My daughter wants to watch scary movies.  We tried a few Nightmare on Elm Street movies, but those "weren't that scary, dad."

Now we're watching The Haunting of Hill House.  She also claims it's not scary either, despite flinching and gasping if the dog walks in the room, if I take a sip of water, etc.

What do you recommend?

Nothing incredibly gory, wildly violent, or rapey (Saw, Hostel, Hills Have Eyes, I Spit On Your Grave).

The conjuring

Never been scared by any movies watched this on my own in the dark. Was really creeped out. Nothing gory or OTT no sex, gore or swearing that I recall.
One of the best horror movies made imo

Oh and the babadook

Another odd film, definitely creepy vibe.

The originals are Conjuring I and II.  Annabell and her sequels are fantastic spin-offs that are must see.  After you've watched all of those you should watch the prequel The Nun.

We have been watching all of the Warren films (Conjuring, Annabelle, etc.) this past week. As others have said, they are family friendly and not overly gorey.
Ed and Lorraine are just hokey enough to take the edge off of the movies and give comic relief. I've got a thing for Vera Farmiga, so that helps as well.

How old is daughter?

While not a traditional "scary movie," with monsters or demons, I like "Stir of Echoes," but it does have adult themes.

High Tension

Note that the above has adult themes, and some gore.  Good flick though and closer to terror than horror.

The Thing
28 Days Later
Texas Chainsaw Massacre (original, much more disturbing than the remake)
The Witch
Psycho (original)
The Shining
The Fly (1986)
Event Horizon
Night of the Living Dead
Halloween (OG version, made my wife feel anxious due to the pacing/stalking)

Below are "horror-lite" but still good.
Pandorum
Poltergeist
Hellraiser
The Cell

I'd consider it "horror-lite".  It's not that scary, but is a good flick and flips the genre on its head a bit.

The Conjuring scared the hell out of my wife when she saw it in theaters.  I didn't know how bad till several months after she saw it.   We were going through a haunted house attraction in Gatlinburg and at one quiet and dark area....I did the *clap clap* thing behind her. I still have a scar on my shin from where she kicked me for that one.
