Shortly after 9-11-2001 I purchased a new 870 and vacuum sealed it and buried it in sealed pvc. I figured it was time to bring it out 19 years later. Pictorial

I put it in a Gun bag (so no sharp edges would puncture the wrapping) double sealed it in vacuum wrap with a desiccant. Put it in a pvc pipe and sealed it. After 20 years. Only the outer vacuum bag lost its seal. It might’ve been better to have placed the whole sealed gun in another sock to protect the outer layer. It was stainless steel functions properly... the only oddity is that apparently the butt pad got impregnated with fiber from the Gun sock.... perhaps from the compression of the vacuum?

Lessons learned:
1 do not use a fiber cloth.
2 protect outer vacuum seal with outer cloth to protect seal
3 Store with sealed ammunition.
4 vertical burial position is best
5 use VCI Paper
6 add knife
7 add desiccants and oxygen absorbers
8 Dry fire weapon so hammer spring is released.

Did the butt pad react with the silicone they put in the gun sock?

No, all he said was that it was shortly after 9/11. I want to know his specific mindset for burying this shotgun, and why he didn't dig it up for 19 years for that matter.

A lot of those gun socks are treated/impregnated with a silicone protectant that is supposed to prevent corrosion. I wonder if that seeped into/onto the rubber buttpad.

Fuck all that. My only question is why not wait till the 20 year mark?

I have seen lots of those buttpads rot so that isn’t surprising. Otherwise it looks like new. From the days when Remington made decent stuff too.

Oh that’s easy. To sell to a panic buyer.

You know the kind of markup he could get on that?

looks great, a little loving with emory cloth or fine sand paper should take the fuzz off the pad, if you really want to brighten it up that is.

OP was surprised since it's usually his socks getting impregnated, not the other way around.

I did! Got wife pissed at me :) My only advice is I should’ve outer wrapped it with something soft sell the outer seal didn’t get damaged and I should’ve included ammunition.
