What do you guys think of this as a cosmetic/aesthetic thing?  Does it have a functional advantage?

Only way to get a high grip beavertail safety on the gun without bobbing a traditional hammer, so yeah it suits a real purpose. Look at MEUSOC pistols of the ‘80’s. They used an MGW hammer...

Kinda retro now because there are modified commander style hammers thanks to people like Bill Wilson.

My first 1911 many years ago was a Springfield Armory 1911A1.
I was getting hammer bite so I bobbed the hammer and installed a beaver tail safety.
After a few years I got tired of that bobbed hammer and re-built the whole pistol installing a Commander hammer, I have no problem with the way it looks or functions these days.

Before and after rebuild with the Commander hammer:

Yep. I kept mine stock for a few years. Got tired of finding the bite after every range session. I never noticed it while actually shooting, but after, it was ugly. It got changed.

I did it to mine.

My hand kept getting chewed up pretty bad with the stock hammer.

Same here. Stock hammer, bobbed hammer, and commander hammer without an extended beavertail all chewed me up.  I can only shoot them with the beavertail and commander hammer.  To answer the OP's question, for some of us, they are necessary and provide an advantage of not drawing blood.

The beavertail in OP's photo is an ugly piece of shit.  Colt should feel bad for using a non-fitted beavertail.  That is trailerhood quality.

Lots of love for 1911's.

This is one of my favorite builds, inspired by the MUESOC thread.

SA liberated from Israel and returned to America!

Colt rat-tails & Commander hammers.

Commander hammer, or bobbed hammer is just another way of accomplishing the same goal of eliminating some hammer bite.  As long as the pistol does't bite me, and goes bang when the hammer falls, I can live with either one.  Although the trend has been toward commander hammers for the past 30 years or more...

The commander hammer is just plain old school cool. I don't however like the hammers that most everyone has nowadays. It's been referred to as a commander hammer, and SA used to call them delta hammers, but I don't think of them as commander hammers.

LOL I've been firing M1911A1s for decades.  The weird thing is that I never got hammer bite from issue ones.  My current .45 is an RIA M1911A1 and I called it Vampirella because it drew blood every time I let off a mag until I dremelled the hell out of the hammer.  It works fine but I always see the WECSOG crappiness of the hammer.

I have been shooting 1911's most of my life. I tend to gravitate to guns with a spur hammer. Out of a half a dozen or so guns with the old style spur hammer. The only gun that ever bit me is my stainless Series 70 Government model. She hungers for both lead, and blood.

No commanders live here, but the ones with round hammers and rat tails are the ones that get carried, and with WW1 pattern thumb safeties too.

Do you need a specific model of Commander hammer for a standard M1911A1?  I noticed there are Type 70s & Type 80s advertised.
