Apparently, these people know the Bible and think they're doing all these things for God so I guess that even some who believe they are Christians won't make it and, if that's the case, there isn't much chance at all for atheists.

I hope so , half the atheist I know are annoying assholes. But I also hope, half of the annoying Christians I know go to hell as well

View Quote This^ If there is a supreme being, I'm sure that his purposes are far beyond any superficial little religion cooked up by the mind of man. The hubris of people imagining that we are the center of the universe and that God sent his plan to a bunch of old men thousands of years ago and then shut up in modern times is breathtaking. Simply a creation by man to control the masses. If you believe that you are going to be rewarded with a perfect life in the future, you will be more tolerant of the misery inflicted on you in this one. Seems to be working for the Muslims. |

What's the point of that? There are billions of people on the planet who will never believe in, or possibly even hear of, the Christian God because of where they live. They're all going to burn because God's ad campaign wasn't pervasive enough? Nope. There's a couple quotes in the Bible that sorta talk about this. "If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin." from John. And you've got Paul saying: "When Gentiles who have not the law do by nature what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law. They show that what the law requires is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness and their conflicting thoughts accuse or perhaps excuse them on that day when, according to my gospel, God judges the secrets of men by Christ Jesus." Basically, God's law is natural and should be known to all anyway. So a person should know right from wrong even if they never got exposed to Christ. So the RCC says in the Catechism: This affirmation is not aimed at those who, through no fault of their own, do not know Christ and his Church: Those who, through no fault of their own, do not know the Gospel of Christ or his Church, but who nevertheless seek God with a sincere heart, and, moved by grace, try in their actions to do his will as they know it through the dictates of their conscience—those too may achieve eternal salvation. Note the word may. Not will or won't because, well, nobody in the Bible says directly what happens in this case. So you use some common sense and the readings to try to ferret out an idea. So you hope for God's mercy like with anything. Contrary to popular belief, even religion doesn't have all the concrete answers and sometimes you just have to go, "We don't know, but we hope." Of course, if you know Christ and his church and reject it, well, that's on you. |

If God is anywhere near as wise and shrewd as most organized religions hold, then given the choice in his draft picks between these two types:
1. Guy who lives a clean, moral and upright life, but never bothered to have the appropriate incantations and ceremonies done for him and never went to church. 2. Guy who checked the boxes by showing up and going through the rituals, but Monday-Saturday was a total turd (dishonest in business, cheated on wife routinely, etc.). ... I would have to hope he goes for #1. There are plenty of both types out there, by the way. |
