I wonder if he stopped spinning or at least slowed down once they got moving.

Guessing there was some kind of aerodynamic influence going on from the more or less straight downwash and the increasing RPMs as he got closer.

To stop the spin you have to move the hoist cable in the opposite direction of rotation (much harder to do as the cable gets shorter). If you can’t stop it, transitioning into forward flight should slow then stop the spin. The trick is not to let it get that fast of a spin to begin with.

I don't know the specifics in this case but when I would hike I saw too many morons in flip flops and maybe a big gulp in the Arizona heat.
They recently had a rescue where the sign specifically noted to not wear flip flops, but hey that's for other people right?
