You need to thread your buffer tube in more. Actually. Psa needs to thread that in more, send it back.

Lol, that tube needs another turn or two.  Btw how you didn't notice that when you shotgunned that thing open is the question?

Sometimes if it’s barely on the edge it will stay captured for a little while and then pop out.

OP, Thats shit QA/QC but you can easily fix it yourself.

There it is, quality control seems to be lacking at PSA.  I wish they would slow it down just a bit and get back to more consistent quality.

I still order from them, but I no longer take it for granted that what I get will be correct.  I immediately check whatever I get from them and not just put it aside for later assembly. The last time I did that, I got bit with 2 crappy lowers.

PSA made it right, finally, but it took some doing.

Send it to them so they can see and possibly implement corrective action as far as their assembly/qa policy is concerned.

I'm confident PSA should have "made it right" in the first place...

Are you using a standard length buffer or a longer pistol buffer? I can't quite tell from the photo.

If you're using a standard length buffer without a spacer, you can get excess rear travel, which means higher impact against the buffer retainer.

It does help if the retainer is fully captured by the buffer tube, too...

Unnecessary part that is detrimental to reliability. Just don’t use it. Without it there jamming it up the gun should run fine, just takes a bit more care field stripping.

IIRC, a standard length buffer is 3.75", and a pistol length buffer is 4".

You can also compare it to any standard carbine/H/H2 buffers you may have on hand.

It still shouldn't have been shipped.

Not everyone has the necessary tools or skill to remove the buffer tube.  Especially if it was torqued to the proper 40 ft/lbs and staked.

I would just rob the buffer retaining pin and spring from a spare parts kit, while waiting for the replacements from PSA to arrive.

You DO have spare parts kits, don't you?

I wouldn't send it back, but I would expect @PalmettoStateArmory to replace any parts that became unservicable.

That's reasonable.
ETA: I have one AR that's been running on the spring from a ball point pen for 10+ years because I launched the buffer retainer spring and couldn't find it

Shit happens.

Contact PSA let them know what happened. I would at a minimum request replacement parts. It's an easy DIY repair.

I have a couple hundred rounds through my PSA 9mm AR so far. Not a high round count, I know. But none the less, no issues. And from examining the build quality I don't expect any issues in the future.

My only complaint....no last round bolt hold open. Which I quickly remedied by swapping out the upper with one from Aero Precision.

I would 'adjust' the spring with a pair of needle nose pliers, screw the buffer tube in a little and continue shooting.   This is assuming you found the pin of course.

It means the guy that screws in the tube wasn't paying attention, the guy that stakes the castle nut wasn't paying attention, the QC guy wasn't paying attention, and the guy that presumably looks at the rifle before he test fires them wasn't paying attention. That makes the whole rifle suspect because who knows what else they didn't pay attention to.

Not a huge deal but they should send the OP a few boxes of 556 and a new spring for his troubles.

Everyone should have the know how to basically break an AR down and replace the components. Along with a good set of required tools to do so. Your life may very well depend on it one day.

In fairness, you shouldn’t have to inspect a brand new gun for basic issues.

But yeah, some companies outsource QC to the customer & you’ve got to do that.
