I've got a car that I need to sell, and I don't want to mess with Facebook/Craigslist buyers... I just want to accept an offer and have somebody pick it up.

I know there are a bunch of online services such as "CarBrain" that will do this (similar to Carvana, but for cars that don't actually run)... anybody have good/bad experiences with any of them?

You should at least say what the car is.

Go to a car show and ask around. Someone may want it for the sum of its parts.

Always can call a junk car service too.

But a blown up Porsche is worth more than a blown up Corolla.

Sooo, what is the car.

OP, what kind of car?  Also, most salvage/junk yards will pick up vehicles and pay scrap for them.  I used to get about $250-300 for stripped down Honda Civic rolling chassis

If you just want it gone, any junk yard in town will show up and get it from you as long as they legally can.  And they'll pay you a couple hundred bucks for the privilege.

If you want more than that, you get to post an ad and deal with the tire kickers and lowballers.

This is best option if OP doesn't want to list it and deal with people.

Keep in mind some parts are worth a fair amount, cat converter, alum wheels, any other alum parts like intake, block, heads.

Salvage yard. You won't get much.

Personally I'd use Craigslist - these days in Montana you get cash and a decent amount. Used vehicles in any condition are worth a shit ton here for whatever reason lately.

Insure the shit out of it, tow it to San Francisco, put a Trump 2024 bumper sticker on it with some assorted American flags and let nature take its course. You should have a check in a week.

Be careful with vehicle donations. It’s very common to get a big fat tow bill in the mail after donating to these organizations.

That is what I did.  It set there for a week with several tire kickers.  Eventually a guy knocked on the front door and handed me the cash and I gave him the keys and paper work.  Literally 5 minutes and the car was gone.

Lots of them will pick them up for free.

Similarly, some scrappers will pick it up and scrap it.

Typical mid sized car running or not is worth 5 to 800 at most bone yards in my AO.  A lot of them will haul it away, too.

What car? It might be worth jack shit, it might be worth $1500. My son has bought and done engine swaps on 2 different BMW E46’s now. First one had a bent valve and he ended up selling it back to the kid he bought it from. 2nd one is his daily beater.

Sons ex had a mint condition 2nd or 3rd gen Explorer that the transmission went out in.  The car looked like it rolled off the showroom floor yesterday.  This was about two years before the covid shit hit.

It was sold to Pull-A-Part for $350.  Today, you could have dropped $2500 into that transmission rebuild easily and still had a car worth more than the repair.

Haul it to scrapyard unless you want to deal with methheads that will buy it and then case your place for their next burglary.

And no tax deduction unless you itemize deductions, which have to be in excess of the standard deduction, currently $24K, IIRC, for a married couple filing jointly. And then, the deduction would only reduce your taxable income by the value of the car (which the IRS may question) leaving one with a net of 25-30% depending on one's tax rate.

So, if the car is worth $1000, the deduction would be worth, at a 25% tax rate, $$250. Far better to get cash in hand than go through all of that.

Just a side note, that ALL money raised by Kars 4 Kids goes strictly to Orthodox Jewish kids, and not just any needy children.  Also according to the article below only 38% of the money raised actually goes to the kids, with the remaining 62% for administrative costs to run the 'charity'.

Just got rid of my sons old Saab that's been an eyesore in the driveway for the past year.

Parts yard came and picked it up, gave us $500 for it.

Umm, that's a maybe. See my post a bit up the page. Additionally, I've read that the IRS is not pleased with people writing off "full value" of junkers because they know that most of those cars get scrapped. So, even if you can deduct the donation, it may be disallowed. After all, why should they allow you to take, i.e., a $1000 deduction on a car that gets scrapped for $250?

Bottom line: the organizations soliciting car donations are scammers and, like most scammers, they are appealing to the public's innate greed. Scammer scamming scammers, imagine that!
