I remember folks talking about what the protective lube was but I can’t remember.
Is a decent wipe down good enough or are we talking a thorough stripping?

It’s personal preference, but since Geissele is so high end I like to get it pretty clean, and then lubricate it with a high quality SYNTHETIC lubricant on the inside. I use a synthetic wax on the outside because when I was training in the heat (very hot where I live) after one day of training the castle nut and end plate (not Geissele) was totally covered in orange rust from my sweat, just from one day.
So once I got off the surface rust, I then used synthetic wax on all of the steel/iron parts to block it from any humidity/salt in my sweat. It worked like a charm. It still looks brand new since that first application. Just an idea that’s worked for me and my buddies too.
As for removing the packing grease stuff, I personally use 91%-93% rubbing alcohol with a microfiber towel (you can find them cheap in Walmart with the rubbing alcohol too). And totally removes everything bare, so it’s bone dry & clean ready to accept the high quality lubricant you use (I use Slip2000 EWL grease and oil too).
You can do what you want, but waxing the steel/iron parts of everything has been a game changer for me and haven’t had a single spec of rust in two years. I use something called “Renaissance Wax” however I’m sure a regular synthetic automotive wax would probably work just as well. Hope this helps.
